I'm down with your description. It's not the way the draft was conducted, it's the context it was conducted in. You get the feeling that Tannenbaum and Mangini really misread the state of the Jets as they were acquiring two fairly good players and ignoring a multitude of other holes in the process. This team at no point in the last year has been a couple of good players away from catching the Pats. It's been upwards of a half dozen positions that needed to be upgraded to catch up to them (RG, RT, NT, DE, ILB, OLB, CB) and what we've done in the last few months is resolve maybe 2 or 3 of those at best. That leaves us a full year and another draft away from being able to close the gap on them. And the Pats are not a fixed target, they get better every year themselves and will continue to do that for the next couple of years until age and attrition begin to kick in. What you need to do in this situation is sit on your picks and take the best available player and build some quality depth. Losing depth to attain quality is just begging to get smacked around by the injury jinx and be no better off than we were before, maybe worse off.
Exactly! There is still Santucci and Duckworth on the board that are OG that will probably fall to us in 6. There is also Rhema McKnight, David Ball and Courtney Taylor that can fall to us as well. CALM DOWN EVERYONE. We didn't have a lot of gapping holes as some of you are over exaggerating them to be. We have two picks and two positions we still need and we'll get good value for both of them. We did amazing. We got the best corner in the draft and a first round caliber LB that fell for no reason. This was on the best drafts in a long time. Considering last year was a rebuilding year for this draft... this year we drafted for KEY talent which we GOT. This is a five star draft so far for us as far as Im concerned.
I could make a solid team nucleus from these "tackling dummies" Jason Ferguson Pat Tillman Matt Birk Donald Driver Desmond Clark Adalius Thomas Tom Brady T.J. Houshmandzadeh Cato June Tully Banta-Cain Marques Colston
I don't understand myself. Are people really that mad they didn't get to add the 5th or 6th best Offesive Lineman and some questionable defensive Corners/Defensive Tackles/Out side Line backers in lue of picking the Number1 corner and number 2 ILB??? I'll take Revis and Harris plus who ever falls to our last picks.
Well I guess we should all hope that next season we finish with the worst record in the NFL , that way at least the doom and gloom merchants will be happy eh?
i'd rather have revis and harris, two starters right away that can make an impact, than 3 or 4 guys who wont start and will just cycle in. Calm your balls man
I think the picks were very great. Darelle Revis could be a star and David Harris seems to be very solid in the middle. Bender should provide some beef and Stuckey some speed. They should all see the field and contribute in their first years. It does suck that we only have 4 picks. There are other areas that needed youth such as the Defensive Line. I wish we could have gotten a pass rusher at some point and Tight End maybe but we did very well with the few picks we kept.
Nice summary, man. I too would have liked a pass rusher but we'll have to make due with Bowen (and who knows maybe Wadsworth). Anything else, NT bulk, o-line depth, is either on the roster or available as an UDFA. I like the draft, Harris even more than Revis. Our run defense is better, we have two starting caliber corners and a real number one RB. Bring on the season!
Now that the draft is over answer me this question how the hell are we suppose to keep up with the Patriots.. now that they signed Randy Moss for a 4th round pick!!!! come on i might not be the smartest guy but if we held on too our picks we possible could of had randy moss Cotchery and coles whose stopping us now.. instead we might be chalking those up as two losses already.... randy moss was practically begging to come to New York to be with chad pennington
Guys look at it this way. In a normal, 7 man draft, how many players will actually see the field and consistently contribute to the team? 3, 4 TOPS. With the signing of Thomas, which you have to count, plus Revis and Harris- we have 3 right there. Factor in the OL taken on day 2, and you may have 4. Anyone after that is a "bonus" for the team. Did you actually think that we were going to stand pat, draft 7 players, all of whom would contribute from the gate? I don't think that's ever happened in the history of the draft. Did you hope to find Coltson's cousin? I sure did, but you only strike gold like that once every few years (Chrebet UDFA). Chalk this up for what it was. The team felt that standing at the original draft slots that the players available wouldn't immediately help the franchise- so they traded up and landed players they felt could immediately contribute. Did you think that we were going to address EVERY glaring need facing this team over the course of this past weekend? We didn't address every need but found ourselves a starting CB, starting LB, starting HB and great depth at OT. Granted, positions like OLB and NT have yet to be addressed, but it could be that the team feels like our present personnel may do the job- that's why they are GM's and you and I are not. Let's wait until these guys take the field during the season before we pass judgment. And oh yeah, we can't be the reincarnation of the Patriots so please stop having your wet dreams....
Ever think that maybe Mangini and Co. are happy with the free agent DEs and the improvement late last season from D-Rob and thats why they didn't mind trading all those picks instead taking DEs or DTs
D-Rob had 1.5 sacks after the bye as opposed to 1 before it. Yah that's real improvement. None of the DE's we brought in projects as any kind of real pass-rusher in the 3-4. You can bibble and babble about David Bowens all you want and it won't change the fact that he had Jason Taylor opposite him in Miami and he'll have Shaun Ellis opposite him here. The facts are that our pass rush was among the weakest in the league last season against fairly mediocre to poor opposition. This season we get more talented opponents and we did nothing significant to improve the pass rush via free agency or the draft.
two impact day one starters on defense.....this is a great draft and a future replacement for Anthony Clement
Yes, stuff the run. What did he do to do that? We had the 24th(I believe) worst rush defense in the league. Hardly a great tribute to your NT.
The last 2 years we had a great draft. What the hell are you talking about. We are finally picking smart.
We were 32nd against the run when you adjust for who our opposition was. Footballoutsiders.com has a great running analysis of each team's actual performance given the strength of their opposition.
