no problem...understood. It would be hypocritical to bitch about one and not the other...I got your point.
Mark Schlereth is a giant turd,he does make some fair points about Decker having watched every game he has ever played in as a Bronco analyst douche guy,but that doesn't mean he should have said it
More like it would be hypocritical to bitch about ONLY the CB situation, specifically not signing Rodgers-Cromartie. Some people can't comprehend that spending $9 mil on a guy who before this season was average is a bad idea. But they wanted to do it anyway just so we have a body at CB that can play better than the current people on our roster. Meanwhile... we sign Decker, a guy who has scored TD's no matter WHO is throwing him the ball, for market value for a WR of his caliber, and it's overpaying?
While I see your point MP, I disagree about the position...perhaps not the player you point out as the target for signing. I agree with the signing of Decker making complete sense both on talent and money. While Rodgers Cromartie may not have been the perfect signing, there is a chance that the CB position could keep the Jets out of the playoffs. When you have the potential to be a top 5..or maybe even a top 3 defense, you can not go into the season with the dbs we have. Many want to point out that who knew Milliner would get hurt etc. That's nonsense. In a passing league did anyone feel comfortable with Wilson as your nickel? Did anyone feel good about not having one average backup? You cant go into a season with the db's we had. There are 3 or 4 average to above average db's who were on the list to bring in here and look at...and we decided to play it cute and go with what we had. While the next argument would be that this is still year 2 in a rebuilding process and that the extra cap money would benefit us next year, when you have the chance to be top 3 defense...you go for it and did not have to break the bank going for it. My thinking with Revis was it was a 1 year big payout and we had the extra cap space and it would come off after this year anyway...but I get the negatives to it now. Still, nobody can justify having a front 7 like we have and having over 20 million in cap space and not bringing one AVERAGE cb. With the pressure we should bring this year with our line, an average CB becomes a above average CB. We did not have to break the bank to make that position better. Theres playing it smart and playing it cute..and Idzik messed up on this side of the ball..just as much as he did very well on the other side of the ball.
I appreciate the rest of your post while I whole-heartedly disagree with it. This is the only part I have an issue with. What average CB was out there? Vontae Davis got PAID by his team, he wasn't leaving. Verner was not a fit in this defense. Flowers has already proven to be a bad fit in the defense considering he was terrible in it last year. Then there's DRC who got overpaid by a team desperate to make one last run with an aging QB who hasn't played well in two years. I don't want to get into the Revis thing because it's been done a million times and there's a thread stickied on the top of this forum that explains every single reason why I am 100% fine with not signing Revis and was 100% against it from day one. So a few things... there were no middle of the pack CBs available at a middle of the pack price. The guys available for the right price were not a fit. Bringing in any of the middle of the pack CBs(or Revis) at the price tag they had would have put a huge dent in the cap space we have next year... the year we need to sign Mo. I don't want to turn this into a cornerback thread because that issue is soooo so tired and overdone, so I'll bring it to this: Idzik played it smart, not cute. On both sides of the ball at that.
I will just say this MP. Im not a GM. I doubt any team would hire me as a GM..but we hired Idzik...and just saying there were no average cb's is not a good excuse. We had around 20 draft picks to trade or do something with. The Giants...the Patriots..several teams upgraded their secondary in a big way. Now your argument may be solid about how much other teams spent on some of them..you might be totally right. Still, you do something. Its not like we are disagreeing about bringing in a top 5 QB here somehow. While the few you mentioned might not have been the answer...Walls or Wilson or converting a safety was not close to better. Lets not pretend this problem snuck up on us...we all knew this was a problem in February. Lets discuss this if you want in the secondary thread...don't want to bring this thread downstream.
