Filesonic, fileserve, rapidshare, depositfiles, zshare, wupload, oron, hotfile are some of the alternatives to megaupload. Losing MU sucks, but someone else will take their place. The problem is the bigger picture where the US Gov't seems to be going out of their way to stop piracy and piss people off. The effects of this go beyond file sharing sites.
The US government is going out of their way because most of the companies that make money off music and movies are american. I imagine there must be some lobby pushing them to act... That said if Megavideo really had servers in the US they're a bunch of idiots. Still sad to see them go though...
SOPA isnt dead. Its going to be brought back, possibly some changes made because Obama said he wont support it in current form. PIPA, I have no idea of its status.
Just have servers in Eastern Europe... It's so fucking easy... I don't know why people are upset...They are hosting pirated movies/software/music... But there will be more to pop up in its place...the complaint alleges they took in $175 million...So there is money to be made....
Hotfile went through legal action last year and is pretty much on constant watch. All the other mentioned like Filesonic, rapidshare (lived through the US' B.S and is still hosting in Germany), depositiles, wupload, and oron all host outside of US.
These are the biggest supporters... no shock to find Viacom on this list. Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, Macmillan US, Viacom. That would require work though
PIPA ain't being brought for a vote. SOPA bill pulled... Get ready for those "tweaks"...I bet they rename the bill and attach it to a defense bill or something...
The best part of this whole thing is the idiot who introduced this bill Rep Lamar Smith's own website broke the rules of SOPA. Will the hypocrisy and above the law's they set attitude of these elected idiots ever stop? http://mashable.com/2012/01/12/sopa-sponsor/ http://www.dailytech.com/Obama+Admi...+Author+Caught+Stealing+Work/article23783.htm http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2012/01/13/pipa-weakens-as-sopa-gets-hypocritical/
it turns out the large groups that are were pushing for SOPA and the like really hated Megaupload. Not only were they growing at a very fast rate (money, popularity) they were set to launching a new service that would allow artists to sell music directly to the consumer, cutting the record labels out. And then Megaupload created this video showing that artist support them and in the end you have the results that unfolded in the past week...
