half of me says don't give up on him , 1st round pick and all. the other half says hell no, can't stay healthy . what to do ???
Let him try to prove himself for one season. If he does, he'll probably bag us a real nice comp pick.
I still stand by my original claim: they should've given him the option. $13 million gamble would've been worth it IMO
Let's face it - Mekhi is a "multi-push" player. He's our guy, but It will always be a struggle. Given what I can observe, he needs us more than we need him. But, we need him.
Becton would have to have a monster season to warrant the franchise tag for top 5 OT money. Would be great for the team if he does tho. The 5th year option was never going to happen. You don’t guarantee an extra year against injury, for a player injured the vast majority of the time, with lingering questions about the knee. He has reason to be motivated and hungry now. And nothing more dangerous than a hungry Becton The Jets handled this right all things considered. Now let the season unfold.
If he plays well he should be looking at a contract, and he would be signing that contract a year younger than he otherwise would be if we picked up his 5th year.
Well said. This is his contract year. Of course he is going to play his ass off. After getting that huge contract from Jets or whoever, will he have the same motivation? I doubt it. Though he is talking about his newborn and how it changed his perspective in life. That might be true, who knows.
Who knows…but I’ll believe it when I see it I’ll grant that its very subjective and I don’t know the guy…but just from what I’ve seen I don’t get the feel that he is one of those guys who is self motivated and will run through walls to stay on the field. I think not exercising his option was absolutely the only call to make. And IF he stays healthy this year and balls out (which I do think he can be very good if he stays on the field), then I’d consider a longer term deal but I’d really be hesitant to give him a huge cushy deal given his injury history and such. Smells like Mo Wilkerson to me…
Brook! I think you have misjudged Becton. A year ago, you may have been right, but not any longer. He isn't Mo Wilkinson. Becton wants to be a great player. The newborn has just strengthened his determination.
If I am wrong about Becton, I will own it, and gladly wear the egg mask for the rest of my life. I would rather be wrong 100% of the time if it means the Jets winning.
