we'll have to agree to disagree, Murrell. I believe the athletes of the present day and the level of competition is light years' ahead of what Maynard was used to back in his day. What Revis is doing this early in his career is nothing short of remarkable....and he's doing it against receivers that are more physically gifted than Maynard (A.Johnson, C.Johnson, T.Owens to name a few). I'm not shitting on Maynard, I admire him and his hall of fame career. This is just my opinion.
I'm saying that despite Namath easily being the best QB in franchise history, Revis is superior to him with regard to their respective positions.
Don is really putting us in a tough spot. + He is a legend and part of the only team that has got us a ring. Receivers weren't divas back then and the players were a lot tougher in general. - Dude played in an era where black players where barley allowed to play. ...end argument
wow, you'd think scrawny white guys who like to run their mouths would get a little more respect on an internet message board.
Yup. And while we're at it, Curtis Martin will be in the HoF as well, and it's a little premature to compare Revis to him nevermind Namath and Maynard. But I know, that is how Rex rolls, and it makes for some nice stories in the offseason.
This illustrates what happens when teams from different eras play - here is Arsenal from 1933 vs Liverpool from 1991
o wow you right. well played. i even looked it up before i posted but searched nfl instead of afl. good call.
This is... A little extreme. Maynard might have been one of the best WRs of HIS time, but Revis is the BEST defender of this time- and considering that athletes are much more physically gifted and skilled NOW than they were back then, I wouldn't throw down any money in favor of Maynard in this match-up.
It's great that Maynard feels that way. Hey, as many others have said, why dis a hall of famer, especially OUR hall of famer? Those who say it would be no contest are out of their mind. Maynard is a HALL OF FAME WR. It would at least be a challenge for Revis. Until Revis is in, Don gets the benefit of my doubt. Without him we don't have our lone shining moment. I love Revis too, and as the post above me says, I might put money on Revis since he's handled everyone else, but, let's give Don his due and let him trash talk. Did I mention, HE'S AN NFL HALL OF FAME WR. Those of you you claiming that the older guys were out of shape etc, I say bullshit. Back than you didn't see all the fat-asses on the field that you see now. No huge bellies. No fat fucks playing because they occupy space but can hardly run. Might not be true for CB's and WR's of course, but don't cast aversions on the players of the 60's and 70's. I'd say they were tougher then than now.
Okay ... step back from criticisng my man!! Don would have caused Revis problems as he has the speed to be a real vertical threat similar to a Moss in that it was a case of throw it as far as you can and I will catch it. Anyway i am biased as this man is the greatest sportsperson i have met....
This. As stats of that era are sketchy at best, use athletics as a guideline. Look at how fast the mens 100 mtrs was then to how its run today (as a guideline) because I think the two sports do mirror eachother in athletic prowess. Todays NFL player is bigger, faster, stronger and arguably smarter. I'm not trying discredit the players of yesteryear, but with the rise in technology in sport and what we know about diet and everything else, todays players should damn well be better. Don was supremely gifted, as is Revis, but with Revis, I don't think we've seen PRIME yet, so after Revis has hung up his cleats, then lets have a look back. Revis has held nearly all the NFLs top WRs who are compared to Maynard and ranked above Maynard......so I'm not sure what hes really going on about. #badtasteinmouth
I love Maynard, but that's insane. Revis is lights out under the current rules. Can you imagine if we were playing Pre "Bill Polian Changes the Rules to enhance Mannings Value' days?
