I don't want to derail this into a religious argument but most religions teach violence (ever read the bible?) and there is absolutely nothing innately worthwhile about religion. I've been keeping an eye on this thread all day. I was going to let the religion discussion go, because it wasn't escalating....but it seems to be heading in that direction now. Tone it down fellas, or i'll have to lock this down.
Truth. Plenty of Americans (and folks around the world) associate with Islam without really committing to principles of Islam-- just like most religions. I doubt Rex issued a Fatwa for him to "fight" instead of observing Ramadan. Anyone who claims Islam is a peaceful religion is uninformed, disengenous, or both-- that is not opinion, it is a fact-- so if you're of the opinion that his mother's quote was right on the $$, she's full of shit and doesn't even know what the tenets and hallmarks of her religion are. Uncomfortable fact- No widespread international religion has as many widely accepted "doctrine" works of literature that prescribe violence against non-believers. Uncomfortable fact-- Anyone who peddles "Jihad" as meaning inner struggle is disingenous or uninformed and has never bothered to explore its accepted use and context in Islamic literature-- both mainstream and otherwise. Weird puff piece filled with mistruths that isn't relevant to the NYJ and winning.
Beat me to it... I think we're all in agreement that none of us give a shit what religion he is as long as he plays up to expectations. That being said he is American and grew up in the shadows of the WTC so the day certainly has meaning to him and probably effects him in a way none of us can comprehend because he is a Muslim and none of us (as far as I know) would understand what it is like to be a Muslim in America.
Muhammad was a beautiful man indeed. That's why there are so many pictures laying around of him. I think we should apply the same rules to certain modern day religious leaders...

I did a quick search on Jihad and from the very first hit, I got this: Now I wouldn't say this is what happens. There are extremists that use the Quran out of context for their own good. The actual teachings of Islam is all in the Quran. Literature can be used to provoke people in to becoming extremists, but thats merely an opinion of those writers, not the teachings of the religion. Religion was invented to keep anarchy to a minimum. Without it there would be more indiscriminate killing, raping and plunder than there already is. If people didn't believe they actually have to face up to how they lived there lives in the afterlife then they wouldn't care how they lived them to begin with. It serves its purpose.
