love the Paea pick. As Mr. E said, the guy was a consensus top 15 selection and then a random freak accident causes him to slide some. There is a reason the guy was a consensus top 15 pick, and if he is there at 30 he probably should be the pick. The same of course can be said if we are somehow staring at top 15 prospect at 30, he will likely be BPA, and should be our pick.
Correct. I like Brooks Reed, but we're not getting him unless we get back into the second round. Dontay Moch will be over drafted, so we're probably not getting him either. I've kept some prospects to myself - I guess you can call them my sleepers. There's quite a few players that deserve more recognition than they're getting.
so then would it be fair to say this be your "deserves more recognition" jets mock? By that I mean, you aren't likely to suggest any of the mainstream guys that have been talked about significantly lately?
Not necessarily. I'm definitely trying to put a different spin on things with this mock, but a few of my picks will be guys that have been discussed frequently on TGG. I opted not to choose a pass rusher in the first round, because I see potential in the later rounds. There's some prospects with great upside that will be available after the third round. I would love to see the Jets bring in a big-time blitzer off the edge, but at 30, I just don't see how we're going to end up with one of those guys. I know a lot of fans want a Clay Matthews/Terrell Suggs-like player, but it may not be realistic, especially now that we're without a second rounder.
Interesting pick. A meniscus tear is serious, but many football players have come back from this injury. Some meniscus tears only require arthroscopic surgery, I don't know the details of Paea's surgery. Paea was a top 15 pick in rd 1 and could have moved into the top 10. I believe we could move Paea around in multiple fronts on the line. We all sometimes get caught up in ..."he can't play in a 4-3 or 3-4". On another site I was debating with a couple of guys that Wilson could fit in our scheme. They were very myopic and said he was only a MLB and it would be a wasted pick. They failed to realize Wilson's athletic ability and he use to play OLB before his neck injury.
It was definitely an unfortunate injury, but I don't see it as a "serious" one. A lot of athletes have played through the same injury. I read that Paea's injury wasn't too bad and could've been a lot worse. It's supposedly just going to keep him out 7 to 8 weeks. I'm pretty sure Martez Wilson was the #2 overall defensive end recruit coming out of high school. I think the only player ahead of him was Carlos Dunlap. Wilson's incredibly versatile - he's got experience at DE, OLB, and ILB.
Wilson was highly recruited in the mid-west. The Buckeyes wanted him badly and Tressel was very disapponed when he stayed home and went to Illinois. My Uncle lives in Chicago (Naperville) and I remember him telling me Martez Wilson was the talk of Chicago when he was being recruited.
I like the pick, never really thought of Paea as a choice(I guess that's the point of the thread though). Having seen the argument from both HS-to-College and College-to-NFL, height and weight are overrated when it comes to NGs. Strength and leverage means means so much more than him having an extra inch or another 10 pounds. Yeah, yeah, the position is synonymous with 6-4, 350 pound giants, but by no means is that the definitive standard...
I think I'd prefer Paea at DE instead of NT. Paea and Pitoitua at DE with Pouha at nose would make for an all Samoan front 3.
^ I think Acho can probably be ruled out, because I just think he is starting to grow on everybody, not just you. I think he is probably rising up the boards now I think with another strong pro-day he could be a second round guy which of course is well out of our reach.
If I put out a mock a few weeks ago, he'd be my third round selection. I think he'll be a second rounder after a strong combine. My third round selection will be up between 12:00 and 12:30.
That probably not wouldn't work out well. Paea could fit well as a nose tackle because he gets awesome leverage. His height would definitely work against him as an end. Pouha can play end. I'm hoping Pitoitua can bounce back from that injury, but the odds are against him.
Well E. if the jets were to draft Paea (or another 3-4 DL player) would that signal Ellis is done in NY? The assumption with Paea being it shuffles Pouha outside to end for the most part, and that we keep all of our young guys the FO is high on, and let the vets Pryce and Ellis walk. If we were to draft a 3-4 DE high, the assumption would be Pouha stays inside, and devito and the young guy would start, and ellis would be allowed to leave this way. If we draft DL mid-rounds or later, I think ellis is kept to continue to tutor the young guys.
I'm really out of the college loop at the moment, so am busy cramming. All the articles I've found on him are mostly full of praise. I know alot of people want a OLB/DE pass rusher as a first pick, but if that kind of impact player isn't available, then I would like this pick, IF his injury isn't a factor.
