this is like getting arrested for drunk driving and then pointing out a typo on your ticket to try and get out of it. Mack said it perfectly "By the letter of the law they screwed up, but by the spirit of the law, people should really stop complaining." The Jets were trying to call a timeout. Hell had Rex heard MM, the HC probably does call the timeout.
It's loud as hell in there. Nobody can hear anything. The ref has to watch the field. If he turned around to try to figure out who was calling time out, he might either call the time out too late, he might miss part of the play, or any number of things can happen
what they can do in the future is use technology to prevent this from happening. give the coaches a buzzer that vibrates something the ref is wearing signaling them to call timeout.
I posted these earlier. Lol. Of course I don't expect the ref to turn around in that situation. The place was loud so I give the ref the benefit of the doubt that maybe he thought Rex called it. Rex then tells the ref that he didn't call the timeout. The refs could've quickly came together and spoke about it. Hell they could've got the word from NY.
Sure, because there's no conflict of interest in Rex wanting that play to stand... Maybe he's a great actor and called time out verbally and we just can't see it.
Yes it kind of did. The Packers might complain that the timeout was called and they can't overturn it. The fans there might lose it (which sometimes may sway the refs) by overturning the timeout it ties the game. So to play it safe they stick with the timeout.
Watch the tape. He was standing there. After the ball was snapped he finally notices Marty jumping up and down and walks over to him. Rex celebrates the TD then the ref waves it off Rex walks over to speak to the ref.
That is actually an interesting idea. I hadnt thought about that. To go along with that I would suggest doing something different with the whistles. I have often wondered why with all the modern technology they still use whistles on the field, despite it being a loud environment. Seems like something better could be used that would make it more clear to everyone the play is dead. Had that been the case that "non-play" would've never occurred.
Yea great idea, strap electrodes to the refs ballsack and butthole that electrocute him when the HC presses the timeout button
Terrible idea! Hocules would use them to get more muscle definition while ref'ing the games, then retire & sell us the contraption at 230am for 29.99, if we call right now!
Nah this is like the cop NOT arresting a guy despite the guy blatantly being hungover and decided to drive because he was parked on the curb. There is no such thing as a "spirit of the law". The rule states only the head coach can call a timeout on the sidelines. It doesn't leave much room for misinterpretation. The rule isn't subjective. It doesn't state that only a head coach can call a timeout except if it's in a close game and it's loud and the assistant coach calls it then you have to uphold the timeout.
85 you made an ass out of yourself with the whole ray rice thing because you couldn't give it up and you are making the same mistake here.
Nah you give up. This idea that you feel you're more right than me is borderline arrogant. There is no such thing as a "spirit of the law". I acknowledge that the team was undisciplined and that neither MM or Sheldon should've been calling a timeout. However the refs fucked up by upholding a call that they shouldn't have. Then they make up the rules as they go along by saying that the refs can't turn around to see who made a call (understandable) therefore the TO is upheld is ridiculous.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 45m Another wrinkle to Jets Timeout Gate: The play was whistled dead AFTER Nick Mangold had already snapped it to Geno Smith. #nyj
Imo a rule that is often not enforced and is somewhat countered by the instruction that the refs are not to turn their heads away from the field once the play is about to go ahead makes the rule a technicality. How is a ref to know who is calling the TO when there is so much noise and they can't turn their heads? And the OC apparently did want to call the TO. If Rex had seen that he would have called it himself if he had the time. I'm not surprised people are complaining about it. But I just dont' see it as a big deal.
