sometimes the best thing an offense can do is punt... we didnt punt far too many times this past year.

Henne has shown enough to make clubs believe that he still has upside to become a potential long-term quarterbacking solution. The New York Jets are considered a strong contender to land Henne. They’re seeking a quarterback — at the right price — to push foundering starter Mark Sanchez. Henne also would be reunited in New York with new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, who, ironically enough, also was shown the door in South Florida when fired as head coach last December.

Ok I'm looking at the offensive line stats now. I see where we are getting mixed up. 13th is bad because it's the 13th WORST team in sacks, not best. That puts them below average. Sacks are way more important than hits because late hits are often not flagged and also they don't reflect the success of the play. The previous year they were 25th, significantly better. In other words they went from 28 sacks and 52 hits given up in 2010 to 40 sacks and 70 hits in 2011. That is significant regression and a huge part of the reason Sanchez was so banged up this year and struggled down the stretch. My point was that SANCHEZ got hit a lot, not that other teams got hit more who played multiple QBs. Do hits maybe include run stuffs for losses? At least half the sacks on Sanchez this year were practically right off the snap because of poor play on the line.

    For example:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLpimht0tUM

Yes, he regressed... while INJURED for 3 games. For the entire season he did not regress despite the terrible end of the season.

Well I was responding to the guy who clearly stated that Sanchez regressed. My argument to that is that in most important categories he did not actually regress. I acknowledged TOs in my first post in that thread. He did regress in that category, but overall for the year he did not. I am not cherry picking stats. I included the most important ones. Did I leave any others out that really matter? You mentioned YPA which has more to do with the play designs, and TOs I already mentioned. What else is there?

Then we're back to square one and can go back to the top and read my response about the offensive line causing a lot of Sanchez's issues. I re watched a good amount of the games this year focusing on oline play, and there's really not much more I can say. I say Sanchez IMPROVED despite being sacked so many times and being hurt for a good amount of games. He improved in MOST categories that matter. So if you're on the fence, you have to lean to the improvement side. Simple math. I've heard Sanchez audible out of plays a number of times to read the defense, but the majority of issues that I saw were when the line blew 1 on 1 matchups badly and didn't have anything to do with reads. All you have to do is watch the Broncos debacle. Hunter got flat out owned in that game, and got Sanchez injured. It seemed like blown coverage but it usually was not.

I didn't say it was bad to try to improve Greene's passing game or get him involved from time to time. I said that he didn't play the running backs to their strengths and it happened all season long. Getting LT injured in garbage time is despicable. There was no need to even put him in at that point, nonetheless for a run up the middle. There were way too many LT runs up the middle and Greene screen passes. I don't mind it every now and then but for Schotty it's always opposite day.

I said running game, not passing game. Sure, they "tried" but not nearly enough. We excelled when our running game and passing game were balanced or close to it. Again look at the stats for the offensive line. 443 rushing attempts in 2011 (547 passes), 534 in 2010 (525 passes). Yes that is strictly on Schotty and we both know which team won more games.

I disagree. O line, receiving, QB, OC. The blame is distributed evenly amongst them. It is certain not mostly on Sanchez, as I demonstrated above.

What about the one that Tom Brady threw right to David Harris?

    what about it?

I think Brady can live with a few bonehead INTs every now and then. Sanchez cannot.

The Jets have also been linked to Peyton, the number 2 pick, and Braylon... Everyone is going to say this is an obvious spot, but there's no actually reporting saying from source or what not.

Also, not exactly sure if all 5 million would count against the cap, but even half of it counting seems like a waste. Just bring Orton in for much cheaper.

I just find that move extremely odd.

Backing up a young struggling QB with a young struggling QB.

And there is not really a clear difference between them, so it will be bring in henne after every bonehead INT by sanchez.

Either go for Peyton and make Sanchez redo his deal and sit and learn, to then come back stronger Or take in a real no2 (ie experienced) such as Orton. If he happens to win the 1st spot then so be it.

This isn't Tony's show, Rex made 2 title games w/ Sanchez, Tony never competed for a postseason w/ henne. IF Henne comes here he'd be coming as a bakcup.

I've been thinking about the Henne to New York idea, and I think it's a bad one for pretty much 1 reason...I think Henne would beat Sanchez out.

Lets say they bring Henne in for some competition. I think Henne would outplay Sanchez during training camp. He might not, but I'm just throwing this out there as a possibility. Even if Henne does play better than Sanchez during training camp and preseason, there's no way the front office would give Henne the starting spot. The other players would see Sanchez being outplayed, and they would see the front office playing favorites with Sanchez. I don't think other players would appreciate this, and would be happy that Sanchez is getting another free ride. I dont think it would take long for there to be more locker room issues, more players jumping off the Sanchez boat, and some bad blood. Not only will the players lose respect for Sanchez, but they'll lose respect for the coaching staff.

Also, with bringing in a quarterback that is right around an equal to Sanchez, fans know what he can do, and 1 or 2 bad games and people are going to be calling for Henne. It may sound stupid but I think you want to bring in somebody that is less talented as Sanchez that way fans wont be clammoring for him to play right away, and Sanchez can outplay him in training camp to get his confidence up, and the players will see that he earned his job this time and hopefully respect him more for it.

i totally agree with you, or you bring in somebody that Sanchez is not meant to beat, such as PM (not that i think that is doable) as that wouldn't create as much problems.

I think sanchez 15mill is his biggest problem, he is massively overpaid and that hurt his locker room relationships. He would benefit from renegotiating (not that i would do it but still)

Henne is less talented than sanchez and the Jets have seen Henne up close enough and watched enough film to understand Sanchez is the better QB by a wide margin.

Your point about hits I think is entirely unpersuasive. It's not like only the Jets' stats did not include stuffs for losses. The stats are an objective measure of how often the Qb was hit. Sanchez's line was above average in that regard, all the way down to 22nd in the league. The much higher and worse rating for sacks was because he held on to the ball too damn long, and still doesn't seem to know when and how to get rid of it. I see that as a function of his inability to read pass defenses.

And saying the stat on sacks, which clearly involves the decisionmaking of the Qb, is more important than hits is, without question, cherry picking in support of your pro-Sanchez argument.

You are right I meant running game, not passing game, but it is simply incorrect that the Jets did not try to establish the running game. The running game was too unsuccessful for reasons anyone watching the game could see - opponents stacked the box to stop the run because they did not fear Sanchez's arm. You see that enough and you have to try and put them on their heels with pass attempts. The only problem is Sanchez is still not effective enough to force opponents to fear the passing game.

Most teams in today's league pass more than run. Some much more, and again, until the Jets can show their passing attack should be feared, the run will be less effective.

Lower performance by the OL from one of the top OL's in the league to still an above average one should not be an excuse for a Qb to be below average himself, which is what Sanchez is.

I appreciate the politics of the way the Jets are run and who is in charge, whose cred is involved in trading up to get Sanchez, even that he was not Ryan Leaf awful, all mean he is very likely to be back this coming season. I have accepted that reality. I just don't have much hope for significant improvement from Sanchez, and think that this time next year, he is more likely to be on the way out than coming off a strong season, with the Jets having arguably wasted another year with him.

And I sure as hell don't think a new OC is going to bringthe Jets to the land of milk and honey. Changing out Burress for Edwards, Hunter as starting RT for someone, anyone, better, Mangold staying healthy all year and hopefully a bounce back by Ferguson, more solid play by Greene, will help. But no change of playcalling is going to change the fundamental dynamic that Mark Sanchez is just not a good Qb.

Imo if the Jets had Kyle Orton at Qb, they would certainly have made the playoffs last year, despite all the other problems. He's always been a top fifteen, near top ten, Qb, is mid career and back from injury, playing well in his last few games last season. He shouldn't cost much, and would not require cannibalizing the team elsewhere to pay him.

It strikes me as so clearly the right approach, that I am sure the Jets will not do it. They are too personally invested in Sanchez.
