If you had the Bills QB's right now and were looking at the same free agent pool everybody else is Cassel actually looks good to a team going for it next season. The Bills tried to sign McCown and lost out on him. Cassel is probably the next best option.

Not quite. Buffalo swapped their 5th for Minny's 6th this year and also give Minny a 7th rounder in 2016.

Buffalo doesn't have a full allotment this year with the Watkins and Bryce Brown trades so they probably didn't want to straight up surrender any picks this year (hence the swap). Draft chart wise, this probably works out to the equivalent of a 6th round pick.

I have not seen Cassel play in a couple of years but I remember him as a guy who really just cannot pass. Very inaccurate, no?

accuracy is adequate, but his arm is weak and his running ability is kinda shot. not even sure why he is still in the league. he had his moment with NE and KC. if EJ manuel can't beat out cassell then he should just pack his bag and quit football

I just remember a guy who would just throw a pass from nowhere every now and then, with no pressure on him. Like a kid whose hands were too small for the football. Ha ha ha. And yes, overall accuracy I remember being below average.

Yeah, but they never intended to pay him. They knew they would trade him.

If Rex runs a usual Rex offense, then Cassel could be a good fit. Make him a game manager the way the Pats did in 2008. He just can't make big mistakes which he seems to be decent at.

Given what's out there for available QBs, this was a decent signing for Buffalo. Cassel isn't going to win any games by himself but he's good enough to start a few and keep the seat warm for Manuel or whoever else they eventually bring in.

Yeah, their hand was forced with the Brady injury and the way he played. Had to franchise him and get something for him.

People have a flawed idea about Cassel. He's only looked like an NFL QB while playing for a team that Brady won 18 games on the previous season. Going 11-5 with that Pats team in 08 was like going 8-8 on a lot of other teams.

But some have this notion that any QB that played behind Brady deserves as many shots as possible.

Lets not forget that at times in his career Cassel was a backup to both Brady Quinn and Christian Ponder.

Yep 5 years ago...and then forgot that winning the division means you have to play a playoff game.

just correcting the info that he never did anything outside of NE. I don't like Cassell as a QB but he has had some success.

Not a bad pickup by a Ground n Pound team. Get a Qb that you can limit his throws and he's good with it. All he has to do is take a snap, hand off to Shady McCoy and run the other way. Can't think of an easier way to get a paycheck in the NFL except perhaps long snapper. Cassel can absolutely hand the ball off and in Rexy World, that's all they'll ask him to do.

    Easy Money for Cassel... :)

Plus if they can ever get anything out of Manuel maybe sitting for another full year can help him.

Although I'm not so sure. What a shit draft for QBs that was.

If they gave up a 6th or less for Cassel then this was an ok move by the Bills. I don't understand the amount of bashing taking place in this thread. Cassel only needs to be better than Jamarcus Manuel for this move to be worthwhile (assuming reasonable compensation). Cassel will not be expected to do much for the Bills, and having a veteran around helps take pressure off the fact that Manuel was their only option.

This hardly will help them win any championships, but its a functional stopgap.

my brother is a big Bills fan.. he was texting me and made a typo, accidentally calling him Matt Hassel. Talk about the perfect "freudian slip"

The acquisition is an example of the "Rex Ryan School of Quarterback Management" Chapter 4, section 3 (after the paragraph on colored wristbands)

    - - "While attaching your team to a bad young QB, bring in an even worse, veteran QB for a 'competition'. The word competition is used loosely here because it won't be a real competition. The sole purpose is to not hurt the feelings of your bad young QB and generate confidence when he easily beats out the worse, washed up veteran in a stacked competition. [for further clarification: see the section on Sanchez/Brunell, Smith/Vick]. " - -

Again, what did they give up? If it's a 6th or 7th, then not a big deal, hardly crippling to their future.

I guess based on the idea they want to ground and pound it's ok, but I think Cassel is fair to poor QB as judging by normal QB attributes.

Let Rex be Rex- it's one less thing to worry about
