Aponte interviewed with the Chargers last year for the GM job. Shes not "a low level assistant" she was the top contract negotiator for multiple teams. She's just as qualified if not more qualified than some silly scout. The thing about these scouts, they get it wrong and it doesn't matter, they get it right once and they are a genius. That's fickle. A GM needs to be a CEO type. The Jets have failed with scouts. The best GM we've had in 30+ years was Tannenbaum, and he was an "accountant." The lifelong scouts all sucked
and btw NOTHING was more infuriating as a fan than watching our team lose, year after year, and having a folksy jock like Joe Douglas essentially tell US all we are the dumb ones. I'd take an accountant any day over that
Tanny was assistant GM for 5 years. And that would be good for her to do as well before becoming this Czar. Connections are important, but just a part of what needs to be done, and accountant for Parcells is not a huge selling point. At the end of the day you need to make right decisions in many areas. You at least need to be a major part of successful organization for extended period of time before taking this role, with or without scouting background. Her next step is perhaps an assistant GM for a successful organization. Let's not go crazy and hire someone who has not done that, just because she happens to be a woman, and we haven't hired a woman before. Hire on merit.
Where did you get the quote "low level assistant"? You are being very misleading here pretending that you are quoting me, when I never said that. It seems like you picked a candidate based on gender and are trying to justify the selection as opposed to looking at the pool and picking the best candidate overall. Think about what you are saying. She was an accountant for Belichick and Parcells 25 years ago? She negotiated contracts for unsuccessful Browns and Miami teams 10 years ago? She had an interview with the Chargers, who then hired director of personnel in a successful Baltimore organization? Come on. If you do not like scouting background, fine, then there are better choices there too. For example, how can you compare her candidacy to someone like Alec Halaby, who was a right hand of Roseman for over a decade and is an assistant GM to him right now learning first hand from one of the best day in and day out?
Idk much about Halaby and I suspect you dont really either. But we hired Howie Roseman's assistant last time and it was a disaster so I'm skeptical. Maybe Roseman's assistants just bring him coffee or something. Sorry for misquoting you
We don't know intimate details of any candidates, which is why you hire someone like Spielman, but at least we do know higher level detail, from which it is possible to make some sort of conclusion. As far a JD, just because he failed doesn't mean you stop picking from successful organization. One red flag I noted before about him is that he had a very rapid climb and held senior level positions for only a very short time - 4 years in total. In Baltimore he was a scout, not a high ranked guy. He wasn't really Ozzie's right hand man working closely with him or anything like that. His first senior level job was with Chicago where he was a director of College scouting for one year 2015. Then only 3 years in Philly under Roseman, then GM of the Jets. If anything he was just not yet ready for GM role and needed more seasoning, not less. Alec Halaby in contrast had sr level role for 12 years: special assistant to GM (2012-2015), VP of operations (1016-2021), Assistant GM (2022-2024). So, if you do not want scout, I think this is someone I would definitely look at. Just because JD failed after only 3 years with Roseman with 1 year sr experience before doesn't mean we should stop looking at successful organizations, and at someone with 12 years of senior experience with a great GM.
People considered Joe Douglas a unrealistic hire for the Jets and he bombed the job and he just tried to light the house on fire on his way out the door. Does anyone anywhere think that the right hand of Howie Roseman is a realistic suggestion for the Jets? I don't.
Sometimes when your organization has become what amounts to a burning bag of dogshit waiting for someone to stomp on it, you have to start thinking outside the box for options that can move you forward at all. I think most of the suggestions that people are making are just not possible with the state of the team right now.
Yes this is the time for an outside the box hire. Traditional candidates like assistants for "good" organizations have come here and failed. When it comes to analytics and assistants, you think about the Eagles, they are big believers in analytics, they probably have an entire legion of data nerds that their front office has benefitted from. Expecting an assistant from there to come here and replicate that is unreasonable, IMO. The Jets' analytics dept is probably an IT guy from Montclair State and a couple analysts focusing on sales and marketing....
Plus it probably wouldn't hurt to have a money person in charge during a period where they will be dealing with the aftermath of the albatross contracts of Lord Aaron and his Golden Posse.
I hope the Jets get a GM and HC that respect analytics when evaluating talent. That's a big part of the modern NFL and I don't think JD or Saleh used that tool.
Yeah, they are trying to figure out which players will increase ticket sales, accessory sales and gambling revenue.
Not saying it’s all worked out in sunshine and rainbows for the Browns but they hired Paul DePodesta in 2016 who was a career baseball guy to be their Chief Strategy Officer. They bottomed out, traded down from taking Wentz, hired a good coach and loaded up on draft picks and rebuilt the franchise pretty well. 2 playoff appearances in 26 years before he got there. 2 in 8 still isn’t great since he got there but still better than nothing. Too bad the owner crashed and burned all his work with the Watson trade.
Not all have failed. Parcells didn't. Tanny had a lot of success also. I just don't get the point of not trying to get people from successful organizations and instead focusing on gender as the selection criteria without proof of success at senior level positions elsewhere. If anything JD failed because he wasn't enough with successful organizations at a senior level role. He was too junior for GM job and should have marinated more as VP - he wasn't Assistant GM yet when we hired him. Why not though? We are talking about opportunity to lead all football operations of 1 of 32 franchises and generational wealth with a single contract. I just don't know if it is or is not realistic, but I would not rule it out.
Sure, but my understanding is that they're also going to recommend who to hire from that list of candidates. Hopefully Woody listens.
Our GMs didn't fail because they were scouts, they failed because they were bad scouts. Mac had no regard for positional value and JD couldn't pick a starter past round 1 to save his life.
