who is complaining? this is a thread about who we would prefer to win, and I explained who I preferred and why. that's not a complaint, it's an explanation. yes, they have under achieved for the past decade, and watching teams beat them that on paper it didn't look like should is just as exciting as seeing it occur again in this World Series against a team that has fielded a comparable team with far more constraints against them.
That's why it'll be a bigger achievement if the Phillies win the WS and ho-hum, relatively speaking, if the Yankees win.
A model franchise? So every team should have a 208 million dollar payroll? THATS what makes a good team, the ability to buy who ever the fuck you want.
This is a no brainer. Phillies. You have to admit, the phillies are a respectable team. Guys like victorino, moyer, werth, etc are all solid players. The whole franchise is just a good solid team as much as i hate to admit it. Even howard picked up his fielding skills this year so its a little harder to bash him. Dont get me wrong, fuck the phillies and their shit ass city, but I find it funny how yankee fans say the mets are a joke, but I find the yankees to be more of a joke to me. A team with their kind of payroll should make the world series every fucking year. If they dont its a joke. Dont give me shit about how the mets are the 2nd highest, whoever the 2nd highest payroll is each year, whether it be the cubs, mets, red sox, etc. the yankees are always light years ahead of them. Are you seriously telling me that the merit of a team is based off how much money the owner can throw at players, theyre a fucking monopoly. Its extremely annoying that baseball does not have a salary cap but thats a whole nother issue. The yankees are a big part of whats wrong with the sport and thats the whole salary cap issue itself. Are you really going to flaunt winning a world series this year? CONGRATS, tampa bay made it to the ws last year with A QUARTER of the payroll the yankees have. Meanwhile, the yankees are gonna pick off joe mauer and grienke from teams like minessota and kc that cant afford to keep anybody. If you ask me its a major fucking problem with the game, and the fact that yankee fans relish in the fact that they can buy whoever they want whenever they want epitomizes their fans. To me, the yankee franchise is a joke and a despicable one at that. At least the phillies are a baseball team not a monopoly. One last point is the proof of this all, is joe fucking girardi made the world series as a manager, thats when you know something is wrong with the game.
that is yet another reason, i wouldnt mind completely doing away with the AL entirely. watered down baseball.
honestly, i try to stay above it all, but i sincerely believe its a problem in baseball that they dont have a salary cap, and that a team is allowed to do things like this. Even modest yankee fans i talk to admit its their payroll is a bit silly, but they still dont mind. Well, if your not a yankee fan, youd mind.
baseball doesn't need a salary cap to keep the Yankees from winning, they haven't won in almost a decade now, so spending isn't a guarantee. a salary cap is needed to help smaller clubs be competitive at least.
It's true the Yankees have a big payroll, but a large chunk of it is from re-signing their own guys (Posada, Jeter and Rivera all have huge contracts and they weren't signed as free agents). And I understand the Mets spend less than the Yankees but it's not like the Mets are a small market team that has extremely limited resources.
Ok, the first statement doesnt really begin to justify what they do in my opinion, and yes, I stated i completely understand that the mets are up there, but the fact is, you can compare 29 teams. There are 29 teams and their respective payrolls, and then....the yankees. Light years away from every other team. All bias aside, can you really try and justify this and say it is healthy for the game of baseball? Im not even just trying to bash the yankees here, i got my hate out earlier, now im just trying to present an argument. One last metaphor for you, the yankees are the guy at work or in the family, who, at christmas time, buys the 100 dollar secret santa gift when there was a 20 dollar limit. (what made me think of this was the episode of the office when steve corell buys an ipod and everyone else bought mittens and shit) not only that but then he brags about how he bought the best gift and actually thinks he did the best job out of all the people.
Not having a salary cap is not healthy for baseball, but the Yankees aren't the only team that benefits from this. Do they benefit more than other teams? Probably, but they're not the only team that takes advantage of not having a cap. And I don't understand the correlation to the Secret Santa episode, there was a limit in place that Michael knowingly exceeds. There's no limit, and the Yankees have more resources than other teams. Instead of pocketing the extra revenue, they re-invest it in the team. There are haves and have nots, it's just the way of life. I just don't see the point in complaining about the lack of a cap at this point. There will never be a cap in baseball and there hasn't been one in a while. It's a pointless conversation.
ok, think of it as the rich uncle who knows hell buy something that nobody else can afford because they are not nearly as affluent as him but he does it anyway. and about the cap, unfortunately you are right, and i think its a shame, fortunately, its only a game though. I just think it could be a better game if it had a cap.
I have yet to read a coherent metaphor about the Yankees on this board. Each one is worse than the last. You make more money, you get to spend more money. That's it.
so what does that make you, the little bitch cousin that cries when his shitty toy breaks that his cheap uncle bought him?
 HAH, not so funny, i was just trying to illustrate a point, wasnt trying to be a wiseass. BUT, I think you might be buying what im saying a little bit, i think im starting to sense that a bit.
Baseball to me is just like a story I know called "The Puppy Who Lost His Way." The world was changing, and the puppy was getting... bigger. [Later] So, you see, the puppy was like baseball. In that, they were both lost in the woods. And nobody, especially the little boy - "the Yankees" - knew where to find 'em. Except that the puppy was a dog. But baseball, my friends, that was a revolution.
What's funny about all the whining about the Yankees and a salary cap is that they wouldn't even be the team opposing the institution of a cap the strongest. If we were to use the NHL as a guide (being the last major sport to institute a cap) there would probably be a period where teams could buy out contracts consequence free to comply with it. Considering that there's no way that the salary cap would start much lower than the luxury tax is now (around $160 million right now), the institution of a salary cap would basically be giving the Yanks an easy opportunity to get out of some of their bad contracts. The teams that would really fight a cap tooth and nail are the Marlins or the Pirates, who are too cheap to want to spend to a cap floor while they make so much money off of revenue sharing and the luxury tax. There's a reason that nobody's seriously pushed for a cap in all the CBA negotiations that baseball's gone through in the last few decades. Having teams like the Yankees and Mets around to demonize for their spending allows the cheaper small market teams to avoid having to spend anything themselves.
