Watch the tape did the Packers play as if they knew a timeout was called? Did the Jets play like it? No one heard a whistle. However my issue is that a rule was blatantly ignored by the people that are paid to enforce the rules. I can tolerate judgement calls. But not blatantly ignoring a rule.
The national media is too focused on deomestic violence and child abuse to care about the NFL's on-field product. Sells more papers.
What really sucks is we still converted that 4th down after the timeout bs and still couldn't punch it in,we had a million chances to win this game.We haven't blown a 18 point lead since 2002 and haven't won back to back games in Sept since 2009
Fine, but Sheldon and MM had no authority to call a timeout on the sideline. But that got upheld. That bothers me. Now had the rule states that anyone on the Jets sideline can call a timeout then fine I wouldn't be as bothered. It would've been one of the many bad breaks we got that day. But the ref doing what he wants especially when the rule gives you no wiggle room bothers me.
They probably made a mistake and thought it was coming from Rex, either directly or in addition to what they were hearing. They were looking at the field that close to the snap. The ref is looking away and just hears "timeout, timeout".. I imagine it's quite difficult to decipher whether its' coming from the HC or someone else from the sideline. Maybe something bigger to be upset about is why all the disorganization on the Jets sideline?
Rex went up to the ref and told them that he didn't call one. What should've happened was that they should've went to NY and quickly confirm that Rex indeed did not call a timeout. He had his mouth closed the whole time. Once you confirm it then you uphold the TD. The refs are humans they will make mistakes. The refs know the rules they know only the head coach can call a timeout on the sideline. Frankly they ignored the rule and that bothers me.
Were back to this again? Not only is such a thing not reviewable, but they wouldn't have been able change it anyway because they blew the whistle
The Jets intended to call time out. Marty called for one. Sheldon called for one. The ref has to pay attention to the field. By the letter of the law they screwed up, but by the spirit of the law, people should really stop complaining. The place is loud as can be. Nobody can hear anybody. That's why there's miscommunication - because nobody can communicate.
not true. We started 5-1 in 2010. After losing that incredibly frustrating opener to Baltimore, we beat New England, Miami, Buffalo, Minnesota, and Denver all in a row. The New England and Miami wins were both in September. I agree though, we have been very inconsistent under Rex.
the fact that a timeout can only be called from the HC is a minor technicality. It's pretty much irrelevant actually because most teams don't have their OCs and players on the sideline screaming for timeouts without the HC knowing about it.
The head coach didn't call the timeout. That's the point. The head coach told the ref he didn't call the timeout.
Imagine Green Bay scores a game-tying touchdown against the Jets. Then the refs blow it dead. Then the Packers coach says, "I didn't call time out, what are you blowing the play dead for, we scored a touchdown!" Then the refs reverse their own call based on what the Packers coach says. Do you realize how angry you and everyone else on this board would be? This thread would be 50 pages by now, and rightfully so.
The rules are the rules. If their OC calls an ill advised timeout. It should be negated. Like I said I can deal with judgement calls like offsides etc. I can deal with this if Rex himself called the timeout. But the letter of law states that only the head coach can call a timeout on the sidelines. By that rule that timeout should not count.
We got a bad break. I agree with that. But you can't uphold the play after blowing the whistle, and then ask the guy who benefits most from the play whether or not he still wants his time out. That's absurd. Once the ref calls time out, it's over. If Marty weren't signalling wildly and if Sheldon weren't also saying it, I would have a bigger issue. But they were. I know they weren't the head coach and it technically shouldn't have been called, but if Rex could have heard or seen Marty, I'm sure he would have called TO as well.
It's not a "minor technicality" it's a rule just like offsides, holding etc are rules. Just like hitting a defenseless receiver is a penalty etc. The rules state that only the head coach can call a timeout. The head coach tells the ref he didn't call the timeout. That is a blatant error on the refs part. Why have the rule if it can be ignored because the game was close.
Then why have that rule in place then? It defeats the purpose of having the rule. Secondly the timeout was signaled AFTER the ball was snapped.
It's absolutely a minor technicality. How minor of a technicality is it? It's so minor that the refs are instructed to ignore it in certain situations, including this one! Seth Walder @SethWalderNYDN · 18h From the league: only a head coach can or player on the field can call a timeout but play was called correctly because... Seth Walder @SethWalderNYDN · 18h when a snap is imminent, refs are instructed not to turn attention away from field in order to verify who called the timeout.
