I like the Jordan pick, but frankly I'd rather have wide receiver. If Austin is available, pick him and call it a day.
The Jets SHOULD not pick a tight end in the first round under ANY circumstances. Johnny Mitchell..Kyle Brady..Dustin Keller were all good players, but in the end, just OK. This team needs a WR who can spread the field.
I agree that the Jets should NOT draft a tight end in the first round . The Jets do this every 4-5 years and it has never ever been worth it . The Jets need a pass rusher in the worst way, expecially with Revis gone. If Jordan is there at 9 the Jets should run to the podium. I doubt he drops . If no Jordan , I prefer Jones over Mingo. Hands and technique trump athleticism here, but I could be wrong. No to Tavon Austin. He is just too small IMO. 170 pounds? If Geno Smith is there at 9 or better yet 13, grab him. A team only gets a few shots at a franchise QB and there are no guarantees the Jets can get a QB next year. The Jets need to build an offense and QB is so important. I have yet to hear a compelling argument against the Smith pick except that he is better value later in round one. That is a BS reason not to take him. QBs are different from any position and should and are drafted higher than their relative ranking. The Jets will never win without a QB and passing on Smith and "hoping" yo draft a QB next year is stupidity. I would also be happy filling one of the guard spots. I will throw up in my mouth if the Jrts use 9 or 11 on a tight end or Austin. WRs can be had in later rounds . Successful QBs drafted after round1 are rare and I see a QB run at the beginning of round 2 by teams like Arizona Philly Bufffalo etc
I really don't see Jordan falling all the way to 9..most people have Jacksonville taking him at 2..and I would really hate for the Jets to take a TE with a first round pick unless they trade down to the bottom of the round..at 13 it would be a wasted pick and for what, Revis? I can just see the headlines now.."Jets traded Revis for a tight end" perfect..
Here is how Mayock sees the draft unfolding before our #9 pick: 1. KC: Eric Fisher 2. JAX: Luke Joekel 3. OAK: Shariff Floyd 4. PHI: Lane Johnson 5. DET: Zeke Ansah 6. CLE: Geno Smith 7. ARI: Jon Cooper 8. BUF: Tavon Austin 9. NYJ: Dion Jordan Mayock is the only ESPN/NFL draft "expert" I respect but some of these picks seem like reaches. All the planets will have to align in order for Jordan to fall to #9, but I would be stoked if it happened. 10. TEN: Dee Milliner 11. SD: Chance Warmack 12. MIA: DJ Fluker 13. NYJ: Tyler Eiffert Like many other posters before me I'm not thrilled about the Jets taking a TE in round 1. We need an offensive playmaker but there do not appear to be any remaining who would not be available later in the round. Best choice here is to trade down if possible (Mayock said during the draft that trades were not allowed for his mock). If a trade down is not possible we will probably take BPA, which may turn out to be Star Lotulelei.
I hope he's right about Jordan, that would be amazing. Not a huge fan of picking a TE that high but as others have pointed out this is a no trade draft. So if we do trade down on the 13th pick and pick up a TE in the late first or second or something that would be a good deal for us. Obviously depends what how far we drop down and who we get with that pick but I'm confident we could get a good player in the mid-20s that can help us out right away.
In order for Jordan to make it to 9 here's what has to happen Jacksonville has to pass on him by taking Eric Fisher Oakland wont take him we know this Philadelphia would have to go with Lane Johnson or trade back behind us Detroit wouldn't pick him as I dont see him fitting in their front 7 like Ansah will Cleveland has Kruger and Sheard at OLB I think they go QB, CB, OL or WR Arizona seems likely to take an OL Buffalo has to take Nassib here if they want him or they go for Tavon So practically if he gets pass Philly he may fall right into our laps since not team behind us enough seems likely to trade up and take him As for Eifert and all these comparisons to the Jets past mistakes, this is a new era, Woody is still here but if we blank him out I got faith that Idzik is going to get it right Eifert would give our QB a legit weapon along with Holmes/Hill/Kerley/?Ivory?/Goodson and thats a potent offense
For a bunch of fans who spend the entire season blaming the QB for every single thing bad that happens on the field during a game, it amazes me that nobody wants to consider drafting a QB with one of the two first round picks. How and when are the Jets going to obtain a franchise QB without drafting and developing one? You do realize that about 75% of NFL teams play with QBs drafted in the first round and that star QBs drafted in round 2 or later are a rarity? So tell me. Where does the Jets QB of the future come from and when? And don't say next year's draft because who knows who will be available and when the Jets will pick.
The only trade of our #9 I would want us to do would be to MIN or STL for their two firsts. #1-#8 seems reasonable all but Geno going to Cleveland. I think he's the only wild card in there. Altough, that could just as easily be Milliner. So yeah I could see Jordan falling.
Next years draft. Yes I know you said not to say this but it's true. Better QBs in that class. Where the Jets pick in the draft is irrelevant because they'll trade up for a QB if they have to. Chances are, if they still sorely need a QB next year they'll be picking high enough to select one worth a damn.
If Sanchez wasn't killing the cap we'd take a QB but he deserves 1 more year 2 years in the playoffs 2 years not 1 last shot
Drafting a 2nd round talent QB in the 1st round gives him a better chance to be a good player? I only say that because I am not sold on ANY QB in this draft. Granted I am just some putz whose highest lvl of actual football experiance was high school, and coaching Pop Warner, so its easy to say I don't know shit (try it - my wife seems to like saying it). But any year previous when there were top QB's ... there was NEVER a question they belonged there (other than Tebow). This year we started with no QBs worthy for a 1st rounder, now we are hearing there could maybe three taken, because teams might REACH for a player. No reaching please ... no good can come from that.
With five or six potential franchise QBs in next years draft, there is absolutely no reason to trade up. I have to agree with your last sentence, if the Jets are that bad next year because of the QB position, we'll be in a position to grab an outstanding one anywhere in the first of the 14 draft.
I'm all for the trading back but only if we get the proper value.. I doubt any team is desperately looking to move up to 9 or 13. They are not going to get tons of value for those draft picks. Keep dreaming guys. We can't fix the entire team in one draft.
Imagine this offense next QB- RB- Mike Goodson and Chris Ivory FB- who cares WR- Santonio Holmes WR- Stephen Hill Slot- Jeremy Kerley WR4- Rookie or Vet TE- Tyler Eifert plus a blocking TE with nice hands O-Line- Ferguson-Pugh-Mangold-Colon-Howard I'd sign up for this I left QB blank because I think regardless of who it is we're gonna have the best option possible under center
I don't want the Jets to draft a QB in the first or second this year because there are other holes to fill. Let's bring in our QB with a supporting cast. If we drafted a QB, he would most likely start week 1 and we would be setting him up to fail. I'd like to see them grab a guard in the first or second round and a tight end/austin in the first our second round. (We would still be able to get a pass rusher/safety with the remaining pick) That would give us the strongest left side in the NFL and a playmaker going into the 2014 Draft.
the thing is the offense only has to be above average and at least put some points on the board but this is a great foundation to build on
