Head Coach Guys like Parsells, Lombardi etc. won titles with great players. But they were great organizers too. Rex has not shown that ability. Idzik will not tie his future to Rex. You may like him but any GM wants his own man at the helm. Unfortunately, Rex has tied himself to the wrong side of the ball. QB's run the show in the modern NFL. Rex is behind the times. Notice how little interaction there was between Rex and Geno in Sunday's game. He should have spoken to him after every series. Let someone else call defensive signals and get involved with the whole game. If you were looking for a coach wouldn't you want someone who had the pulse of the whole team not just the defense. You win with a Quarterback. Rex has no idea how to coach one. He will land on his feet but the Jets need organizer who knows the modern NFL game.
Well... Yeah, I went overboard in terms of what I said I expect from the get-go. I'm just frustrated that after Smith played well for a rookie in Week 3, he looked absolutely terrible in Week 4 and he can't keep playing like that consistently and still be considered to have potential. I know it's just one game, but he can't keep playing anywhere near that awful level, that's bad even for a rookie. He has to learn from these mistakes. In Week 3 he was great (for a rookie). I expect more INTs than TDs from a rookie over the course of the season, but not 3 times as many turnovers as TDs. And I want to see promise, and in Year 2 I want him to no longer be playing like a rookie. Smith shows promise, he makes good throws - but I feel like he's having too many turnovers, and that 30+ turnovers is too much even for a rookie, and I don't like that he's on pace for 40+. I want him to settle in and play better, and hopefully not end up having 3 - 4 turnovers per game be an every-game thing. I do expect rookies to have those 3+ turnover games, but plenty of rookie QBs only have 13 - 17 or so INTs + 1 - 2 lost fumbles for the entire season, so there have to be a lot of no turnover games mixed in there (since they will have the 3 - 4 turnover games), so therefore I don't feel like it's that unreasonable to expect some of no-turnover games. Given that lots of QBs have ~15 INTs their entire rookie season, I think it's reasonable to be concerned that Smith could have an interception problem given that he already has 8 interceptions and 2 or 3 lost fumbles (don't remember which it is... I think it's 3 because I can remember 2 from Week 4) in just the first quarter of the season. Maybe it's normal to have a higher rate early in the season and then it tapers off and maybe a lot of the 15 INT rookie QBs had their first 10 INTs in the first 6 or 7 weeks? I don't know. I just know that if Smith continues playing like he did in Week 4, the Jets will be lucky to win another game this season. (I don't think he will keep playing like in Week 4, but it's distressing to see him be that bad, and when Sanchez played terribly, it was usually followed by collapsing for the next 2 - 5 weeks, so I'm bracing myself for Smith to do the same even though obviously he's a different person.) I hope he plays better and that when he promised members of the defense that this wouldn't happen again, that he is able to follow through on that. I do know that if he has a 40+ turnover season, which he's on pace for, that the Jets should move on from him. That's too much even for a rookie. And if the Jets did have to move on from Smith (it's way too early for that, but these boards are partly for speculation) then I think you draft a promising QB in the first round of 2014, and you hope that he shows whatever it is you want to see from a rookie that makes you think he could be a franchise QB with top-10 potential down the road.
Not a chance Smith has a 40 turnover season. Just because he shouldn't last that long as a starter if he starts getting close. If Geno Smith has a 40 turnover season, not only should he not return as starter, but Woody should fire Rex, Morningweg, and the entire staff for letting that happen (aka. dropping him back over and over)
Keep Rex This team is extremely young and practically in a rebuilding period. Yet Rex remains the number one reason we've been competitive despite our offensive woes the last couple years. He's been saddled with a QB who may prove to be one of the worst of the last 20 years, yet we made consecutive conference championship game appearances. A lot of credit goes to the head coach, as it should. Hes a bad organizer? Hmmm...not sure about that considering hes come into some huge games with absolutely flawless gameplans and won. You really think that Rex Ryan wouldn't be hired in a second by another team should he get fired? Absolutely he would. Cant imagine Idzik wouldve taken the job if he didnt like Rex as coach, as hes said as much. Guys love to play for him and he's a defensive genius. Coaches like that need to be given the head job, no matter what other deficiencies he may have, because if its not us you can bet someone else will. And because this guy is more than capable to learn the nuances of the job and get better. I've seen him improve every year and get more comfortable every season. Why didn't he talk to Geno? Umm...pretty sure Mornhinweg and the 20 other coaches on that side of the ball got that handled and are giving the rookie enough advice and information regarding what he should be doing with the ball. The defensive-minded head coach interjecting with some obvious shit is just unnecessary. Plus I'm sure Rex had his hands full with the defense and trying to keep the team in the game. Rex knows how to coach football players. A QB is a football player. Its the job of the whole organization to support the QB, not solely the defense-first head coach. I guess youve never heard the whole "defense wins championships" thing huh? Guess youve never played football either. Figures. Sorry but you're completely wrong about Rex. Glad you're not the GM.
You can't be serious. Last season his best coaching job? You are aware that we got absolutely blown out like 5 or 6 times. 6-10 could only be a great coaching job if you have an awful roster (we didn't, at least not on D) and keep your team in every game. We were annihilated repeatedly last season by any playoff-caliber team. That's not good coaching, sorry. That said, I'm fine going forward with Rex as head coach. I don't see how we can upgrade from him by going with an unknown assistant coach or something like that.
It was amazing we won 6 games. We had the worst offensive talent in the league we had Sparano running that O(though that was Rex's fault) we lost our best defensive player our STs were ravaged b/c of all the injuries and lack of talent. Sure we got blown out a few times but we also blew out a playoff team vs. Indy and nearly beat a title game team in NE. He did an amazing job last year
We had a solid o-line (better than this season as Ducasse and Colon are clear downgrades at the guard position). Greene put up 1,100 yards on 4 YPC. Not earth-shattering, but not terrible production for a RB1. Powell had a nice 2nd half of the season too. The WR corps was terrible and so was the QB. No questions there. That said, well coached teams don't get blown out over and over and over. Last season was a bad year for Rex, from how he managed the QB position, to his gameplans, to his in-game adjustments. He just didn't have it and got very demoralized by year-end. He was a sad sight in the postgame pressers, there's no way he was inspiring confidence in the players. I think he's done a good job so far this season, although there are still areas for improvement. He's a borderline top 10 coach in this league. No reason to let him go.
Yes- I think that right now, Smith is on pace for far worse than normal rookie play. The turnovers are a killer. It's better for Smith to not try to force throws that will get intercepted if his aim isn't perfect, and settle for check downs instead in those situations. He also needs to make protecting the ball a higher priority when he's running or about to get sacked. He has to learn that you can't just run backwards to avoid pressure. In Week 1 he would throw the ball away, but lately he stopped doing that, I guess trying to be a hero and make plays that aren't really there. I think Rex said the right thing- that he's not going to pull him as the starter at this time, implying that he's close to pulling him. He's on notice that his starter status is in jeopardy and if he shits the bed again in Week 5, we'll start Simms in Week 6. He'll be at 15 turnovers by the end of Week 5 if he doesn't elevate his play, and that's unacceptable for ~1/3 of the way into a season. Smith isn't "required" to win against the Falcons, but if he takes away the Jets' opportunity to win by a slew of turnovers (including one before the broadcast even started, that's not even on NFL Rewind) then he needs to sort those problems out on the bench while we see if Simms can protect the football. The Steelers game is very winnable, and if Smith gives up 14+ points with turnovers to the Falcons, I won't trust him not to blow it against the Steelers.
The media love their little word games. I think this was just a matter of them being able to bill this as "Ryan versus Ryan".
There's pretty much no scenario out there where Geno would get benched before the bye. He is not on notice from Rex, he will not be benched if we lose a game in which we are 10 point underdogs and down our top 2 WRs. That just won't happen. The only call for Simms is from a small portion of the fanbase. There is no call for him to play within the organization and the GM (who has the most power) used a high value asset on Geno. You're not thinking about this clearly. Smith is not playing far worse than normal rookie QB play. He has the same number of turnovers as Eli. He's also on pace to throw for 4,500 yards and account for 20 TDs. That would break the rookie yardage record (or close, I forget what Luck did last season). Normal rookie QBs throw for about 3,000 yards (if that) and do not generate many TDs. The turnovers may kill you, but that's because you are looking at this as a playoff season when you shouldn't be. The AFC is way too good and we have too many holes to make the playoffs. That's just something you and a lot of the fanbase is going to have to come to terms with (maybe the likely blowout in Atlanta this week will help you along).
Our OL stunk last year our 2 AP caliber guys having probably the worst seasons of their careers. The OL this year has been MUCH better, not even close. Greene got some yards late in the year, he was never reliable and he averaged under 4 YPC. Powell is averaging 4.4 YPC. Some games got away from them, they were overmatched in almost all phases due to lack of healthy talent and yet in Dec we were still in the playoff race.
Are you serious with this? Our o-line rated very well last season under advanced metrics, top 10 in the league. Moore was a good player. He's been replaced by arguably the worst starting guard in the league (Ducasse). Slauson was a better player than a castoff like Colon, who couldn't cut it on a terrible Steelers o-line. Bargain basement shopping by Idzik. You could live with Colon if he is your worst player on the o-line, but when the other guard is even worse than he is, it's a mess. Powell was on the team last season too, so not sure what your point is there. We were in no way overmatched on D. We were mostly overmatched at QB and in our coaching staff. And I'm sorry, but who was the "genius" that hired Sparano and thought Tebow running the wildcat would be an effective offensive package? The offense sucking is on the head coach, because, you know, he's the HEAD COACH
OMG, you have to be kidding? Yeah great job hiring Saprano and handling the QB's. Yeah, wonderful job against the Titans last year, sitting Mcelroy and having Timmy boy as our backup even though he was injured and could not play. Mexi was great that night. 12 more games to go and our defensive coordinator will be gone. Good riddance. Did anyone see the NFL highlights of the Buff game. Wilkerson had to go over to Rex and tell him to calm down, everything will be ok after the Jets got another penalty. That's our leader, the one who is suppose to be calm, calculated and think ahead while managing the game. He is a clown and not head coaching material in the slightest manner
Our OL stunk last year, couldn't open holes for the RBs, couldn't protect the QB but other than they were great. The Pitt OLs weren't bad, they look worse than they are b/c ben is at his best on the move and takes a lot of hits b/c of it. a player can't improve? you don't see a difference in Powell? maybe it's the OL? Our D was not good last year, when teams needed to score they scored. We were good in rankings b/c opposing O's knew that if they didn't turn it over they'd win b/c our O and STs were so bad so it made our D look much better than it was. He gets the blame for brining in Sparano but not Tebow. We had the worst healthy offensive talent in the league, w/ Mark this year we'd be 3-0/4-1 and w/ a rookie turning it over every other possession we are 2-2. he's one of the best coaches in the league. Jet fans deserve Rich Kotite as HC and Bubby Brister at QB
I didn't say that he should be benched if he loses to the Falcons. But I think he should be benched if he has another implosion. If he has 4 - 6 turnovers and 0 - 1 TD, I don't think he should keep playing. At the rate things are going, he's going to hit about 25 turnovers or so by the bye, and at that point the Jets will be 2-7. At that point, Rex will almost definitely get fired, unless the Jets somehow won 6 of their last 7 games. But at that point the team might not be playing very hard anymore because it would just be known that Rex is going to get fired, and most guys would shift from playing to win to playing to avoid injury. Rex does not want to get fired. If he feels like Week 4 is the beginning of a trend, I don't think he'll wait until after the bye to switch QBs. If we're 2-7 or 3-6 with consistent 2 - 5 turnover games from Smith, it will be too late for Rex to save his job, Smith will be at about 26 turnovers by the bye, and he might actually get fired at the bye. I don't think it's a case of "stick with Smith no matter how bad he is, until the bye week at least." I think if he struggles a lot in this game, say he has 3 or so turnovers in the first half, he might get pulled at halftime. If he has a 3 - 4 turnover game with 0 - 1 TDs, I don't think he will be starting in Week 6. Just my opinion- but it doesn't sound like Rex is so all-in on Smith. He wants to "win now" to save his job, and if it seems like Smith is going to have a brutal rookie year he's going to make a switch and try to salvage the season before it's too late, even if that means damaging Smith's development by not giving him 9 weeks or 16 weeks. If it gets to where it seems like the unknown Simms gives the Jets a better chance to win than Smith, I think Rex will play Simms.
I guess I don't really expect Geno to have a 3 turnover first half again. For one, the Falcons D is not nearly as good as the Titans D. Our o-line should hold up better and without the same pass rush, I think Geno's ball security will be a lot better. I do expect he'll throw an INT or 2, but that's probably because we may fall behind by a significant margin in the 2nd half. If I had to guess, Geno will probably have a 300 yard, 2 TD, 2 INT type performance and we'll lose like 31-20. The fact is, no matter what, Rex will have to say to himself "is Matt Simms going into Atlanta down his top 2 WRs and having a better game than Geno"? I don't see how the answer to that could be yes. Rex also risks alienating Idzik by benching Geno. Not to mention creating aa media firestorm, endless "circus atmosphere" articles, and a huge spotlight on a suddenly fading team that might go 6-10. I think any serious evaluation of benching Geno would not be done until the bye. Overall, Geno has had 3 really bad quarters out of 12. There is no veteran proven winner on the bench behind him. People need to see the big picture here.
This week he doesn't have holmes or Hill- that is a huge blow to him and unless Marty becomes conservative and we are running all day I would expect a few TOs from geno. It will be almost like last year when we had Chaz Schilens starting, there's just no one to get open.
He's a good coach, I just wish he'd pay a little bit more attention to our offense. We could have been decent in 2011-2012 if he and the FO paid attention to our O.
