I don't think anything else noteworthy is coming out this year so here's a list of my favorite metal releases of 2008: Antithesis - Origin Zero Order Phase - Jeff Loomis Watershed - Opeth Southern Storm - Krisiun angL - Ihsahn Diminishing Between Worlds - Decrepit Birth I haven't checked out Arghoslent's Hornets of the Pogrom yet but it would probably make it up there.
I didnt hear the new Origin...how is it? I keep hearing good things about decrepit birth...i listened to them acouple years ago and they sounded like typical california brutal death to me...but everyone keeps saying they have a real "classic" morbid angel-esque sound....am i missing something?
I really liked the new Origin. I think it's their best album yet. Decrepit Birth's first and second albums are a world apart. First one is typical Cali brutal death, second one is much more well written, more technical, and catchier. I wouldn't compare them to Morbid Angel at all though. They're a lot more like Death.
I've been out of the loop for a while, but I think my favorite album of this past year was the new Hour of Penance. Antithesis came in a close second. I also got the Behemoth EP a few days ago. The remade Chant is totally sick. That band can do no wrong. I wanna check out the new Severed Savior, I think it released recently (or is due to very soon). Also interested in the new Vile.
So what's everyone looking forward to in 2009? I'm most excited about Napalm Death, Morbid Angel and Megadeth.
Have Megadeth got a new album coming out Badge? Speaking of Megadeth, heard a horrific black metal cover of Hanger 18 at my mates gig last week, one of the supporting bands. Fuckin shocking.
It actually took me until the end of this post (2 years worth) to see a band i actually recognized. I guess i'm getting older, but metal to me was always Metallica / Megadeth. Actually i was like 11 or something when Quiet Riot was the beginning of "metal". Megadeth was actually the last concert i went to. I think they were promoting the Risk album. Wow that was a long time ago. My favorite was alwasy Youthansia.
Morbid angel should be awesome. Theyve been playing a new unreleased song on european tours...which is posted on youtube..and it sounds like some of the best new death metal ive heard in awhile. I'm curious to see what origin does next..and for those into the classic 80's stuff, Ratt has a new album due out in the summer. Should be interesting
Trey said in an interview that he's been listening to a lot of electronic music (good stuff, not club music) so I'm interested in the direction they'll go on this album. I think I can hear the influence a little bit at the beginning of Nevermore.
Listen to this retard: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news...i_think_were_going_to_overtake_metallica.html My favorite comments: "Big words from a guy who hits garbage cans for a living." "This is like a fresh dog shit saying it is better then a pile of old white dog shit."
Can someone please give me a somewhat objective take on the last Machine Head album? Some reviews make it sounds like it is as good as Master of Puppets and others make it sound as if it is just OK.
I listened to it, it's boring. The songs are too long and they didn't come up with enough good ideas to fill all that time.
I know I'm really late to the party, but I finally discovered Dream Theater over the past week or so. Mike Portnoy is a fucking beast with the drums. They give some pretty enjoyable covers too, although their singer can be kind of annoying in a few songs (especially their earlier ones). On that note, I'm looking forward to see what they have to offer in 2009. I also wouldn't be surprised if Maiden goes back to the studio as it's been 3 years now since A Matter of Life and Death was released.
