if u got rid of every player that sucked there rookie year. there would be a ALOT of cutting going on.
It is pretty clear that this play took place on the sideline and Gholston was pushing him out of bounds. That much we know, what we don't know more importantly though is what kind of player Gholston will end up becoming. The people saying he is already a bust are just as crazy as those that are counting on him to flourish under Ryan. We just don't know, it didn't look good after year one but he wouldn't be the first player to urn it around after a horrible rookie year. Lets hope because he could be the difference between a good and great D next year.
You do know there's a difference between giving a player a chance to make plays for us, and pulling a player because whenever he was given the chance, he just didn't perform well, right? I don't doubt Mangini played some role in Gholston's poor performance last year. But whenever he was on the field, he looked slow, tackled poorly, and couldn't even bull-rush tackles (which was considered his bread and butter in college). So, while I partially agree, I think you'd be foolish to think that Gholston isn't accountable at all for his horrible play.
You would see the goalpost for the very same reason that you can not see the numbers - there is barely any angle to the photo. If the play occured at mid field, the angle would not be sharp enough to cut out 100% of the goal post. If you're referring to my picture, I didn't photoshop anything. See it for yourself here: http://www.stadiumsofnfl.com/afc/images/giants08901main.jpg I wasn't singling you out. Just scroll through a few of the Gholston threads on this site and it won't take long to see that there are more than a few "fans" who seriously want to see this guy fail. There is a difference between what you think will happen and what you want to happen and unfortunately many people around here seem to confuse the two. The same is true for the Clemens/Ratliff argument. Do I think either of those two are the answer to our quarterback issue? Hell no I don't. But, as a Jets fan, nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong and it seems like the majority of the Gholston crowd lack that same attitude
Re-read all my posts. It never crossed my mind that we should part ways with Gholston so I don't know why you think I'd wanna get rid of him.
If anything I'm probably making light of the situation cause I'm sitting here joking around about it. Bottom line is, his success is very important to us. If he does well, we don't have to worry about the pass rush for another 3+ years and would free us up to get better players in the first round during that tenure. If he fails and matches the same kinda numbers he had this year, we could be looking as early as next year's first round to find his replacement which would impact our cap situation. For Gholston failure is not an option at this point. Hope he gets it done.
So as long as he shows some improvement. At this point, if he happens to trip on the QB by mistake I'll still take that as improvement. I don't care. That's how low my expectations are for him next year so he can only wow me from there on out.
These were my expectations I posted a couple of months ago: Sacks - 6+ Tackles - 35+ Passes blocked - 5+ Forced fumbles - 2+ Fumble recoveries - 1+ I think they are reasonable
My initial reaction to your post was, "*wince*...i don't know man." I'm not really that high on him for sacks (even tho that's what he's supposed to do). Maybe top off at 6. I can see the tackles being fulfilled. I'm highly doubting he blocks that many passes. More so than him getting 7+ sacks next season. The guy really struggled playing zone a lot. Forced fumbles...in a 16 game span, he could very well get that, but I'm also having my doubts about that simply because he just doesn't hit hard. Recoveries is very do-able and maybe a few more. I mean, I'm basing this off of last season. I don't expect the guy to do a complete 180, but I'm also sure he'll be a different animal under Rex's supervision. Still, these stats would be much needed signs of improvement so I'll go with them as well.
The biggest problem I had last season with Gholston was that he just COULDN'T read the game at all. I don't care if hes the greatest athlete , without brains , its all moot. As far as I'm concerned all his learning isn't in the f'n gymnasium , its in the classroom and practice field to stop shit like this....
To his defense in this particular play...he WAS going to push the guy out of bounds, but the problem was the sidelines was about 30 feet away.
I really don't believe anyone here wants him to fail as another poster indicated. I hope he is the next Lawrence Taylor, minus the blow.
I wish I had video from the Broncos game last season- one play Cutler had rolled out to his right and the Ghost got into the backfield and started chasing Cutler. The problem was that Gholston looked like he was running in quicksand after Cutler. I swore I pressed slow-mo on my remote.
