Due to his large contract Schefter thinks Miles Austin will be cut. He played at Monmouth and is a local who has been hurt recently. Maybe somebody who could be signed to a reasonable contract and play at home.
For a reasonable price? Sure. He's still relatively young, has good size, and can get open. The downside is he gets hurt a lot. I'd take him as "the other guy" after they bring in another more dependable receiver.
Why exactly should Salas get a shot? The whole WR core needs to be blown up besides Kerley.Enough of these mediocre practice squad type players. And I don't trust Nelson at all.Id keep Nelson as the number 5 or 6 reciver
i love these pick ups if we can land Ebron in the draft too... that would be awesome talent around geno! plus a later round WR or two ... I like that alot.. kinda wish we could just keep santonio for a way smaller contract and move him to his natural #2 spot where he has had his only success (here and pittsburgh).
hes a camp body, competition bait and all that. sure we could probably do better on paper but why not let things play out to make sure? he'll probably need to be a punt/kick returner to make it but still, he's not horrible, he's on contract at under 700k and theres no reason NOT to see what he has after a full offseason in comparison to other fringe players. The WR corp needs an overhaul but not all will be superstars regardless, we might carry 6 WR's and those "got something to prove" type players are great for that, having a Nelson or a Salas to round out the cast is just fine.
If Miles Austin is in fact a cap casualty I'd sign him in a heartbeat. Austin & Nicks, make it happen!
I agree. He knows the system, isn't awful and plays STs. If he gets beat out, fine. The Jets can't turn over 2/3 of their roster. As it is, they may be replacing 40% of the roster. Some guys are going to have to be kept this year that aren't ideal, but the Jets can't upgrade every spot in one offseason.
Nah. At this point I don't even think Austin is any better than Nelson. Maclin should be our prime target.
Thank you for this bit of realism. The fact is the Jets at least at certain positions will have to accept using hold the fort guys for the upcoming season. Having accepted this does not mean, of course, that you can't still upgrade SOME of the team, and no doubt they will try to do so. Where these efforts should be focused is an intense subject of debate, and we all have our opinions on that. But the reality is that some less than optimal players will be back next year. The good news about the Jets having so many needs is they can afford to see what good players get cut for cap reasons from other teams. Regardless, more or less, where they play. So when someone, imo typically Smith defenders for example, say the Jets MUST upgrade the OL, the reality is it is unlikely we will see a major revamping of the OL. At most you might see two starters change hands, and my own prediction is that unless Colon does not come back, the starters there may be the same as last year. And if Cro can be brought back the CB's will likely be the same. The Jets have to gamble that Milliner will continue to improve. Safety is a position that I do think they will make a move on, but it likely will be only one big one, despite the poor overall play there this past season. And DL of course I think everyone thinks is solid and can be left alone. This still leaves many needs to be filled, and even then not all of them will be.
nicks is a yes. wouldnt mind him. austin if he came super cheap. hes a project at this point. too many injuries and almost no production the last season or 2.
Salas still has the potential to turn into a solid contributer ... i don't understand the desire to kick him to the curb PRE-TRAINING CAMP. Austin is pretty darn good healthy .... pretty average though when just a little dinged up. My buddy is a huge Cowgirls fan, and he complains about him all the time. Nicks can go scratch as far as I am concerned. He has a combined 109 catches from 202 targets over the last two years (28 games played). 3 total touchdowns over that time span (which admittedly would rank high for the Jets, but that is besides the point). I think he has shown little heart, drive or motivation in the last two seasons. He is the Giants version of Santonio Holmes ... except he actually had seasons of impressive play to look back on.
This. Anyone who wants Nicks on the Jets hasn't been paying attention. He's also a bit of a malcontent and lockerroom cancer. The Jets don't need someone like that on the team. Some fans act like this is still the Rick Kotite Jets and we are desperate for the dregs and malcontents of other teams. I can't believe I'm seeing names like Nicks, Britt and Talib mentioned as FAs the Jets should sign.
Well Talib has been one of the best corners in the league since he has been on the Pats and has also kept his nose clean recently. Nicks and especially Britt are malcontents as of yesterday. Talib I would be interested in if the price is reasonable.
I would take Talib in a heartbeat... He hasn't been into any trouble since he left Tampa... He has turned his shit around...
Sign Maclin, draft Matthews and Seferian-Jenkins in rounds 1 & 2. Offense fixed. Well not fixed, but a helluva lot better.
Agreed, I esp. don't get the Kenny Britt love. Nicks half-assed it in a contract year? No thanks there either. Receiver-rich draft, go get at least a pair.
I readily acknowledge that Talib is a very talented player and a very good CB. I haven't heard anything about his keeping his nose clean. Wasn't he suspended for part of this season, or am I remembering last season or an earlier year? If he has indeed changed, then I would welcome him. I believe in second chances for people. We all make mistakes and screw up. It will be interesting to see what his price is. I'd bet neither he nor Verner will be cheap, and probably not even reasonable. I'd love to add Verner, but if Talib has changed and is more reasonable, I could accept him and even root for him.
Based on several of your positive comments about Talib, I decided to do some research. I see that he only played in 13 games this season and 10 last season, and in fact, has never played a full 16-game season in his career. His best two season (in terms of games played) were his first two, with 15 each. It sounds as if he has some injury issues. In 2010 he injured his hip and a tendon tore off the bone. In 2011 he had hamstring issues. CBS reports that Robert Kraft said that Talib was bothered by a hip injury the second half of this past season (the same hip, is it an ongoing problem?). He also was knocked out of the AFC Championship Game for the 2nd straight year. His knee was injured, but supposedly there's no structural damage. According to RotoWorld, the Pats definitely want Talib back, but have no plans to franchise him. They also expect there to be a lot of interest in Talib around the league. One of the Pats beat writers (Jeff Howe) speculates that the Pats are going to offer Talib a 3-year deal worth $21 million and incentives that could increase the maximum worth of the contract. CBS Sports thinks the figure could be $25 million with incentives. Would you guys pay $7 million plus to him per year? Signing him, could knock the Jets out of signing at least two other FAs, maybe more. According to Wikipedia, he was suspended for 4 games in 2012 for using PEDs. Even if he has cleaned up his act, I'm not sure I'd want him considering his injury issues and likely big contract he'll get. In terms of cost, Verner might not be any better, and may be worse. Yahoo Sports speculates that he might be seeking top 5 CB money. He is a very good CB. Some rank him as the best FA CB available, others the 3rd behind Brent Grimes and Talib. He is a fan favorite in Tennessee. I think the Jets might be better off with someone like Sam Shields
He was suspended in 2012 while still with the Bucs, he was then traded for and served the final 1 or 2 games of his suspension on the Pats. He has not gotten into any TROUBLE since joining New England and has done nothing but be a team player and say all the right things. However, he left the 2012 AFC Championship game with a hip injury. In 2013 he injured his hip against the Saints and missed a few games. He was fine for the majority of the season after that until the AFC Championship again. Injuries are his issue, trouble is not, at least not since leaving Tampa. I think Talib will be fine anywhere with a strong locker room and disciplinary head coach.
