I actually had Nate Byham in that spot, but I feel like he'll be off the board around the fifth round. He's got a lot of upside. ...it's a shame we had to trade our fifth round pick for a big time, proven receiver, isn't it? I think Brown is a great fit in our system and he'd be a nice compliment to Greene.
I've definitely looked at it this way too. The Browns may want to trade into the first to get Colt McCoy. We may be able to ship Bryan Thomas and our first to the Browns for their second and a few other picks.
By the way, I'm also on board with the "not drafting an FS" thing if it means we get our pass-rusher, our d-line depth, and we also get an improved nickel CB. If we could somehow trade down for an extra 4th, still get Joseph, and add Myron Rolle to this mock, I would jump for joy. And that would set us up perfectly to grab a DE from the super-deep class next year (hopefully Joseph is ready to move inside full-time for 2011), add an OL to replace the other of Faneca/Woody that Tennant doesn't, and maybe grab a slot WR in the 4th round to pick up the slack when we lose one of Holmes/Edwards. That leaves us 3 extra picks I wouldn't even know what to do with. Oy wow.
To any team out there: Panic at your lack of QB depth and trade your 5th for Clemens. Or Leon, I really don't give a fuck at this point.
I think this a great point and something that is going largely overlooked. As an aside, I follow the baseball draft much like you follow the NFL draft, and when they made a similar switch in format last year, throwing an overnight break in between the end of the 3rd and start of the 4th round, the 4th round went haywire. That's in a draft with no trading, too. I can only imagine what's going to happen to the 2nd and 4th rounds in a system where trading is a prominent event. I bet we see all sorts of moves and less guys slipping. I'd even wager that we see teams overpaying in those overnight deals as they get enamored with players during the break and panic that other teams are stalking the same guys.
I have nothing wrong with taking Joseph at 29. Tennant is an interesting choice for them, but I like it. He's versatile and comes from a great program. He could be a very solid guard someday. I've never been too high on Greg Hardy, but if any squad can get the most out of a linebacker, it's this defensive staff.. I'd be okay with the last two choice, but I'd prefer a more natural safety or corner than Warren. He seems like a tweener that might have trouble finding a spot. Overall, solid though. Matt Tennant in the 2nd highlights this mock
You know how I feel about Linval Joseph in Rd 1. I really love Linval's measurables and ability. I know this doesn't pertain to you E...I'm just wondering how many on this site have seen East Carolina and Joseph play????, IMO, not many. I wouldn't make a judgement on a player, especially Rd 1, on a player I've never seen. Matt Tennant is an interesting selection in late rd 2. Tennant is pretty athletic with excellent feet and quickness. I like the idea of versatility in an O-lineman, especially since we have a limited amount of picks. I don't think he would be a long term solution at RT, but excellent OG/C depth and could replace Faneca. Greg Hardy and Donovan Warren...undervalued players for reasons listed that could develop into very solid players.
I do know how you feel about Joseph. I saw him play multiple times - we get a lot of ECU games on ESPN2 here in Columbia. You don't usually see mid-major players leave early unless they have great seasons. He had a great year. Joseph made a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage and he's a damn good run defender. That's what Ryan's looking for...versatile big men that can blow up run plays and take on blockers. I think Tennant is the perfect prospect to fill Faneca's spot when he decides to hang 'em up. He's a nasty lineman with good athleticism that has the ability to be a damn good pull guard.
Like I said, I knew little about Joseph before some of the draftniks started discussing him. I've seen maybe 2 ECU games in the past 2 seasons. However, I've since gone back and watched him, and I like what I see. I hope that's enough to legitimize my opinion.
I only like Joseph in a trade down. If Odrick isn't there its looking more and more like we'll take a DB. I like the Tennant pick, creative and smart choice. No way Warren is still there by our 6th rounder.
I wasn't questioning you, I know you've seen LJ numerous times. My point was in general to the board that they're bandwagon folks that make snap decisions about players without ever seeing them play a down. I really like LJ, I just can't sanction a Rd 1 pick.
I saw ECU play 3 times this year in person and I'm still no expert on him. I can say he's a damn good player in my eyes. But, again.....not an expert.
Not a comment. Just a question. Faneca...Tennant....(or any OL prospect..) the one thing that needs to show up on tape, is the 300 lb guy making blocks 30 yards downfield (one thing Faneca still does consistently). Is this pick, that type of prospect?
