McElroy absolutely should get the start against the Bills. I don't want to see Mark in another game this year. He needs to get his head right in the offseason.
And what's the point of beating the Bills next week with Mark? Will that victory straighten out Sanchez & help him get his act together next year? no way. Sanchez needs to spend this offseason figuring out what went wrong & try to overcome them. We'll find out next season if he can pull it off. Give this game to McElroy to help his development. Even as a backup QB, McElroy is lacking onfield experience.
Here is what everybody is failing to address...do we think the OL all of a sudden forgot how to block? It was the Chargers who forced the OL into bad situations the Jets did not have the ability to adjust due to McElroy's limitations. They were putting 8 and 9 men in the box. No matter how good or bad your OL is you can't block that. The Chargers dared McElroy to beat them by stacking the box and blitzing (what we should have done to Jake Locker) The best play we called yesterday was the screen pass to Smith that went for a big gain. We should have run more screens and draws but if anything yesterday showed how ho hum our stable of running backs really are.
Absolutely no need to start or go back to Mark. It'll be good for Mac to start and have Mark do exactly what he did yesterday..
What were McElroy's limitations? You can't say his arm because he made some very good throws when he had the time (the pass to Edwards on the PI call as an example). A lot of the passes he made were check downs because no one was open or because the pass rush was about to cave in on him. The coaching staff should let him air the ball out more against the Bills because it doesn't make sense drawing passing plays for Kerley when you have a more than capable quarterback now to make the throws. McElroy's mistakes can be fixed, learning how to get the ball out quicker can be adjusted in practice and learning to feel the heat coming can be adjusted as well. He already shows he can make the reads which is already a big advantage, but the things he failed on yesterday (holding the ball too long, not feeling the pass rush) in my opinion are little things that can be adjusted in the offseason.
Oh give me a break. People will make every excuse to bash everyone but this who we defend. McElroy played awful. It was embarrassing to watch. Our offense sucks all around but most of those sacks were on Greg. He held on to the ball forever for god knows what reason. He didn't know how to step up in the pocket. He would walk into sacks. Did nothing to help the offense. Threw an awful pick and fumbled.
I know a reason, there was no one open. While he should have thrown the ball away, taking a sack is better than forcing a turnover.
I think the mistakes you mention can be fixed but I see very limited upside with him. I did see some things I liked and he was a little more athletic then I thought but the limitations I see are arm strength, there was no zip on the ball and he took way to long going through his reads and he stepped into pressure a few times. He does look like a leader and he is tough but the biggest issue facing McElroy will not be anything in his control, it's the coaching staff. I have no reason to believe that Cavanaugh, Sporano will be able to teach him how to be a good NFL QB nor do I have any belief that anybody we bring in will either simply because we are the Jets.
The Jets have to start McElroy. You don't yank somebody after one bad start when you're not playing for anything meaningful. 90% of NFL QB's have had a terrible start somewhere early on. You give McElroy a chance to bounce back and have a better start with his feet a bit more firmly on the ground. That's what a good NFL organization would do and it's what I expect the Jets to do.
The leadership capability is what I like. When you look at the elite QBs (not saying McElroy is going to evolve into an elite QB because thats just crap), but they are always fired up in the sideline and getting into the face of everyone. That's one thing I like about Brady, when he's in game mode, he's fucking scary and thats what I want our starting QB to be like. That's why when he was fired up after the refs called back his touchdown, I was very excited to see that spark in the offense. Someone earlier had said that the coaches don't want the players to be emotional and if that's still going on then that has to stop. Cavanaugh has to go, but if I were to find a replacement, the perfect coach for McElroy would be to bring back Pennington for QBs. He and Sparano could do wonders for the QBs given their time together (albeit it was like 1.5 years) in Miami. I see what you did there
I think Pennington would be a good QB coach, I thikn McElroy has a chip on his shoulder and I like that in a QB. Not saying he can never be anything more then a backup but if you look around the league all the good QB's outside of maybe Ryan and both Mannings have a chip on their shoulder.
