The flame fest would be white hot if he said "I want to sit on the bench and collect a check". He should absolutely WANT to start! he'd be doing a disservice to the team if he didn't give his all in competition for the starting job. That's not to say I hope he wins it, on the contrary. I want to see one of the youngsters snatch the keys and run, but I certainly don't want anyone on the team and especially not at the QB position that aspires to soak up pay role.

That said, if he does win it, I will be crossing my fingers that he is a system QB that finds his niche at 1 Jets Dr and makes a miracle super bowl run (take note that miracle is in bold because it most certainly would be!).

I want a franchise QB as much as the next guy, but anyone that has watched football long enough knows the draft is a crap shoot. I know there is a good deal of faith on this board in next years lot of QBs, but the thought of tanking the season and drafting the next Ryan Leaf/ Jamarcus Russell/(fill in the blank) is something I'm very weary of. THAT in my mind would be a SOJ move.

    Next week's headline:

Jets QB declares, "My mama says foosball is the Devil!"

McCown will prob be the stater going into the season if for no other reason he will have a better grasp of the offense. Not sure how complicated our new west coast O will be but Hack had a real hard time learning our play book last year and it put him behind in his development.

Do you really want a backup who doesn't want to start? Remember Mark Brunell?

But at least Brunell knew going in he was a placeholder on the bench. McClown is another JAG trying to salvage what's left of his career. Another "Mentor" in a long line of them that have only resulted in young Qb failure.

Again, another JAG trying to resurrect his career. I don't think Vick ever believed he was a "mentor".

Is that such a stretch for this team?? Remember this gem: "I'm the best cornerback in the NFL" ?

I'd prefer that the coaches were the mentors for the QBs. I don't want some backup QB teaching the future starter how to fail. They're a backup for a reason.

The only reason for anyone to start, is if it gives the team the best chance to win. As far as QB, that may be any of the three at the start of this season.

What's he supposed to say, "I'm just here to hold the clipboard"? The Jets signed him to play football, he should want to play. Its up to the coaching staff to do what's best for the team and start our young players. Its Mccown's job to play his best and do what the coaches tell him.

The Jets signed him to be a "bridge" to either Hackenberg or Petty. They did not sign McClown because of his Qb prowess. Brunell was happy to just hold the clipboard because he knew that was his role. If McClown is such a great lockerroom guy, why not sign him to the CS and let him "mentor" from the sidelines instead of on the field. At 2-22, what exactly is he showing Hack and Petty? The best ways to lose games? Seems McClown has got that part down pat.

I still don't see the need for a "mentor" on the field as that's a job I always thought better suited for an assistant QB coach who happened to be a former player. Both Petty and Hack need to play and the Jets need to find out if either one can play at the NFL level. The only way that happens is if they play meaningful games, not getting "mentored" on the sidelines.

he's 2-22 or something ridiculous like that over the last four seasons. He gives us the best chance to win a low enough draft pick that we may finally get to draft a real franchise QB

Never forget! The booger swipe will be forever branded in my brain box. Wasn't there a guy here with a user name markbrunellsdebt? Something like that. Kinda sums it up. Please remind me why I paid my invoice.
