It's such a tough situation here with Mo , for the FO. If Mo does have a monster year then we will have to break the bank to sign him to an extension, unless we franchise him. If we let him walk without any compensation then that's just one of the stupidist moves the franchise could ever make, and that's saying a lot for this franchise Frankly I don't see what we could get for this guy in a trade that would be worth letting him walk. The QBs coming out next season aren't really awe inspiring and , unless we are getting a starting QB in return I don't see anything else we are in that desperate need of to justify losing Mo. This really is a tough one.
Could Mo be used to regenerate our ol? Trade him for a couple of decent ot/og. Everybody keeps talking about a qb in a mo trade but we need to protect our qb 1st. No point in getting rivers for example and him getting killed by a decent dl every Sunday
40 million guaranteed, it all depends on how it's paid out. I mean if it's a 5 year 40 million contract that is fully guaranteed that's not bad, on the other hand if it's a 4 year 60 million with 490 guaranteed that's to much.
I'd say it's pretty likely that him and Sheldon both put up better numbers this year with our improved secondary. Then the staff has to answer the million dollar question and that's if Williams can step in a put up the same if not better #'s than Wilk. As good as Wilk is he was never considered a top pro prospect. Sure plenty of great college players have never panned out but it's the risk this franchise might eventually have to take.
Williams isn't leverage until he actually does something in the league. Wilkerson is a proven commodity.
It Doesn't matter what Wilk was considered in the draft process. Right now, he's a second team NFL all pro.
Understood. But there has to be some internal feeling that Williams can eventually surpass second team all pro. And do that without the 15 million price tag at first.
While paying Wilkerson more than he's worth is not an acceptable option, i am not sure what the best answer is beyond that. One of the reasons I was for packaging him in a trade with Tenn for the second pick was at the least the issues going forward would be some other team's to deal with. There is no great option now, on the assumption he is asking for more than he is worth. Of course the other scenario is that the FO is mistakenly undervaluing him, which would be a problem of a different sort. I suppose it is possible that Wilk is asking for the right percentage less than what Watt signed for, but the Jets think that number is still too high. For some reason I doubt that is what is holding up a deal.
There's also the possibility of him busying hard. People need to relax a bit. Williams, by all means looks the part, but we have to let him play a down before we call him Sapp. You guys could be setting yourselves up for disappointment. The NFL is a different animal and has a way of making rookies look like...well...rookies. I just have a problem with the Jets always splurging in free agency and never being able to take care of their own. Wilkerson is home grown, right out of Jersey and a team leader. I would really rather not see him go.
I also can't see Wilk looking for Watt money. He's not Watt. He's an all pro, but Watt may be the best defensive player the league has seen when it's all said and done. I think it's the Jets undervaluing him which would be odd considering we've overpaid a ton of players this off-season
The problem with your speculation is mentioned in your own post. the current FO already has the opposite of a track record of being cheap. Perhaps they think they can't tie up too much money on the DL what with Richardson's situation having to soon be dealt with.
Wilkerson is a great player. Both he and Sheldon are top five 3-4 DE's in this league. But the Jets may very well have a decision to make on which one they want to keep. Especially after drafting Williams. I'd love to be able to keep them both long term. Hopefully the Jets can get something done with him.
We all get I think why the Jets drafted Williams in terms of BPA and apparent lack of better options. But it just added to what was and is invested in the DL which, when coupled with what might be going on with Wilkerson's contract, amounts to a rather difficult set of choices going forward.
I'm not sure it does. All you have to do is cut Revis and Harris, right? seriously, the cap keeps going up. So, it's a case of the goal posts being moved further back. And I don't really care that a unit, the DL, could be expensive. If they are worth the money you pay them. If not, you don't. So far, nobody else has stepped up to grab a chunk (cepting Revis).
It is definitely a possibility that the Jets decide to make the hard decision on Wilk for the long term, but the fact is that they have him under contract for a year and can franchise him next year if needed. People are crapping themselves about all the money we spent this offseason but the fact is that most of that money is spread between 2015 and 2016, and don't quote me on it but I think Rich's 5th option year is 2016. The Jets have 2 years to figure out how to make Rich/Wilk/Williams work on the same Dline and if there needs to be an odd man out then it happens after the 2016 season
The only other comparable talent at his position is JJ Watt. He's been the anti-Revis, he's been everything the Jets were hoping for when they drafted him, he's earned it. If the Williams pick is the real deal the Jets have the makings of one of the greatest d-lines in NFL history keep them intact as long as possible!
For all of those saying we don't have to worry about Mo because we can just franchise him next year you have to understand that the franchise tag will cost us $15-16 mil. Not only would be laying out that kind of money but it would be for a player that would not agree to a long term deal that we could end up losing anyway.
The issue is guaranteed money, especially over the long term. There's only so much of that you can give. If the Jets valued Wilkerson as much as Wilkerson values Wilkerson, the extension would have been signed sealed and delivered already.
As much as the most of us like David Harris, he really was overpaid (which is not a problem given the fact that we HAD to spend money and he's been a great leader for the team). The point is, is it really safe to presume that the FO won't overpay him (Mo Wilk)?
