This doesn't seem too far-fetched, but there needs to be a better source before I feel this rumor has legs.
Problems we have/will have in the next year: 1.) OL 2.) WR 3.) RB 4.) S etc... Mathis is a great player but trading a 4th round pick away for a team that has shit depth probably isnt a good move. Plus this team is way past the "just need a pass rusher for a SB push" phase Big Jenks said it right...were not poised for a push and are in a mild rebuilding year Plus hes already 30
Safety and OL yes. WR? There are plenty of late rounders and FA's to pick up. RB? Really? LT, Greene. McKnight, Conner. Bilal? x? Not enough depth?
If the Colts draft Luck they could restructure Manning, but remember rookie deals are much cheaper now.
I said now and within the next year meaning next season as well. LT was has been our most productive RB the past two years and will be gone most likely. McKnight has shown great promise as a returner but jack shit as a RB. Greene has been less than impressive as the feature guy...you can put some of that on the o-line but still he hasnt looked great. And Bilal is still a wildcard. I agree about WR but it will need to be addressed. Rather save the 4th rounder on OL or WR that Sanchez can work with for awhile rather than another "rental".
Where do I sign up? Mathis is a FA to be so even if he's a rental player, you WILL get compensation for him in the 2013 NFL Draft, which could be a 3rd or 4th round pick if he bolts as a free agent. That's why I don't think Indy makes this trade unless they get a 3rd or a 4th and a 4th in 2013 or something like that.
trading mathis for a 4th round is completely worth it. honestly find me a better pass rush in the 4th round. like it or not our defense is having trouble getting to the quarterback. most of our sacks are coverage sacks or heavy blitzes on 3rd down. having a pass rush on 1st and 2nd down would be more beneficial to us on 3rd and long, where we send extra dbs on a blitz
It didn't seem likely at all, but sometimes the unlikeliest scenarios end up happening. Mathis and Wayne are both in the last years of their contracts and the Colts' season is pretty much already over. So from a certain perspective, getting something for them (assuming they cannot resign both, or don't want to) would have made sense, yes. Freeney's contract is pretty huge (making it prohibitively difficult to give a ton of money to Mathis too) and Wayne's best years are behind him. He's lost a step and wasn't the fastest receiver to begin with, so either way it didn't seem impossible. I didn't know about the Schefter thing when I first posted this. And at some point someone else did too, as the mods merged the threads.
There is no way in hell the Jets would be stupid enough to trade a 4th round pick for a 30 year old 4-3 defensive end so that they can convert him to outside linebacker while teaching him how to play 3-4 in mid-season. Nobody is that stupid.
hows about putting mathis at DE and moving wilk to DT that makes complete sense. wilks pash rush abilities are not even close to what mathis can do. wilk can easily replace devito as DT. think about our line with mathis... Mathis at DE, Pouha and Wilk both at DT
We are a base 3-4 but we still run a fair amount of 4-3 and would probably do so more if we did get Mathis. Especially since BT is out for the season it would make sense.
