http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/01/31/santana.negotiations/index.html Sounds like almost a guarantee to get done. Mets just need to give him what he wants, they have no choice. It's still a great deal for the Mets, but if the Yankees had to give up a package centered around Hughes + 7/$170M, I'd of cried myself to sleep.
Completely understandable, just as I will laugh my ass of when Hughes doesn't come close to reaching his potential and Santana is leading the Mets to multiple WS appearances.
While Yankee fans may think so they don't. Once again you guys are going all on potential, Hughes, Kennedy or Joba have not gone a full season. It's easy to say they are gonna be great based on what they did last year but guys break down, guys don't live up to potential and guys get hurt. I'm not saying they are gonna be terrible but you just don't know. Throw in the fact that the Mets play in a very weak NL while the Yankees play in a League that has about 7 teams Boston, NY, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, Seattle and Anaheim that could make the playoffs. In the NL the Mets need to worry about who? The Brewers? Granted there are some good teams like the Phillies and the Dbacks but the Mets on paper are better than every team in the NL while the Yankees aren't even the best in thier division.
Mets, Santana Close To Agreement On Six-Year Deal http://www.hotfootblog.com/2008/02/01/mets-santana-close-to-agreement-on-six-year-deal/
I really don't feel like arguing this point over and over. On the one hand, you're telling us that we shouldn't count on Hughes or Chamberlain because all we have is potential to base our opinions on. On the other hand, you're saying the Mets don't need to worry about any other NL team because they are better on paper than all other NL teams. Every sport, from year to year, is simply a matter of speculation, and luck riding over talent. If talented guys stay healthy, they'll succeed more often than not. If we're going to sit and wonder about injuries all day long, we'll never evaluate players. Santana could blow his groin on Opening Day. Then what? Where would that leave the Mets? What are you going to do if Santana's declining numbers last year were actually a sign of things to come? I don't see Mets fans even considering that a possibility, which it is. All this on top of the fact that most Yankees fans I know are anticipating a down year this year, on the way to a bright future. It's Mets fans that are assuming we all think we're going to beat everyone this year.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3225433 I'd love to have Lofton. 25 SB, .300 avg last year. That beats having Pagan.
Lofton would be a good signing. He can definitely still play in a limited role. I wish his stay with NYY would have been better, but that's what happens when you have Torre and his boyfriend Bernie.
I'd prefer to make a trade for Nady. He gives you the platoon for RF against the lefties and he also gives you a solid fall back option if Delgado would ever go down long-term. Delgado misses time every year, so this would be the better route to go in my opinion.
Wow, this is getting close. A half hour away, and I haven't seen anything that says they're very close yet. Yikes.
