you could say the opposite to teams who rush the passer with 4 but drop 7 in coverage. "they don't blitz becuase they cna't cover WRs one on one with the CBs" every team has strangths and weaknesses. The goal as a coach is to know how to us ethe strengths and cover up weakness

It's not just smoke and mirrors. It's also Revis and Cromartie. But a better pass rush together with those two would make the Jet pass D even stronger.

But the big picture is not so bad, despite the mediocre number of sacks. As I read the stats the Jets are tied for second in the league for lowest yards allowed per passing attempt, at 6.4, after Chicago at 6.2.

One less favorable stat for the Jets is that they have given up 15 TD passes, which is closer to average. Since the Vikes game they have only been giving up an average of one receiving TD a game, though. Or as much as one a game, if you want to look at it that way. heh.

Good post. The only thing I'd want to tweak is that I think the single most important benefit of blitzing is to force the opposing quarterback to get rid of the ball quickly, and as a matter of fact, to make him get rid of the ball before he is ready to (or put another way, before he feels comfortable doing so)

Other than people not understanding a DE's role in a 3/4, who is misconstruing what the purpose of Rex's pressure package and blitzing? Who is this directed to?

The Cincy game was the first in a while where the QB could feel the heat. The windows for opposing QB's are pretty small. The problem is all the teams that are most likely opponents in the playoffs have QB's that can throw into tight windows. Without pressure the windows the QB's have to throw in are minuscule with respect to Revis and Cro, not so much with the other DB's.

If the Jets, more importantly Rex, can dial up the pressure and as a a result make tighter windows for the other DB's, this defense will be more than ok. That is the hope for next Monday.

It really is amazing how good of a defensive coach Rex is. This Defense does have a couple of glaring holes and a lesser coach would have this D getting chewed up.

This has probably been my only source of frustration with Rex. Damned if I can't figure out at least half the time (1) we're blitzing and (2) which side it's coming from, and I'm a football moron (well, half-wit). But like abyz said, it's all for a reason.

2nd half of the Bengals game looked like our pass rush from Games 1 and 2 of 2009....Palmer was on the ground every play.

Hopefully that carries over this week.

The key thing for me is it forces opposing offenses to keep more guys into block. If you have to keep an extra TE and RB in to block then they have 3 guys out there running routes. With 2 of those guys locked down by Revis and Cro I like our odds.

I'd like to see the Jets draft at least 3 pass rushing DL. Increases your chances of finding good ones.

The problem is that they haven't been putting on much pressure either (except against Cincy). Pressure leads to bad throws and turnovers, there's a reason why the Jets don't get many picks. The Jets are currently ranked #28 in INTs and that's not because we don't have good players in the secondary.

The Jets had 5 interceptions in their first 5 games. They have had 2 since. They went 5 games without an interception. They had two interceptions against Palmer in the only game where they had consistent pressure in quite some time.

3-4 DEFENSIVE LINEMEN'S JOBS are not meant to rush the passer. How long does this team have to have a 3-4 defense before fans realize this?

So you are saying we should draft 4 just in case?

i think the real problem is the lack of pass rush from our cornerbacks

    sacks are overrated anyway

week 2 last yr vs the pats might have been the best pass rushing performance ive ever seen the jets do and they didnt get one sack yet everytime brady took a snap there were at least 2 people there ready to knock him down
