If his value will never be higher than it is this offseason - which I agree with - then why should we try lock him down this off season? I think if they decide they want to keep him they should reap the benefits of that value. Let him play another year on his rookie deal and franchise him next year if need be.
Good point, and you may be right. From the cap perspective, however, given the fact that we literally have to spend a good amount of money, it may be worth to lock him down today and front load his contract so he is paid and happy and we begin spending what we need. I wouldn't overpay him today, but utilizing our cap to front load his deal is a smart move IMO. Plus, investing our money in our own players rather than (or in addition to) throwing lots of money at FAs is a good move to show the rest of the team what Mac and Bowles are all about.
They definitely need to figure it out this year. Negotiating with Wilkerson when the franchise tag is the fall back will be useless from the Jets point of view.
How did a Miami Suh thread get turned into a Wilkerson debate? Anyways, Suh going to Miami would be enjoyable. They are not a threat to win the division due to their coaching staff and Suh would make brady's life a living hell as others have posted. Here's to hoping the fish mortgage the next 3 years on one player.
Despite generally having a poor interior OL Suh has never done much damage to NE, and Detroit's DL has been better than Miami's IMO. Miami has done more damage to NE with their DL having lesser players so I don't think Suh makes a big difference, especially if they are sacrificing other interior rushers like Odrick to sign him.

????? Suh has played NE twice in his entire career. Kind of hard to do much damage if he never plays them. Hopefully Miami stupidly uses your logic and avoids him. For 2 reasons: 1) I don't want my Jets to have to face Suh twice a year and 2) I hope a division rival sacrifices good players & decisions by thinking about NE too much.

I wonder if Suh is getting this type of contract because he's a great player..or if he's getting it because players like him just dont become available so it drives the price up. Now contract doesnt tell everything but if he gets a bigger contract than Watt its a joke. Its why when people say "Are we gonna have to pay Wilk, Watt-like money?" its hilarious to me..Wilk isnt getting anywhere near this type of deal. Suh shouldnt either. Would be smarter than the Bills giving Mario Williams 100 mil but its not a smart move either.
That's a lot of money. Suh is an incredible football player though. That's also just his starting point- a negotiation ploy that you counter offer. A team could probably land him with a massive contract but a team friendly 'out' after year 2 or 3 to protect themselves. Then it's not so bad. If he's a beast after year 3 and you want to keep him, then the biggest part of the contract is almost over and you have an animal, which by that point in the future might playing in a 'bargain' deal in comparison. Idk- I see both the pros and cons. One thing though is that Suh isn't an Albert Haynesworth type. Suh eats, drinks and pisses football. I respect that. I'd give money to a guy like him who isn't injury prone and has a strong football desire.

How are they far away from contention? They got knocked out of the playoffs in week 16. If Suh elevates that defense, who knows what Miami could be. They are closer to contending than we are. _
Just heard on Francesser that the Lions are thinking of maybe trying to resign him..lol. Raiders supposedly willing to pay anything to get Suh.
Miami is a talented team, they aren't far away but would they be able to upgrade OL and weapons for the underachieving QB? he couldn't get it done when he had a ton of weapons and they have done nothing but get rid of guys so far and Wallace may be gone next.
If the Raiders sign Suh and draft White or Cooper for Carr and add a TE and a RB to replace MJD, that team is setting itself up for a nice little stretch. _
If Carr develops Oak is going to be very dangerous in the coming years, that team has a lot of young talent and a ton of cap space.
