Its like we need a helping hand in order to compete with the big boys. Man up, learn from your mistakes and move on.
I hope once the logic of your post sinks in the crying about the CORRECT call by the refs can cease and we can talk about more substantive issues.
Why was MM standing 15yds from Rex in the first place? This two headed monster will bite us in the ass again before the season is over. You the HC and the OC should be closer when the offense has the ball?
Seriously, these guys have been suggesting that because the rule says "Only the HC can call the timeout" that means that since is WASN'T the HC, the REFS screwed up and should some how pay recompense to the Jets for listening to a JET player making an unauthorized TO call. That the refs should have discussed it and realized NOT that the Jets made a mistake but that the REFS made a mistake for listening to a player scream TIME OUT in his ear as the ball was snapped. That maybe they should have just disregarded the whistle, award the Jets the touchdown and declare them immediately the winner. Seriously, the other night Falco suggested that maybe the day after we could appeal to the league (like a baseball protest) and oh... I don't know...maybe fly up to GB on Tuesday and complete the game from a tied score? It's very weird posting on this site after a loss if you aren't totally bombed. That was a first for me and it was bizarre. _
Honestly, after completely processing everything we've heard over the past 2 days, this is the only thing I have issue with. Having said that, had they been standing together Rex would have called the TO immediately. Btw, I give Rex a complete pass on being on the defensive channel on the headset. He and MM had discussed the play and once they were in agreement, Rex needed to disaster plan in case we didn't make the first down. _
especially if Rex is going to be on the defensive channel of the headset so Marty can't contact him. It made no sense whatsoever.
I was annoyed about this as well until I thought about it for a while. Marty may get distracted by what he thinks is the alignment from his point of view, but really from the sideline you can't see the defensive alignments well at all. This is why from NFL down to high school football they have vantage points high up that you can see the entire field and not just the backs of the O-linemen. Marty could have been next to Rex with his back turned to the field, I guess, while he communicated with his man up in the booth, but maybe he likes to be away from the action. The only reason he started running down the sideline in the first place was that Rex wasn't on the right channel on his headset. Rex is completely avoiding blame on this and I just lost some respect for him because of it.
It's 4th down in the 4th quarter and the Jets are down by 7. Rex should have been on the fucking offensive channel. He said on Sunday night that he didn't call the timeout and he didn't know why Marty was running down the sideline because they usually do timeouts over the headset. Now we find out that he wasn't even on the O channel. Rex is throwing Marty under the bus for this, and it's fucking sad. Rex deserves some of the blame.
The whistles can be blown after the snap occurs and the play is dead, but a player still running off the field after the snap occurs results in a free play and a penalty. Thank God for consistency.
To play devil's advocate it's 4th down he's prob looking for a way to get the ball back. We still had time left on the clock.
I don't post here after games until the next morning. By then I've slept on it, probably seen the Post Game Show, read some about it. I see some of the posts from the night before, right after the game. After a loss it somewhat makes up for the Jets having lost to see the amusement factor in some of the posts. When it gets to be too many of hte posts it can become... disturbing. Which is not amusing. But at least I've slept on it and am not high or anything. I almost never post here when I am intoxicated, ftr. Even if it often seems like I am. Anyway, back to this kicking a dead horse subject, yes, the logic of the complaints as you point out is lost on me. What we seem to have here is a situation where someone on the Jets team called a time out, and the ref blew the whistle. Even if that happened after the ball was snapped, the play was blown dead. What level of authorization that person had does not mean the play perhaps should have proceeded after the whistle was blown. I understand that some were trying to hang their hats on the rule saying that in such situations, involving the team members on the sidelines, only the HC is supposed to have the authority to call for a timeout. But how was it supposed to work to the team's advantage if it was the Jets that broke that rule? Don't get that one at all. It was perfectly understandable why the official blew the whistle, and once it was blown, that was that. This issue is dead to me.
This post makes no sense. A timeout can be called with a split second left on the play clock. Do you really think a ref can get his hand to his whistle, put his whistle in his mouth, and blow the play dead in a split second? If a 12th player is on the field when the ball is snapped, that is a real penalty, there's nothing you can really justify it being any other way. Get real.
Yes, this is the only issue of significance going forward, but even it is not all that significant. I think if you asked Rex he would say Marty should have the authority in such circumstances to call for the timeout. Rex himself is not going to want to debate such a decision. He knows Marty knows far more about the O than Rex does. So other than making sure the officials see that it is the HC calling for the time out, nothing really would be accomplished by having Marty stand next to Rex and then have Rex automatically relay Marty's call for a time out. I don't know the specifics, but I always thought the OC stands apart from the DC (meaning Rex - heh) because the players on O tend to congregate around the OC and the players on D around the DC. They can't all be standing in the same place.
Westoff was just on ESPN with Rothenburg and said Rex being on the defensive channel was nothing out of the ordinary. He also said that Rex definitely didnt do anything wrong, he blamed the official. He actually had some great insight, and I recommend listening. As long as the interview isnt about the CB's or Stephen Hill, he's fun to listen to.
Westhoff said on Sunday night that he called timeouts from the sideline with the Jets. In his mind a coordinator should be able to call them. Sounds more like he has a beef with the zebras than anything else.
Worse comes to worse you have to think of a way to get the ball back - I don't think this is uncommon at all. Rex gave Marty the keys to the offense, he should be held accountable in that regard - Marty wasn't wrong in regards to the T.O. but, in my opinion, Marty needs to put more trust in Geno to make the right decisions on the field, the moment he saw Geno getting everyone lined up (including Powell) is the min Marty should have said NO timeouts. Can't panic in that circumstance and I think the CS did. I understand where you are coming from and to me as a HC - If I am Rex, I am standing right next to Marty, while having the defensive channel on my headphones to get ready for the play-call if things didn't work out.
