Becton will need to come back as LG imo. He’s just too big and out of shape to play the tackle position. His career is riding on getting in shape.
Right now the Becton pick is looking questionable--he was and is a boom or bust prospect. So far-- 1. He's been consistently injured 2. Hasn't been the best with the media 3. Has struggled with conditioning and upkeeping his body to a pro level 4. Doesn't fit our new system 5. Has struggled in pass pro Becton, Mims, Davis, Zuniga so far is looking pretty rough for Joe D....let's see
I didn’t know much about Becton in college, but did he have a history of injuries? AVT played tackle at USC, would a change from in to out work for them? He looked like a road grader guard when I first saw becton.
Yeah, that’s why I’m wondering if him switching back to tackle would be a better fit and becton at guard. I didn’t see how good AVT was in college... I was not watching my ball last season.
I'm willing to give Mims and Davis some time. I had reservations about Becton from the beginning for all of the above reasons. If he could drop about 30 lbs, he'd be an excellent LT, but I think he's just too slow at his weight to stop a fast edge rusher.
I disagree. He has not been consistently injured. That's ridiculous. He started 14 games last year, missing 2. He had the chest injury last year, the foot issue during OTAs, and now the knee. He was not a boom or bust prospect. Again, that's just ridiculous! He has not struggled with conditioning. The only thing I agree with is that he has struggled in pass pro during TC and today. He had a bad game or two last year, but otherwise, was good in pass protection. He may not fit our new system. He wasn't drafted for this system, and it may have been a poor decision by Saleh to change the blocking scheme, when Becton was the best OL we had. Mims is not looking rough, either. He produced last season when he had a QB who could see him and hit him. He produced today in his only opportunity. He produced in preseason when given a chance. I fault LaFleur for this. If I don't see marked improvement from LaFleur in play calling and decision making, I'd ship his ass out before I did Mims. They knew Davis was raw. He was forced onto the field last season and showed flashes. I believe that he will be fine.
he will always be injured (the roll up today is bad luck) and slow. He’s a RT at most really disappointed in this line, especially in the 1st half. Zach is legit though. They need to protect him and the running game was trash too. if we keep this up….get used to seeing some mike white
This is ridiculous. Becton is tremendously strong. That has been spoken of many times. He certainly didn't look it today, but he is strong.
I mentioned last year that the concerns about Becton were the same as with Zion Williamson. BIG men, who are quick and agile for their size. But, can their bodies sustain the weight and still perform at a high level? Those who can are few and far between - the human skeletal system, ligaments, etc., just aren't designed to support that kind of activity at that size.
AVT was fine at USC at LT, but imo wouldn't be fine at LT in the NFL for any length of time. He didn't even look good at LG today.
I'm curious to see a statistical breakdown of the offense before and after the injury. Becton/Fant vs. Fant/Moses. Anyone?
