Joey Votto's splits are virtually identical against lefthanded and righthanded pitching, with an .800+ OPS against both. Walking him whether it was a righty or a lefty pitching makes perfect sense, since he's a far better hitter than the next two that will come up. At that point David Ross is the hitter, whose OPS is 50 points higher against lefthanded pitching, so you don't want Schoeneweis there. Having Heilman in there makes perfect sense - he should be able to get him out, but he didn't. At that point you can bring in Schoeneweis or Sanchez, and I've shown that there are plenty of arguments either way. Put that all together, and you hardly have managerial decisions that are "the worst possible move a manager can make". Every one is easily defensible - you just had pitchers twice not getting hitters out that they should. When the implications of the decisions are that subtle, it's ridiculous to excoriate the manager over the moves he chose. Speaking of pitchers not getting people out that he should, here is Wagner.
I would take Sanchez vs Valentin over Show vs Valentin any day of the week.. I know Valentin is much better as a lefty batter, but I just had no confidence in Show there.. That said, great win, that was amazing.
Good pitching trumps good hitting. I'll take a pitcher that is good at getting a type out over a pitcher that is lousy at getting a type out and is just in there because the batter struggles against his type.
johan obviously was not johan tonight, but this team showed heart, and the bats came alive. delgado is hitting 400 and tatis is hitting 400 during this streak. keep it up metties, not METSIES, metsies is gay, i dont care what keith says
Yes he was. He gave up 2 home runs, a double and triple almost back-to-back-to-back-to-back. It shall be peaks and valleys with him for the long haul I'm sure but hopefully his peaks happen at the right time.
i still belive johan is gonna settle down this season. as far as delgado's hr, what a bomb, his last two hr's have been bombs. nice to see him swing the bat like he's capable of doing
I followed this game from my phone as I waited on line for The Dark Knight (we got there way too early, I don't want to talk about it), and I was happy to see how it turned out...Delgado was awesome and Wagner shut 'em out. Hopefully Santana gets his act together though.
And now it's 4-2 after a bloop single. Maine is simply incapable of putting people away when he has to.
