NEW YORK _ Five days ago, Rick Lyle and Kevin Mawae were relaxing in the Jets' locker room, sharing stories about the crazy events of last Jan. 4 - the day Bill Belichick quit. Lyle laughed, recalling how stunned he was upon hearing the news in the hallways of Weeb Ewbank Hall. He figured it was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing.

Little did he know that it would happen again.

"You're kidding me," Lyle replied on Saturday when informed that coach Al Groh had resigned to accept the head-coaching position at Virginia. "Holy smoke. Unbelievable. Oh, my God. Wow. Good grief. This was as completely unexpected as it was last year."

That pretty much captured the reaction of the players, who must feel like unwanted orphans. For the third time in one year, a head coach has walked out on the Jets - Bill Parcells, Belichick and Groh.

Safety Victor Green was shocked and confused, wondering why Groh would leave a marquee job for the college ranks.

"He came in, took us to 9-7 and I thought he'd be pleased with that, but, obviously, something went on behind closed doors for him to step out. I'm surprised he'd give up an opportunity like this. It's any coach's dream to coach in the NFL, and to get knocked to a college job, man, it's rough."

One player, who requested anonymity, said: "One guy jumped after one day and one guy waited a year. I guess when opportunity knocks, you have to go for it."

The players said they never detected any signs from Groh that he was thinking of a move. On Tuesday, he addressed the final team meeting, providing detailed instructions on the offseason program and upcoming dates for minicamp. He also met individually with players and assistant coaches.

"I don't get stunned anymore," tackle Jumbo Elliott said. "I've seen too many things over the years."

Green said he'd like assistant head coach Maurice Carthon to replace Groh.

"He's a hard-working coach who knows the players," he said. "The players respect him. Guys go out and play for Mo. He'd be better suited than someone from outside, someone who would change the complexion of the team. He has the same mentality as Parcells."

    here's another interesting article:

COPYRIGHT 2001 New York Daily News

    Byline: Gary Myers

NEW YORK _ THE TRIO of Ray Handley, Pete Carroll and Al Groh failed to distinguish themselves following Bill Parcells on the sidelines. It's not nearly as intimidating a job for new Jets GM Terry Bradway to replace Parcells calling the shots in the team's war room.

In his four drafts, Parcells did not pick one player for the Jets who has made it to the Pro Bowl, unless you count Curtis Martin, who cost the Jets first- and third-round picks when New England chose not to match the Jets' offer sheet in 1998.

From 1997-2000, Parcells drafted 38 players and only eight are starters for the Jets going into training camp, including three from last year's first round - Shaun Ellis, John Abraham and Anthony Becht, the last two from the Keyshawn Johnson trade. Eighteen of his draft choices remain on the team.

Parcells will get into the Hall of Fame for what he did as a coach. In a hit-and-miss business, he's not a Hall of Famer for his personnel decisions. He often was able to overcome personnel mistakes with his coaching.

Bradway is in charge of the draft for the first time in his NFL career. But he will run it as a democracy with coach Herm Edwards and personnel director Dick Haley.

The pressure, however, is on Bradway to come up with immediate impact players, especially at wide receiver, where the Jets have still not replaced Johnson. "I've been in this league for 16 years and I don't feel any different in my position now than I did the last nine years in Kansas City," he said. "I was directly involved in the decision-making. I don't feel any added pressure."

Bradway's first NFL job was as a scout for the Giants from 1986-92. He and Parcells developed a relationship - he was all set to go with him to Tampa in 1992 before Parcells turned down the Bucs - and it was Parcells' recommendation that got Bradway the interview with the Jets and ultimately the job.

"Bill is a great football man and one of the best coaches," Bradway said. "I've been very lucky to have been around Bill and Marty (Schottenheimer). With the Giants, it was the scouts scout and the coaches coach. For some reason, Bill let me cross the line."

Bradway recalled standing up in the Giants' war room in the fifth round in 1989 and being one of the 2-3 people who spoke up for David Meggett. That worked out pretty good.

He's had limited contact with Parcells since taking the job in January. "Bill is great," he said. "He's not going to interfere. I know if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here."

    Parcells' advice to Bradway?

"He reminded me that with all the other things that go along with this position, getting football players is No. 1," he said. "I understand that. My background is player personnel."

He just needs a better batting average than Parcells.

    Chief concern

Chiefs president Carl Peterson said Tuesday it's 50-50 the trade with the Rams for QB Trent Green gets done. "It will be a draft day decision," Peterson said. The Rams want the Chiefs' Nos. 1 and 3 picks. They already have K.C.'s No. 2 as compensation for Dick Vermeil. "I told them the first and third is just too much," Peterson said. The Chiefs are picking 12th overall and if this trade gets done, it will be when the Chiefs are on the clock. "If there is a player there with our 12th pick they really covet, we will hear from them," Peterson said. "If not, then we won't." The word is the Rams want Miami DT Damione Lewis. KC's two proposals: Giving up their Nos. 1 and 3 picks, but the Rams return the No. 2 they got for Vermeil. Or flopping picks in the first round - Peterson said he would do it for either of the Rams' first-rounders at No. 20 or No. 29 - plus the Chiefs' third-rounder. This is a trade Peterson must get done. Do you think there's any chance the

Chiefs will go with Trent Dilfer or Steve Beuerlein, both free agents, or holdover Todd Collins, after letting Elvis Grbac go?

    Take your pick

Usually the top of the draft is settled by now, but after the Chargers take Virginia Tech QB Michael Vick, it's a mess. The Cardinals, at No. 2, could take Texas OT Leonard Davis (he was the hot rumor on Tuesday), Florida DT Gerard Warren or Missouri DE Justin Smith. Or trade down. The Browns, at No. 3, could go for TCU RB LaDainian Tomlinson, Michigan WR David Terrell or trade down. If Cleveland moves down, its target is LB Dan Morgan, who played for Butch Davis at Miami. . . . The Packers, at No. 10, are one team that could move up. If they do, it's for Warren or Missouri's Smith. . . . Trading down is a real cost-saver. Last year, the Redskins gave LB LaVar Arrington, the No. 2 pick, a $10.75 million signing bonus. The No. 5 pick, Ravens RB Jamal Lewis, got $6.5 million to sign. . . . If Tomlinson is on the board when the Patriots are up at No. 6, he could be their pick. Bill Belichick needs an every-down back. Kevin Faulk led the Pats with 570 yards rushing. . . . Panthers, at No. 11, also want Tomlinson but would have to move up to get him. . . . Dolphins could take Purdue QB Drew Brees if he's around at No. 26. That would not be good news for ex-Jet Ray Lucas, who signed with Dolphins in the offseason. It would also be the second year in a row Lucas' team picked a QB in the first round. It happened last year when Jets selected Chad Pennington with one of their four No. 1 picks. . . . If Brees is on the board, the Raiders may take him at No. 27. Rich Gannon is 35. . . . The identity of the team picking second may change, but Warren could go in that spot regardless. "Most personnel people I've spoken to have Gerard as the best defensive player in the draft," said his New York-based agent Joel Segal of Magnum Sports and Entertainment. "I feel confident he should be the second player picked."

    Serving up Rice

Seattle is expected to sign Jerry Rice after June 1. He should be an excellent teacher with the Seahawks likely to take a wide receiver with the seventh overall pick, whether it's North Carolina State's Koren Robinson or Clemson's Rod Gardner. . . . One of the more intriguing players in the draft could be Wisconsin WR Chris Chambers, who set a scouting combine record with a 45-inch vertical jump. He also clocked a sizzling 4.29 in the 40-yard dash in his private workout. "I stack up pretty well (with the top wideouts), especially with a bigger guy like David Terrell," Chambers said Tuesday. "I can run and be physical, coming from the Big 10. I've got a lot of upside." The Jets are not expected to take him, but he should go late in the first round.

Now that you have had some articles to read let's get into this "innovative offense". We had FOUR miracle wins that year, let's see how the innovative offense helped us those games:

Week 2: Down 19-7 to NE the innovative offense was scrapped and viny led us back late to a 20-19 win. I guess the gameplan was to lull NE to sleep w/ such great O through 3 1/2 qtrs?

Week 3: Webeat Buf 27-14 but needed a KR TD AND a hail mary at the end of the 1st half or else we are down 14-13. Such innovation:lol:

Week 4: We score 6 point in 58 minutes and again we need Vinny to ail us out. Yes the call to win it gets Henning credit BUT hat play easily could have been intercepted thus costing us the game.

Week 8: Against a team that Ray Lucas swept the year before we managed 7 points through 3+ qtrs and the gameplan was scrapped and Vinny led s back. Lost in the euphoria of jumbo's catch was it was an unneccessary call. we were moving at will then had to use a ridiculous trick play that he nearly dropped. if he did and we lost there would have been a million comlaints.

Now let's check the rest of the year to see ow this inovaive O helped us:

    Week 1: we scored 20 against a D that gave up 20 a game.
    Week 6: we scored 3 against a D that gave up 16 a game.
Week 7: 1 of 2 complete perfromances of the year in a 34-17 win over the 5-11 Pats.
Week 9: The innovative O had us down 17-7 at the half en roue to 23-20 loss.
Week 10: The innovative O had us down 17-0 to Denver.
Week 11: The innovative O had us down 20-0 in the 3rd qtr. at Indy.
Week 12: 2nd of 2 complete performances all year in 20-3 win over Miami.
Week 13: For once get off to a lead(17-0) but we needed a late turnover to hold on as the O could only manage 17 pts against a 5-11 team that gave up 22/gm.
Week 14: One again we get off to a good start for a change(20-) but once again we need a late TO to hold on. Why was our O only good for halves of games? was that part of the innovation?
Week 15: Needing 1 in for a playoff spot the innovative O leadsus to 7 points at Oak and the 7 points came in the final minute when our 3rd string QB threw a TD pass.
Week 16: Needing 1 win for a playoff spot the innovative O leads us to 7 points at home againt a D that gave up 19 a game.
Week 17: In a week the actually looked innovative we gavaway the game on TOs and STs. 532 yards of offense and we score 20 pts.

Please stop w/your nonsense bashing Herm about verything an defnedig theother coahces. groh did a terible job here and by the way he had that amazingly talent future dynasty to coach and he ouldn't even ead us to postseason. if Herm get blame for making the playoffs w/ such talent then why doesn't groh get blame for not making it w/ such talet? you have been exposed(yet again), have a good day.

You stated that the coaching was INEPT.. I said well, Dan Henning was STILL the OC and as this article also states, He's was quite innovative that year With what they had.......

You changed the perspective on the discussion as you do.

    Was Dan Henning Inept?

I wasn't coming from arguing that this was one of the most innovative offenses seen - I'm coming from the side that says this coach WAS pretty good here, continued to be pretty good and was Innovative enough NOT to have some hack call him INEPT.

YES the offensive coaching was terrible that year! We couldn't get anything going early in games outting us down early and we wound up throwing theball way too much. The difference btw '00 and '01 was the '01 staff relied on Curtis martin to carry us while in '00 they relied on Vinny, fresh off a major injury PLUS having Chrebet and ward as our top 2WRs.

In 2000 Vinny in 15 games threw the ball 590 times, in 2001 in 6 games Vinny threw it 441 times. 39 times a game in '00, 28 times a ame in '01.

and then you wrote "bottom line is Groh knows more FOOTBALL than Herm ever will". if heknew so much then why couldn't he win w/ the same players herm won w/ the next year? Why did we see a quote like this from Mawae?

"Yeah, we were 6-1 at one point, but a lot of that was despite the fact that Al was the coach. That was the feeling on the team."

In 15 full games he threw it 589 times for an average of 39.27.
He did throw one pass in the Steelers game.

I think part of the problem was that the Jets simply didn't know how to run the ball well that year. The line was the same in 2000 as 2001.
    The stats were vastly different.
    2000: 418 att. for 1471 yards, 3.5 avg
    2001: 445 att. for 2054 yards, 4.6 avg

The Jets rushing attack was inconsistent in 2000.
    Week-by-week rushing statistics:
    34-118 (win)
    17-59 (win)
    36-91 (win)
    24-98 (win)
    21-112 (loss)
    43-164 (win)
    22-79 (win)
    20-51 (loss)
    17-88 (loss)
    22-96 (loss)
    32-133 (win)
    32-59 (win)
    39-211 (win)
    20-10 (loss)
    18-51 (loss)
    21-51 (loss)
