Jarvis Jones has 3 down linebacker talent. Jones while he isn't a finished project has been far more productive than any of the OLBs in this draft class. He's a terror of the edge and he's got a never-die attitude. Watch the tape, don't judge him by the 40 time and combine / pro-day. This man has game-speed. Does Mingo have that attitude? I doubt it. The fact that he's never picked up a weight in his life tells me something about his work ethic and his own self-desire to want to get better. Mingo has never played OLB in his college career, he's going to learn a completely new position. He's a project that should be drafted outside of the first round. We don't have to draft an OLB with our 9th pick. Warmack could still be on the board. Cordarrelle Patterson will be on the board, we can trade down which I would like the most. We have options. Mingo with 9 isn't one of them. No project players with the 9th pick.
Everybody should go read the analysis of Mingo on NFL.com in their draft section. They rave about him and give him a high rating but the sentence that stands out to me is "boom or bust prospect". Then go read the same site on Gholston.
Did the great Me Kiper just say he doesnt think were in total rebuild mode??? Nice to see someone join me on the darkside of the moon
Fabian Washington. That trade was an excellent trade. We moved back about 20 spots, picke dup a vet TE and extra picks- one of which I believe we used to acquire Kerry Rhodes in another deal. we went in targeting Mike Nugent and Justin Miller, there were rumblings we'd take either w/ our 1st pick. We moved back and still got them so the trade itself was excellent, the decisions to have those guys so high up on their draft boards was not.
Maybe this is why I end up in so many arguments come TC time. This notion of players being "Projects" & trying to avoid them. If you are picking outside of the top 5..odds are the player is going to be a project. Every single prospect has a learning curve. If they don't, they either don't have much ceiling or they're going top 5 as they are instant impact types(extremely rare). Furthermore you don't draft a player solely on what he brings to the table today but more importantly 2-3 years from now. Yes, early projection is important..but that's not a wise way to make your draft picks or build a roster. Long term develop projection is the single most important AND hardest thing to quantify. I love how any time Mingo is mentioned..people immediately fall into this Jones love fest. Why are the Jets only deciding these 2 players? More importantly why are all of Mingo red flags so concerning yet Jones who has MULTIPLE red flags is completely immune to all of them? Are you all really falling into the trap of looking solely at college production? Let's be fair. Jones has size(6'2 245 may not cut it as OLB in a 3-4)health AND Triangle based red flags. That's not to say I don't like him as a prospect...but surely there must be SOME level of concern? Frankly the SAME level of concern everybody seems to have about Mingo who has superior size, triangle numbers, health & first step.
The level of concern with Mingo is based on fundamentals and production. Alongside those you have potential, which would be a great equalizer if you had a very good roster and were looking to add a player who could either contribute or develop into a contributor down the road. The Jets roster doesn't have room for potential unmatched by fundamentals and production at this point. We have too many Vlad Ducasses, Stephen Hills and Joe McKnights as it is.
Except for the fact that he doesn't have the fundamentals or production that you would expect out of a high round WR coming out of college. Potential he has tons of. He looked really good in skivvies at the combine because that's what happens when you put a former track star in a track and field event designed to figure out whether football players have the athleticism to compete at the next level. What the combine doesn't tell you is whether the guy can play football at a high level or not. It's supposed to fill in the blanks that you can't easily determine by looking at film of the guy actually playing. It's crazy that the combine doesn't have people working out in full pads also.
When you draft someone in the top 10, they need to bring something to the table right away. Also, they need to show they the potential to be a difference-maker 2 or 3 years down the line. Mingo is far too inconsistent, we need someone that bring impact on the Jets right away with our 9th pick. Mingo down the line with the right coaching sure, he could be an impact player. His lack of strength and willingness to get better makes him a question-mark in my opinion. He's a boom or bust player, and I think we've drafted enough of those guys in the past few years. If we traded down and got several picks, then sure Mingo wouldn't be a bad prospect to draft. Jarvis Jones has proved to be productive everywhere he goes. Doctors have already said he's healthy, and his body of work to me is impressive. Take a look at the SEC Title game, Jones was the only one making plays on that Georgia squad, while everyone else was getting dominated by the Alabama offensive line. Jones has the ability to learn more pass-rushing moves and become a nightmare on the defensive end. That said, Jones is one of the prospects I would draft. I myself like the idea of drafting Warmack to solidify the offensive line. In the end, I think trading down might be the best scenario for the Jets as there are a lot of play-makers late in round 1, and in rounds 2 and 3. Grabbing an extra 2nd would be pretty clutch. The idea of the Jets deciding between two players is not true not in my book. If you trade down, grab an extra 2nd and pick Mingo at the end of the first round then by all means go ahead and do it. I want an impact player on all 3 downs, not a player that comes in on 3rd down for the first year or 2. He provides too much risk at this stage to draft him at 9.
IMO, the jury on mcKnight is still out. I would like to see him used more as a RB, and he certainly has had impressive moments as a return guy.
There must be a reason McKnight doesn't see the field because he shows glimspes. Out of shape, fumbles in practice, constantly injured...probably all of the above.
his issue is he always fumbles. He can be a dynamic return man but if he is losing multiple fumbles a year that negates all the good he has done.
Lets not forget that we may be getting more picks in the first round, If this does happen and a trade is made with Tampa, then a lot of what was said in his article would be a mute point. Yet I do agree there is no where to go but up and the idea of getting younger and faster and not going crazy in FA is a huge plus and something JET fans have not seen in a long time. Just a few weeks away to all these questions get answered.
