Yep, the better the OL the more effective and efficient one's offense can be. Overall, balance is important, both in terms of play on the field and with the cap, although skill players on both sides of the ball should take up a significant portion. The only situation where the DL should take up a significant portion of the cap is where the team runs a 4-3 D alignment and has a DL like the Sack Exchange.
Toth wasn't drafted and hasn't been signed as a UDFA by anyone?!?!?!?! Wow That's a little surprising. I wonder why. The Jets must really be confident in Johnson and Jonotthan Harris. I sure hope that they're right.
Outside of Carpenter; Most of the guys on the line are 5 year exp or under Wesley Johnson, Brain Winters, Kelvin Beachum, Ben Ijalana, Dakota Dozier, Jonotthan Harrison, Brent Qvale, and Brandon Shell. I'm taking the unknown as a positive we've know for years are line is garbage what I see here is an attempt to get youthful bodies in camp and have a competition which is great thing. Half glass full. I am not saying we have 5 pro bowlers but we will have young hungry and energized players looking to get paid and earn a spot
Could be medical, off the field, a really poor measurable that sets off a red flag...any number of things.W. the lack of OL help in this past draft there must be a damn good reason this guy isn't signed.
I thought the 49ers signed him? Edit- He's not healthy and didn't sign. The actual injury is a mystery in itself.
So what are the downsides to this guy ? Reading that link they sound as baffled at his non selection as anybody.
I don't know that much about him except that he was rated as a 6th-7th round prospect. Following are a couple of scouting reports on him. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/jon-toth?id=2557849 http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1995664/jon-toth Looking at those there seems to be a difference of opinion. One (CBS) says that he doesn't have much power and relies on quickness, the other (NFL) says he isn't very quick, is slow and relies more on power. LOL NFL says he isn't very athletic and is slow to get to the 2nd level. CBS says that he doesn't sustain his initial block long enough and is too eager to get to the 2nd level. CBS projects him more as an OG or OT, whereas NFL projects him as a C. I haven't seen him play, so can't say which (if either) is accurate.
CBS is more accurate here; him being too eager to get to the 2nd level and not sustaining his initial block is very true (happens often with him; but this should be very coachable). Don't think he would project as an OT though.
I didn't know too much about Benjamin Braden until the Jets recently signed him after a tryout, so I decided to research him. The results were very promising. NFLDRAFTSCOUT ranked him 14th out of 181 OG's and had a 6th Rd draft grade. Definitely worth developing and could surprise earlier than expected .. who knows. Braden outperformed 3/4 of the top Offensive Lineman at the combine, which was impressive considering his size (I couldn't fit the full results, but added some of the elites' numbers, and Braden joined them at the top). He has the size, speed, strength, and arm length to compete with NFL competition. The knocks on him have been lacks of lower body power and flexibility. Both can be worked on. He's now on my list of underdogs I'd like to see make the team and fight for playing time. He's at Rams rookie camp on a tryout this Friday and Saturday. http://www.ocregister.com/2017/05/1...verett-cooper-kupp-and-other-drafted-players/
