The Colts are the only example I can think of of a team that was clearly tanking a season. Most teams cut players that would make them competitive to rebuild, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are trying to lose the way the Colts were. But I agree, tanking likely doesn't make much a difference in the NFL.
I liked Hundley a lot that year. It was an unpopular opinion though as all the draft website nerds picked him apart. I definitely would've taken him over Petty
What gets me is how much of a mystery Hackenberg is. He 'redshirted' last year and there are reports coming from opposite poles. We've seen reports that he is horrible and doesn't belong in the league and also reports that he was crushing it with the practice team. Its amazing that in this day of twitter and instant information a high profile QB for the New York Jets can get through a whole season as a mystery man
Great college QBs come and go. Personally, I didn't like either prospect all that much, but I would've chosen Hundley over Petty if you had to put a gun to my head. I do know Hundley was required to make full field reads in comparison to Petty who more than likely throws to a pre-determined target.
Brisset injured his throwing hand in the Houston game and it required surgery. He showed a lot of toughness playing against a good Buffalo defense with that injury, and had the surgery after the game. Ron
It's not really a mystery at this point. The Jets didn't like what they saw in camp last year and stuck by their decision to redshirt him as a result. They've only just gotten the chance to see him again a few weeks ago and apparently they're willing to roll with him for at least part of the 2017 season. Accuracy issues rarely go away at the NFL level. Occasionally a guy finds just the right guru and offense and becomes much better but mostly what you saw in college is what you get in the pros, minus a bit for the translation to NFL defenses.
i disagree Br4d. I don't think you know for sure that the Jets didn't like what they saw of him. The plan all along was to have him sit his rookie year. Now if he was truly lighting it up obviously they would've played him but if he's on track with expectations they would've sat him like they did. He could be horrible or he could be progressing as they expect, either way that involved him sitting and waiting like he did. the wildcard here is the new QB coach and OC. That means a new set of eyes on Hackenberg. Hackenberg is just a mystery to them as he is to us fans and any new set of eyes comes with opinions, that might mean negative, needs to sit opinions or fast track on the field opinions
That first drive should be seen as what Hack can do if he can get it together. If he can do that consistently he will have been the steal of the draft.
So the next question you ask is how can we get him to do that consistently? Reps, opportunity, reps, protection, reps, comfortability, reps, weapons, reps.
Thanks for the phil 101 class. I am now enlightened? Did it ever occur to you that maybe the qbs this year were not worth reaching for. Of course not it couldnt possibly be that.. despite anyone with a brain saying this was a terrible qb class. It must be that hack is the future. There is no other logical explanation. Dude hack is a joke and wont get any serious consideration this year as a starter. I am sorry if you are still in the geno is the future camp but he is no longer on the team. So this is now pathetic jets fans next project but Hack wont start more than 4 games next year.. we will win less than 4 games and draft a qb. You believe whatever you want but thats what is going to happen. We are tanking before the season has started. Cant you see this? Picking another overrated qb in the first round this year would have set us back another 3-4 years... so we wait one more year.
A few Jets were at 24th Annual Gridiron Gala in Manhatten including Enunwa and Hackenberg. The following quotes are from an article written by Newsdays Tom Rock. Asked if Christian Hackenberg has taken “the next step” in his progress as an NFL quarterback, Enunwa decided to hold back on that assessment. “I definitely think he has taken ‘a’ next step, you know?” he said. “He’s definitely gotten better, he knows what he needs to work on, so I’m excited for him to put it together. It’s hard against air to really tell what he’s doing, but you can tell that he’s worked hard this offseason.” Hackenberg, who was at the event, declined to answer most football questions. He did say that his offseason is “going well” and it is “great to get back with the guys, get back in the flow of things.”
Of course it's only one guy's opinion, but still, "damning with faint praise" seems to fit. At this point I just want to see this "ghost" they call "Hack" actually get on the field in live action. We'll know pretty quickly whether he can do it or not. And god help Macc if he can't!
Tough to make heads or tails on this. For one..Enunwa may have no idea where Hack is at and even if he thought Hack has improved what good is mentioning that in Early May when we don't even know what the QB depth chart is gonna look like? If he praises him there's a level of expectation w. his name attached to it...also Petty or Mccown could take it as a slight, and either could be the guy throwing him the ball this fall. No sense in saying anything definitive at that point in time. The whole thing is very strange. That said I think this was all planned out. They felt strongly about the concept of letting a guy red shirt for a season & obviously feel exposing his growing pains to the vultures of the NY market could be crippling. Perhaps even before they pulled the trigger on him in round 2. While I believe the foot work & accuracy must improve, I think folks are severely over blowing the accuracy portion. Accuracy doesn't need to be the guy's strength. It just needs ton be adequate. He's a big strong athlete w. a cannon of an arm. As long as he can display proper mechanics, throw to an area & have command of the offense;Things can be catered to fit his strengths. In his case, guys who can get down field w. a catching radius. I know one route he can throw on a dime, ad that's the deep in. As for the reports of him being awful. IDK, maybe behind the scenes he did stink, but I watched quite a few TC sessions on periscope...thought he looked pretty darn good in portions of individual & team, and i'd be reading the comments live stream of how horrible the guy looks.Unless my eyes were deceiving me, or the like, I'm taking alot of these criticisms w. a grain of salt. People wanna see this guy fail for whatever the reason.
I don't think people want him to fail. Rather, as a fan base, we have the personality of a kid with ADHD on speed. Everyone wants results NOW and will bang their head on the wall in frustration until those results happen, and when they do finally happen, it will grant 15 minutes of euphoric release before the next fix is needed and people are back to rocking back and forth anxiously. That's a veteran response by Quincy. Praise the guy without going out on a limb and gave the press nothing
I guarantee there are many on this board alone that want Hack to fail, their ego as to them rating a player is too important to them. They would rather be able to say I told you so, than to see Hack succeed and have to eat crow. Of course they would never admit this.
