what an awful post. Bart Scott has earned his keep on this team...as a leader and a football player. The guy does the dirty work (taking on blocks to open lanes up for the Hitman)....try watching the games.
Funny, not long ago Leonhard was mentioned here as our most under rated. I can't see how in any way he could be over rated. He is what he is. I want him out there in a big game. He proved that in the 2010 playoffs. I'll along with the Bart Scott choice. I've expected more from him, and am glad I resisted buying the Bart Scott Jersey when he signed here. I have not been very impressed. He is great for quotes and TV features though.
How is Bart Scott getting dragged through the mud here? He has a specific role in that defense and performs his role at a high level. His contributions are reflected in how well David Harris and the rest of the LBs/Safeties/DrewColeman get to the point of attack. Oh wait, he doesn't have 15 sacks....I guess Bart sucks.
Jim Leonhard, over achiever aka white football player. Jim overrated as in his play, but his presence on the field to get people in order is underrated. Where would you rank Cromartie among active CB's today(not including entire career) ? Number wise.
I'll have to remember in future discussions of this sort, if an opinion comes from this quarter, that anyone who said Cromartie to this question doesn't know much about football. I would like to see more from Keller, and can see why someone would mention him, but I have trouble determining whether those games where he seems to produce very little are because of matchups, game plans or Sanchez not getting him the ball. I would say Pool, not because anyone rates him highly, but because he struck me as the starter I would most prefer to see an upgrade replacing him. But I suppose the same could be said about Thomas and some others.
I don't know, I haven't given it thought I just know he was not waht I expected when we got him. he had some good moments and ended on a high note the last 2 playoff games but w/ his ability he should be a top 5 corner and I don't think he's anywhere near a top 5 corner or even a top 10 corner.
I wish Cromartie wouldn't play so far off the LOS....that's one of his glaring weaknesses, imo. He got burned too frequently by guys like Welker because of that. When he's playing bump n' run....he's much more effective in his coverage.
Bart Scott's job is to blast the lead blocker for other LB or safety to wrap up. He doesn't get a lot of tackles but he does his role well. And if people listen to, and are pumped up by his emotionality then it is good for the team. A positive impact doesn't have to be a great player, think Rudy. Nobody really fawns over Keller. I like him because Sanchez had confidence in him more than others at some spots in the year. So simply for that he deserves recognition. Plus he lead the team in catches. Holmes would have had 64-65 with those 4 games i know but he didn't.
I would totally take McCourty over Cromartie heading into this season, if that were the choice, mostly because of youth and consistency. Cromartie scares the hell out of me. It's hard to compare the two, since McCourty is the #1 CB usually guarding teams' best guys, while Cromartie usually guarded teams' #2 guys. They're both good CBs. You could make a case for either one. I wouldn't say he's overrated per se, but Santonio wasn't as good during the regular season as most remember. He dropped way too many passes. Sanchez is overrated by some Jets fans, and underrated by a good chunk of the general public.
A lot of the players named I wouldn't say are overrated. I'd say the fans are just poorly educated with the roles and effectiveness of players. Leonard, Cromartie, Smith, and Greene have specific roles to fill and all are effective at their jobs. Pace is a good choice, though. He performs well across the board, but is not excellent anywhere either. Now, Damien Woody is clearly overrated. Wayne Hunter took a game to get in gear, but played just as well as Woody after that. There is a lot of talk about how we NEED to bring back Woody, because of the shortened offseason. We don't need overpay Woody, because Hunter is just as valuable at a cheaper price.
Wayne Hunter did a decent job in place of Woody but he wasn't anywhere near as good as Woody. I'm hopefuly we re-sign Woody b/c I'm not sure Ducasse is ready.
Sanchez is underrated. You will see this season. For overrated, I guess it would have to be Cromartie, but I think most fans know how good each player is.
Definitely disagree with that. Once Hunter was up to pace he was fantastic. Allowed ZERO sacks in the postseason. Early on his penalties and sacks allowed did kill us but come playoff time he was great.
There's more to it than sacks allowed. For me it is very difficult to evaluate OL and I hate the new OL stats b/c just b/c a guy didn't allow a sack doesn't mean he was good. Did he committ penalties? did he allow pressure? how was he in the run game? I thought he did a good job considering what he was asked to do and i'd love him as a backup but I wouldn't feel great about him starting 16 games.
Very true, I thought Woody was looking a bit weak anyway, Hunter coming in almost provided a spark. IMO he improved our running game when he came in too, a lot less mileage on him.
