Haters will criticize no matter what. Every draft has complainers and couch gms that think the Jets are idiots. In reality none of us really know which corners are going to stand out or who will end up suffering a fluke injury. You are dissing Paterson because of a SINGLE PRESEASON game. Signing the big name FA isn't always automatically the right thing to do. Chances are if they signed DRC and then he's the one that tears his ACL, you would be complaining about how idiotic the signing was and wondering why we didn't draft another corner. I mean we could have signed Revis back and then probably lose Wilkerson in a year as a result. Would you be happy with that?

And you are trying to read the motivation of posters which only makes your comments that much more erroneous.

I'm not dissing Patterson for one preseason game. As I've said before he was never that good to begin with. He's a journeyman backup with one month of note in the 6 other teams he's played for. There's nothing in his resume that warrants being a starting corner for the 'best' defense in the NFL. If you have actual facts to the contrary (as opposed to incorrect assumptions) please share them.

I agree that I don't think patterson should have been given the starting role in training camp so quickly. He really was never that good. He had a couple easy INTs last year...but it was such a small sample size. He's missed so many games in the past 3 seasons.

That said, he deserves the chance to show what he can do in the next 2 preseason games. I'm not writing him off yet, I just don't think he's proven anything to deserve the starter spot. He should have to rather take it, in my opinion, with great play.

The fact of the matter is that he was brought in to compete for the #2 CB spot. Milliner was already slated to be the #1. The whole big thing with Idzik was to change the amount of money we had locked up in the secondary. You don't need 2 elite corners if your pass rush gets pressure without blitzing. The Jets haven't been the best defense in the NFL since 2009. We were spoiled with Revis & Cromartie, but even with both of them playing together the defense was never as good as it was with just Revis and a decent safety. Milliner+ Pryor can be that and should help make up for decencies elsewhere, plus our pass rush is much better now than it's been in a while.

You're right in the fact that we were spoiled. And you don't need 2 lockdown corners with the D Line. But you do need at least 2 average corners lol. I am not so sure Patterson is that....we will see.

I'm not saying Patterson is or isn't, but he has to prove it.

I agree. The CB position was one of our greatest areas of need but instead of picking up someone who could actually contribute we just picked up a mediocre injury prone guy and drafted a CB nobody even really knew about who missed most of the last year of his college career due to injury. Other positions he did something about: WR he picked up Decker and drafted a few guys, TE he picked up Amaro which I think was a pretty good pick, the pass rush hopefully will be helped by Snacks coming back and the addition of Babin, QB was obviously helped but pickup of Vick to push Geno or if Geno gets hurt to step in and not have to play Simms or some junk like that. But for CB he didn't really do anything despite there being about 4 or 5 really good options in free agency and having a huge pile of cap money available. We still have like $20mil in cap space, among the most in the league, but are going to be starting a potentially injury plagued Milliner, a mediocre at best Patterson (who probalby won't play 16 games) and one of Walls, Lankster or Wilson.

That doesn't look pretty to me. And while it may not be the worst group of CBs in the league most teams don't rely on their CBs as much as we do so we need an above average CB group to have much success. Our run D was great last year and there is zero reason to anticipate it won't be great this year but our pass D was mediocre to just plain bad and it looks like that's going to be the case again this year barring Pryor having a DROY, Pro Bowl type year.

I've been dissing the Patterson signing since we brought him in for a visit ,never thought it was a good move due to his and Millners injury history .You can't have two injury prone starting CBs.But atleast he was cheap!and we didn't overpay!Cloths at Kmart are cheap to that doesn't mean I have to wear them

You just know that Idzik has to be sweating this unfortunate development with both Milliner and McDougle down. It is a double hit to imo the weakest part of the team (after Smith, of course).

I had high hopes over Milliner's strong finish last season. But this injury, even if something that will not keep him from missing regular season games, goes into his history of injuries. It slows down development of the secondary, which already had a huge question mark at #2 cb and a rookie in Pryor. Bottom line is the Jets cannot count on Milliner to be a solid presence holding down a position that at least in Rex Ryan's D calls on the #1 Cb to be able to play the opponent's #1 wideout in man coverage. If Milliner is not that player, then that player is not currently on the Jets' roster.

McDougle was probably a long shot at least in the near term to win the starting job, but his own injury history and his being out all season will put an end to any reasonable optimism he would contribute near term.

Patterson's own injury history is again an issue this camp. Not saying he's destined to miss many games, but he was never that good in the first place.

The decision to not spend FA money on a starting Cb other than Patterson certainly looks more questionable than ever.

Milliner may be "injured" a lot but he has only missed 1 game in the last 3 seasons. McDougle as a 3rd round rookie probably was going to struggle if he played anyway.

Who did you want them to sign that they did not sign?

If they get Milliner back by week 2 which is highly likely, Walls and Milliner with Patterson/Wilson in the slot will be what the lineup was probably going to be even with a healthy McDougle.

no question - on one hand u agree to be somewhat frugal and protect ur cap space and not get taken to the cleaners.....BUT CB is a huge cog in this defense and going into the season with no real veteran presence or established #1 was a huge risk. easy to say now that the injuries are piling up but i was on record in the offseason cricizing the apparent lack of urgency at CB.

Milliner missed a big chunk of camp and pre-season last year with injuries. That led to much of his huge troubles the first three quarters of the season. Yes he played those games, but was obviously held back by the injuries leading to lost time in camp and pre-season. It is significant.

I also have been concerned about lack of attention to Cb by Idzik. And let's not forget Woody's role in hating on Revis, either.

Ftr I am hardly a Cards fan, but I will occasionally wonder how their pass D does this off season with Cro.

Yes, it was a huge risk, and now it has the potential to be a huge drain on the season.

So his struggles had nothing to do with being a rookie at a position that everyone struggles at? He looked lost last season and I dont think being at training camp and participating in a few more 7 on 7s etc. would have taught him to turn around. He needed real game film for that.

Realistically in the offseason the Jets swung and missed on Vontae Davis. They did not want to overpay DRC and they did not want to pay Revis.

You are without a doubt the most negative poster I have encountered here. No matter what happens you spin a way for it to be negative.

Agree, but I also do think a lot of his struggles were magnified due to missing valuable camp time. Yes, being thrown into the fire at the cornerback position is miserable, but losing camp time due to injury surely had some effect.

I think it is necessary to be a homer here to counteract the commentary on the CB position. Milliner and McDougle got hurt. You cannot predict injuries. Who is to say that any other free agent that they brought in would not have gotten injured also?

They swung and missed on Vontae Davis, they did not have real interest in any other player.

I agree but like I said he looked lost, dont think training camp drills would have helped him. And if I remember correctly, I don't think that he missed the entire camp he was still there for a decent chunk. He literally looked lost spinning around like a top and getting beat deep.

A lot of it is because of the position. Corner is one of the hardest, if not the hardest, position to play in the NFL. He was going up against a lot of number one receivers also which didn't help his case.

I think it was a mixture of missing camp and the position he plays, but I agree, I think more of it had to do with the position.

Oh I know that. His responses are so anti-Jets that they seem to be Dolphins, Bills or Patriots fan oriented. The reality is usually somewhere in the middle.

Yes depth was and still is an issue, but you cannot fix every hole in one offseason. Unfortunately injuries have made the problem worse, does not change anything hindsight wise.
