Anyone blaming Idzik is grasping at straws. What if Decker goes down? Is it Idzik's fault that he didnt go hard after a solid enough number 2? Common thing. When injuries happen some fans need to look for a scapegoat.
I don't think they will trade for anyone now that we know Dee will be back in, latest, a month or two. I could totally see them waiting for roster cuts to pick players up and test them out. Rex likes to keep 6 CBs at least...so there's room for a guy like Ras I Dowling or Jeremy Reeves to make it,. Rex likes his guys Lankster, Wilson, and Walls and reminded everyone in the presser how much depth he thinks there is there. He's kinda right. As far as depth...the Jets have good CB depth. They just never had good starters to begin with. In other words...the difference between Dee/Patterson starting is not much compared to Walls/Patterson starting. There was never great starters to begin with...but the dropoff after that is minimal.
what does that have to do with what I said about him being hurt when we drafted him, most uninteresting man in the world?
Idzik should have solved this issue in free agency when there were plenty of options available and tons of cap room. There's no excuses for this ,You can't rely on a guy like Patterson he will be next on the injury list
This is really bad news for the Jets.. Rex needs great cover corners to run his D.. Not saying they are great but they are a lot better than what we currently have.. I think a trade has to happen. I would target the Bengals and try to pry Leon Hall away for a 2nd rounder.. If they dont bite on that ask about Dre Kirkpatrik for a mid round pick.
I dont know. The only reason Rex needed great corners before was because he needed to make up for how poor our front 7 was at rushing the passer. Now that we have a pass rush Rex can adjust. Its not like losing the 2 of them change the game plan at all. Secondary was going to need help regardless. Also I doubt the Bengals trade Hall right before the season starts.
For all this talk about how great our front 7 is we are only in the middle of the pack with regards to sacks. Our best pass rusher is an interior linemen. Unless Barnes comes back to full strength we still lack a speed rusher from the edge. Last year proved that our front 4-7 need at least some resistance in the back end in order to close. Our pass rush is not dominant to the point where we can field an effective pass defense with a bunch of scrubs back there. We are not talking about the kind of pass rush the Giants had back in their 2007 SB run.
Not sure if this has been commented on in this thread yet... The third-round pick out of Maryland was hurt during a 1-on-1 drill with wide receiver Stephen Hill, who jumped over the cornerback to catch a pass. Oh jesus.... thanks Stephen
Well its a young D line and I expect improvement especially with Sheldon's passrushing. Sacks are obviously the ultimate goal of the pass rush but our D line did a good job of collapsing pockets pretty consistently last year which isnt something that happens too often with a 3-4 line. Barnes coming back will be big. I loved what I saw of him early last season. Coples healthy and adjusting too his new role/position should help as well. So while our passrush isnt dominant we did see flashes where it absolutely was which is why I have high hopes for this season. They consistently got to Brady, Brees, and Matt Ryan and are the main reasons we won those games.
The guys fighting for his job. You cant blame Stephen for this. I like to see that hes giving it his all even in practice.
Man, what a sucky day football-wise. A tenuous situation with the secondary to begin with, and now the two best young guys go down on the same day. It's especially bad news about McDougle, with the torn ACL. I really liked the pick back during the draft, because for a 3rd rounder, I thought the risk wasn't too much, considering he only had one football related injury in college. The other was on a scooter or something like that. But now, between the major injury he had last year in college, the small injuries in training camp, and a blown ACL in camp, it's starting to look like McDougle might not have the necessary constitution to play football. Could be just a freak couple of years, but it's hard to count on somebody with that history. Milliner fortunately wasnt hurt too badly, but there is still a trail of injuries with him, hamstring last year, hamstring in training camp this year, now this ankle sprain, and all the stuff he had in college, shoulder etc. Not good news. I think going forward, Idzik has to draft guys with a healthy history, even if the potential is a little lower, because this stuff is just not working out well for us or anyone else, it seems. Unless Reeves or Dixon or Walls really show something, I would not be surprised to see us draft a Cornerback very early next year. I think next year's free agent class is not deep in that position. Strangely, for a guy who considers cornerbacks so important, Rex has a really shitty history of drafting them high, Wilson obviously, Milliner with the slow start and all the health issues, and now McDougle.
