I was a little surprised they cut McCown actually. The new regime picked him as their favored starter from the start and continued to favor him even though Glennon arguably outplayed him when he was on the field in 2014 and was quite good as a rookie in 2013. I now think they'll keep if they don't get adequate compensation, but I also feel like a 4th could do it. The Bucs could go and sign a more seasoned vet who can also serve as a mentor for Jameis, who may need one. Glennon is still young and doesn't quite fill that role. It's obvious this regime doesn't care for him and that he has no future in Tampa. I probably wouldn't give up a 3rd for him (especially a high 3rd like the Jets have), but a 4th is possible. I like Glennon as a prospect going forward much, much more than any of the other QBs in this draft after Mariota and Winston. Here's another option: If this regime doesn't see Coples as a fit in this 3-4 defense, which he was a highly questionable one with Rex, then swapping him and maybe a late round pick for Glennon makes sense. The Bucs get a young DE who could be a lot better in a 4-3 and the Jets get to further revamp the LBs If this Jets regime has done a lot of studying and is confident that Glennon could become an at least quality starting QB for them, then I hope they go get him.
Heh, then they fall into the same position as the Jets. Who do you sign as a qualified vet, it's the same group of ???'s lol. Maybe Sanchez! (to the Bucs that is)
Oh, yeah... This free agent QB class is barren... Right I think if it came down to it, they'd prefer to have a 4th round pick or another starter than keep Glennon. The 3rd round pick thing is a bluff IMO. But we'll see what actually happens within a couple months
Small edit here: IF healthy, I might even prefer Demeco Ryans at ILB once he gets cut... A little older, but can still play and could be a good veteran mentor for Paul Dawson too
If Mariota is gone, the only other QB in the draft worth using a pick on is Petty imo. Taking any other QB would just be wasting the draft pick. At best any of the rest will just be backups if they even stick in the NFL. With our other needs. I'd stick with Hoyer & Geno, and maybe sign a UDFA QB.
Yes, I know sources to get info on other prospects, just don't have the time this year. Sorry, I missed the Pace cut.
I don't see that happening this year. There are much more pressing needs and only so many draft picks and cap space. I think it would be a bad move to try to replace Breno this year and ignore a more pressing need.
Nothing wrong with drafting a backup to keep in a system, which can be any of these guys really (UDFA included, but I'd rather stick with the % since UDFA hardly stick). In my opinion, they draft someone who could possibly start or be a viable backup (ex Cousins). I understand I think higher of some the QBs than you do, and I respect that. That said, I agree on Petty in the 4th.
No, there's nothing wrong with drafting a backup if you don't have one, but imo, if they go with Geno this year and he doesn't pan out, I would expect them to possibly keep him as the backup and then look to draft his replacement. The one exception would be Petty imo, who could possibly develop into a starter or a backup if nothing else.
I read some early Gruden QB camp stuff and it seems like Gruden is high on Petty and thinks he has the best arm talent of the group (?).
Not many complaints here. The only tiny worry would be edge rush but as you said we can't fix everything in one year and we also should be able to rely on our big boys up front. Is this assuming Mariota is gone? Either way I like it, it's just going to be very interesting as to what the Jets do at 6 if Mariota's there and they already sign free agents to stop gap quarterback. It'd be bitter sweet if Hoyer came here and won a division. I also think he may command more money. A+ though it's about as perfect a mock offseason can get. It's just funny because we could look back at this a year from now or three years from now and we all think it's perfect and the draft picks could all be great or busts. Just how the NFL Draft works. Good job though!
Thank you. It's true that the edge rushing spot doesn't get any major additions, but in this scenario, they keep Coples for 2015 and believe/hope he can continue to grow as a 3-4 OLB. He's been a decent starter so far, but certainly not a major factor. He had his best sack totals in 2014 though. Babin was surprisingly effective against the run and pass by PFF's metrics. I predict he'll be a contributor in 2015 too. They add Acho because of his familiarity with Bowles defense. Then there are the 2014 draftees, IK and Reilly, who showed a little something, but it remains to be seen if these guys are rotational contributors, potential starters, or even if they make the roster. Tull could be the future at the position. So there are prospects and good players and in this scenario it's a very, very open competition for the starting spots and rotational duties. I could see them coming out of this season with two quality starters going forward or still needing help with the position. And yes, I assumed Mariota was gone one way or another before 6 to make things easier. If he is actually there, IMO they should either take him or trade with Philly. I gave Hoyer the same numbers as Josh McCown. I think he was heading for a bigger payday before his midseason collapse and benching.
The healthy backend of the defense along with Cro, McCourty and Johnson would most likely help the pass rush out a lot anyways. We weren't completely deficient on the pass rushing end anyways as hopefully Bowles won't do things like put Coples out on split ends to jam them and waste him on downs like that.
How does it change now that we got Brandon Marshall and resigned David Harris? Do we still go K. White in the 1st? I say yes be bold get a stud for when Marshall implodes or his football shelf life kicks in. If White is gone to the RAID____ERS maybe we go Dante Fowler at 6. If we trade out with Philly and get their boat load of picks I wouldn't mind a cornerback.
Yes, that throws a big wrench in this plan, as reality will quickly do to mock offseasons and drafts. Since Harris really signed a pretty much guaranteed 2-year deal (the 3rd is not at all), I don't expect them to address ILB in this draft unless some amazing value presents itself or it's late on day 3. I also don't expect them to use #6 on a WR now since they have a (very solid) group of three under contract for a considerable amount of money combined. I would think that if they pick at #6, it'll be a pass-rusher, Trae Waynes if they love him or Marcus Mariota. However, if Mariota is there, I think it's very plausible that the Eagles move up and include #20, their 2015 2nd, QB Nick Foles, either their 1st or 2nd in 2016 and hopefully a later round 2015 pick. So if I posted a mock offseason now, it would look very different
It will change constantly until draft day but I still find them interesting. I want no part of Mariota and if Philly is willing to deal then the Jets should listen. Even with Milliner and McDougle coming back I wasn't impressed with Milliner when he played. So if the Jets load up at CB I think it will solve their biggest weakness. In free agency I hope to get at least 1 guard.
As do I. There's a rumor that a deal is in place for Philly to move up to 6 if Mariota is there and I'd also probably make that trade too. If Nick Foles played half as well as he did in 2013, the Jets will have an above average QB. An acquisition like this makes them potentially competitive in 2015. They brought in Brandon Marshall and resigned their defensive centerpiece. With legitimate QB play (which we arguably haven't had since the first half of Brett Favre's Jet campaign or Sanchez's collective postseason performances), this could very well be a team that at least makes the playoffs, especially considering the cap space, high draft pick and potential extras from a deal with Philly. And it's not like the OC is a slouch; he's brought offensive success where he has gone and seems to get the most out of his players (a la Ryan Fitzpatrick and CJ Spiller most recently). So I'd trust him with Foles, who has already shown he can play at a very high level in the NFL I feel like we can hope McDougle becomes a player and we can hope that Milliner is healthy by the start of the season and continues to play decent football, as he has since December of 2013. Honestly, I like what I've seen from Marcus Williams a lot and can conceive him being higher on the depth chart than Milliner or McDougle in 2015, but ultimately there are nothing but question marks at CB, which is, of course, an essential position for Bowles' defense. So I expect at least one free agent acquisition with Cromartie being an obvious favorite. They're also looking into Cary Williams and could be interested in Chris Culliver. Especially if it's only one free agent acquisition, I expect a draftee in the 1st or 2nd. I could even imagine 2 free agent corners and an additional draft pick. Even though this team has spent a lot of high picks in corners in recent years, I don't think that means a damn thing. It's a new regime and Bowles happens to value CBs immensely. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Trae Waynes ends up being the pick at 6 or another guy like Jalen Collins or Kevin Johnson is the pick at 20 if a trade happens. Those are my thoughts... And then none of this will actually happen. Still fun though
I prefer Matt Moore over Hoyer as a back up... But man I hope it doesn't come to that and we get Mariota and Geno is our back up.
