What does it matter if there was a market for him or not? He was the team's starting RFer next year. If there's no market for him you don't trade him. Omar has had a very checkered trading past both with the Expos and the Mets. As far as Estrada goes I don't think anyone knows what's going on with him. When the trade was made we assumed he was going to be the catcher but then the talks of the Mets releasing him came through and now this deal, so it's pretty likely he's not going to be on the team.
I agree, for now... I'm 99% sure Church will be spun in a package for a starter. I mean the Twins were looking at Crisp and Melky, Church is about equal to those guys, maybe they just didn't want Milledge or Gomez. I also read on Metsblog that the Orioles turned down a Bedard trade that included Gomez, maybe they wanted a more proven guy like Church. It's the only possible explanation right now... And seriously, Schneider can't hit at all, if they wanted someone who could hit .235 and play great D they could've signed freakin Henry Blanco or someone. It's the only logical thing I could think of...Milledge HAS to have more value than this.
They pretty much did it to get rid of Mota's contract and they pretty much planned to nontender Estrada the whole time I guess.
Well if they do get Bedard it's worth it... but God damn it if I was the O's I wouldn't take a Church/Pelfrey or Church/Mulvey package for Bedard. Manaya better make something go down quick before Mets Nation erupts on him.
The Brewers wanted to get rid of Estrada just as badly as the Mets wanted to get rid of Mota, so I guess another team wouldn't have taken on Mota's contract without getting rid of a bad contract of their own. Also, it gave Minaya a backup plan if he couldn't acquire another catcher.
Isn't Church arbitration eligible in a year? he certainly won't fit in any package the Twins may want.
I swear, I pray that this is the case. Metsblog was saying our offer was Gomez, Heilman, and Humber for Bedard. Is it possible that they wanted Church, Heilman, Humber/Pelfrey instead? I can only hope. Knowing Jim Duquette all too well, I could see him wanting experience over talent. Still, I feel like we could've at least gotten a lower-level guy with some talent for Milledge along with this package. Very disappointing. My already shaken faith in this FO is starting to crumble. To think, just a little over a year ago the Mets were the best team in the NL and poised to make a WS run while the Jets were surprisingly good. How shit changes in a year *sigh*.
Actually, I don't quite understand the Brewers' thinking. They could have non-tendered Estrada and got rid of his contract and him, just like we are going to do. Instead, they trade him, which would make sense if it weren't for Mota and his ridiculous contract. I guess they see something in Mota. From the Mets standpoint, it made great sense. Brewers? Not so much. As far as Milledge for Church and Schneider... Just fucking terrible.
Church could turn out to be a good player. He was always just on an extremely terrible team in Washington.
I had a L-Millz jersey in my hand a few months back...glad i got cold feet and didnt buy it. This sucks. My favorite player always gets traded.
I believe Duquette was fired or quit. Oh, and Church is no Melky Cabrera/Coco Crisp. Both of those guys are good outfielders and neither one struck out once almost every 4 at bats.
I have this guy on the radio. What a jackass. Church is going to give us similar offense to Sean Green. There's no upgrade, and there's no upside, not to mention you've got a catcher who's coming off a .230 season. I would not be surprised if the Brian Schneider hits like Mike DiFelice this year. -X-
I agree, I'm pretty sure Difelice could hit .235. Why the hell didn't he just trade a lower-level guy for Schneider if he wanted him so bad and then signed Jose Guillen or Fukudome or Rowand for right and kept Milledge if he didn't feel he was ready to be a starter?
