I don't really know what to say about the article other than that it was the last Mehta article I'll ever read. He's been such a crappy journalist for the last two years. It's like he beat the world record for becoming an under performing bottom feeder rolling in the muck.
Here is why the article is so bad. He is knocking Idzik as a personnel evaluator. Except none of the criticisms have anything to do with how his acquisitions have performed on the field. And Mehta's suggested replacements are a joke. Let's start with QB. Garrard was the perfect potential, cheap one year stop gap. If Mehta knew Garrard was injured, why didn't he say so at the time he was acquired? Flynn? I think Ikzik knows Flynn. Does Idzik want to give up assets so that Flynn can lose the job a rookie two years in a row. Hasselbeck? Should Idzik continue handing out bad contracts to over the hill vets? the QB situation is very short term. The issue is not whether Smith starts, but when. Asfor RB, have Ivory or Goddson failed on the field? was it common knowledge that Goodson had a drinking problem? Ivory is going to practice this week and may turn out to be fine. It's not like his injury was serious. As for WR, if we are basing everything on the first game, it does not look that bad. Everybody complains that the Jets have not developed young receivers. Now we have two young recovers starting - Hill and Kerley. What better time to develop them than in a rebuilding year. And that is the last point. Any Jets fan, and beat reporter with half a brain, knows this is a rebuilding year. Ikzik was not buidling a team for this season and a one year run. He was cleaning Tanny's mess. And Ryan will be evaluated with that in mind. If Holmes can't play and the receivers fall apart, and Smith is not ready, and the RB acquisitions can't get on the field, how is it Ryan's fault. The key to the article, and what is starting to bother the beat writers, is what Mehta wrot early in th article. His greatest fear is that the circus has clearly left town and he is stuck covering a quiet rebuilding "irrelevant" team. It is a gossip reporter's nightmare. Poor Manish.
Hah, apparently he's paid to troll Jet fans... that's an epic-ly bad article. I thought it was common knowledge that Idzik was picking up some high-risk, high-reward, low-cost vets with the hopes of getting us out of salary cap hell. Well, I suppose the trashy articles generate more buzz and get more views.
It's actually good that Mehta publishes it now, very telling. I bet it's one of those pre-written articles he wrote when Idzik came to town, saved it and was waiting for the opportunity. The telling part is that Mehta is putting it out now. To me it says he thinks that there might not be really poor stretches by Jets and so he might not get a chance to post it later. The way I see it, Mehta suspects Jets might be too good to legitimately publish this during the season and so he does it now so that the pre-written crap gets out instead of being buried.
He posted that on twitter this a.m. And I was reading that garbage and decided I had to check ou the responses to this crap and pretty much everyone trashed it as they should. Such garbage journalism. I tend to stay away from mannish and cimini and stick with the the str ledger staff which at least give an objective point of view.
In the future it would be great if people posting Manish articles would post the whole piece in their post. That way we can read this pile of crap without giving him the satisfaction of getting 200+ clicks from TGG alone. It only encourages this shit to continue.
The article does make some good points about poor decisions for this year but I think its reaching and is written more for page hits and shock value than actual legitimate concerns. But in the very short term evaluation there are some decisions made by Idzik that at least for now that have not turned out very well. No veteran QB - I will give him this there were plenty of upgradeable (over Sanchez) cheap options which would have allowed us to dump Sanchez. From Hasselback tocTavaris Jackson, to Campbell and so on. But in the long run is this really a big deal? By next year Geno will either be the starter or we will be drafting a QB in round 1 in 2014. Goodson signing - I would agree this has not turned out well. I have read a few articles that the Goodson signing raised a lot of eyebrows from other league FOs as a lot of teams had already flagged him as a no sign guy because of character concerns. The question was raised by more than few NFL personnel was did the Jets due their proper homework on Goodson before signing him. Whether or not that is true at this point it does not look like a good signing. But that remains to be seen. Peterman for Slauson This decision made no sense to me when Slauson signed for the vet minimum. It still makes no sense and its a downgrade for us with no savings. Moore - He graded out as the 4th best guard in football last year according to PFF. He could have been signed cheap. Our OL was very good last year and it is going to take a step back this year when we could have easily kept Slauson and Moore while the young draftees develop. Barnes and Pace - 2 cheap OLB that will hopefully give us a lot of value for a good price. Both seem to be good signings. Ivory - It remains to be seen. Draft - I did like the draft with emphasis on building the lines and adding line depth. I love that philosophy. I also love his emphasis on talent over need. Cutting costs - We were never in a bad cap situation with so much cap room next year. But I do like the emphasis Idzik brings to saving cap dollars. Although the argument can be made that cost cutting is going to far getting rid of Slauson and Moore and not spending a few more dollars to get a legitimate journeyman QB that could have held the fort down until next year. It is a delicate balance trying to win now but also protect the future. Some may argue that Tanny went to far with winning now but Idzik may be going to far with the cost cutting and essentially be throwing this year away with the Slauson/Moore and no veteran QB moves. I see the concerns in the article but I think its far to early to judge. Idzik came in with a plan to overhaul the franchise and impose some cap discipline. He is sticking to that plan even if it means sacrificing this year. It is hard to not like his approach focused on the long term along with his quiet no nonsense attitude. I may not agree with Idzik on every move but that is an impossible bar to meet. I like Idzik as I think he is good for the long term health of the franchise. I might not like the Peterman/Colon for Moore/Slauson move and did not like the Garrard gamble that failed as he easily could have signed Garrard for $1 million he was paying him and added an insurance policy in a 2nd veteran like Jackson or Hasselback. Mehta does make a good point about Hasselback being the ideal man to play for a year and teach Geno how to play like a professional rather than what Sanchez will attempt to teach him. Overall the article is an overreaction. Idzik has a plan. Not every move will work out. Give the man time and judge him in 2014 or 2015.
Mehta, is a doofus, looking to feed on the anti sanchez hype. Idzik knows, that MM will turn Sanchez into a serviceable starter, and possibly maximize his talent. The OC was the veteran hire, its why he took gambles on RBs with quetionable histories. Mehtas whole article, is written with the premise, that Idzik KNEW a priori, that Smith would fall into his lap.
At least Dick Semeni doesn't think he's a fucking GM. Manish is a joke. Mehta has a differing opinion on the NFL's Top 100 players? Excuse me while I give a shit. Mehta thinks that Geno should be resting his ankle? Excuse me whil.....
After reading mehtas article I was shocked at the lack of professionalism. It's obvious he has issues with idzik. I'm wondering what is really going on here. It's the first preseason game and this is the trash our writers put out there. This team is best served by a rebuild around young players not journeyman who might provide short term benefit without longterm upside. I'm saying play rich,d.dav, winters, geno, ellis, and any other youngster we can develop. Don't worry about backup qb's or other short term fixes. This is a throw away season, this is the time to develop and pay the price for inexperience. To maximize next yrs draft and expedite this rebuild the positions we needed to address most were put off till next yr. I'm talking about wr, olb, te. With tons of cap and draft picks next yr it's almost silly to get upset with a poor finish this yr if we play the kids and get geno going. We will have the assets to bring in 5 potential starters next yr, three of which at positions of major importance. I can very easily see a worst to first scenario play out over next two yrs.
So.....in 3 years if Milliner, Richardson & Geno Smith are in the pro-bowl....still count as a "bad start" for Idzik, because we didn't spend money on another backup QB? Just silly, Manish. Backup veteran QBs for mentoring Geno.....is a 2014 discussion.

Article was bad , but I did agree that we should have gotten Tavaris jackson. The only way we lose Rex will be only on Rex not Idzik.
Idzik has done a pretty good job of not bringing his pet players over with him from his various stops. The only guy that he's signed that was clearly on his radar from his Seattle days is Ben Obamanu and that signing was a low profile one with Obamanu on the bubble from the day he arrived. I'd have seen a Tarvaris Jackson signing as a weak move unlikely to produce big benefits for us. The reason I'd have had that take is that Jackson is good enough to potentially beat out Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith this year but he's not going to take the team anywhere. He'd just have gummed up the works at a moment when the Jets really needed clarity at QB instead. By all accounts Idzik likes Jackson and so the fact that he did not give him a deal to bring him over is a pretty good indicator of the professionalism involved in his thought processes. Idzik did roll the dice a bunch this off season but he did that from a disadvantaged position and if half the guys work out he did a really good job with his gambles.
what you have to keep in mind with the f.a. signings this year is, they were all other teams cuts and not expired contract urfa's. idzick wanted to acquire draft picks. he wasn't going to bid for anyone and wasn't taking anyone who would negate a comp pick next year. so when you look at that plan that really thins out the pool of potential additions. also he didn't give out a lot of guaranteed money so anyone who doesn't workout will hurts us this year only. not like the previous regime which paid for bad contracts for years.
The last time I checked he turned a laughing stock joke of a franchise in Seattle into a true contender. But yet some fans/reporters are expecting Idzik to make miracles happen during his first offseason? Nice to know. We traded Revis along with his insane contract demands and in return not only gained lots of cap space but also drafted Sheldon Richardson, one of the highest rated defensive lineman coming out of the draft with the 13th overall selection (in which we received from Tampa Bay). And who's to say Revis will ever return to form as the greatest CB around after a serious ACL injury? Not even healthy enough to suit up for preseason games as of right now. We then drafted one of (if not) the highest rated coverage corner in Dee Milliner. And no, Milliner isn't replacing Revis as our number one cornerback but instead, an all-pro in Antonio Cromartie is. Drafted one of (if not) the highest rated QB in Geno Smith during the second round as well. A steal. Got rid of lots of bad contracts, picked up some really solid free agents in Barnes who put up 11 sacks the year before last. Dawan Landry who put up 111 tackles in 2010, 97 tackles in 2011 and 100 tackles last season (great tackler) for a Safety. Traded a 4th round draft pick for a kid in Chris Ivory, who's only 25 years of age in which has the talent, ability and potential to become our featured back, signed an elite pass catching TE in Kellen Winslow Jr. as a free agent (who looked nice during game one of our preseason), picked up a veteran guard on a one year contract in Willie Colon, drafted a rookie guard in Winters etc. even went and made sure to sign Braylon Edwards as an outside WR since Holmes is currently hurt. The list goes on and on. He's had a fantastic offseason with lots of potential with plenty of these kids. Really excited to see Geno, Richardson, Milliner and Ivory just to name a few. Can't wait to see motivated players in Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards. Also landed us our first true offensive coordinator (with actual experience) in quite some time...
