there will be a ton of players cut at positions we need to fill after roster cut downs. if 9/6 9/7 rolls around and nothing has been done then ill start to hyperventilate a bit.
The Jets make several obvious moves to lower their cap for the year and they also begin looking at what the long range structure of the team is. If they didn't win much this year with MJD and Sanchez and Holmes then they probably go looking in a different direction at QB. The decisions on Revis begin to become easier because they've had him for two straight unsuccessful years and all the BS about franchise CB goes away. If they win some but don't win a Super Bowl, well they've got a lot of questions hanging over their heads at that point and I'd think they start picking and choosing among who is absolutely necessary for the plan and who is just eating a ton of cap space but not key. Obviously they have some success at this point to look at and they have to figure out why they won the games they did. If they win the Super Bowl? Hehe.
they cant just move away from Sanchez next year..his contract is structured so he is cuttable in 2014. The Jets are committed to giving him 2 more years. The franchise CB talk isnt going away. Revis is the absolute best player at his position in the league and its not even close.
Sure. But will the available players be at our positions of need (or in this case the positions we cut)? Randomness/luck will determine the outcome.
Based on other teams depth charts RT's will surely be cut (specifically Lions and Rams). The Jets could always go all in and make a trade for someone but RT's will be cut loose. As will punters and WR's. Schilens can go and we can claim a WR. Schilens is arguably our #5 WR so I'm confident we can find someone to fill his role. Hunter...Well anyone who is cut lose will be better so I'm also confident this can happen. P...Punters are cut in mass. Keeping a special eye on Marquette King.
Slash their RB's inability to stay healthy. Incarcerated Bob lives in a world where the obvious is the inevitable. And being a follower of his is a prerequisite to reading what he writes.
I was thinking along the lines of drafting a QB in the 2013 draft and having him take the job in 2014. If the Jets have a bad year this year and the defense is not clearly relying on Revis as the focal point the franchise CB thing will go away overnight. In fact if the Jets have a bad year it will go away. Champ Bailey was seen as a franchise CB in both Washington and Denver and that label just vanished into the mists when people realized that great teams did not magically assemble around him. Asomugha was never seen as a franchise CB even when he had the Deion tag as the guy nobody throws at because the Raiders were such a pathetic heap at the time.
ah gotcha on QB. Yeah that seems likely if it comes to it. I do think that the level that Revis plays at no matter what he will be considered a "franchise CB". But I do see your point.
that's not his point because his post wasn't in response to whether Tanny could clear the cap space for Drew, and thus his clearing the cap space for Aso would be a relevant response. his reply was strictly in response to the assertion that the Jets will not get Drew, so his post has zero to do with cap space.
Please explain how we can't afford him. This year we we have $6+ Million in cap space. $3 Million we could save on releasing Eric Smith. That is $9 Million available to us. Tanny could offer Him a 5 year 35 Million with 15 Million guaranteed. MJD is not a spring chicken so he will see a front loaded contract. I would assume the first year (2012) would be somewhere around his current contract ($5 Million), all guaranteed. His second year (2013) contract will probably be the largest at say $8 Million ($6 Million guaranteed). His third year (2014) will complete his guaranteed money at $4 Million, and $8 Million in his fourth year (2015), and $9 Million in his fifth year (2016). In 2013, we currently have 53 players on the roster, and a cap charge of $138 Million. Let's assume the salary cap is going to be the same as this year, about $121 million. We are able to role over the $5 Million in cap space this year making the cap $126 Million, leaving us $12 Million over the cap. Eric Smith is due $3,000,000 in 2013, and since he is gone we are only $9 Million over. Pace, Hunter and Scott are due $19+ million, which we can/will save if/when we cut/trade them. Now we are $10+ million to the good, and we haven't done anything creative. If we have to get creative there are several ways to do that. Keep in mind we still need to re-sign Keller, Moore, and/or Slauson. The word is still out on Bell, Landry, and we won't have any need for Greene. It would actually be pretty simple to sign MJD, and I am more concerned about what we would have to give up.
that is exactly why it won't happen, unless jax throws a starting right tackle into the deal. i'd send sanchez and picks and greene the other way. then, go with tebow or mc elhroy at qb. throw only when it's wide open/necessary. but, i'm sure the cap issues make it impossible even if the teams agree on players/picks.
