for the people who dont like gastineau, fine dont like him. his strength was the pass rush, but to say he neglected the run is proof of blind bias toward him. he played the run, and yea he did often over run the play but that was due to his speed (hell, he ran a 4.4 40 yard dash for heavens sake) and aggression. he was a team player on the field, but his team mates (klecko mainly) didnt like him cause he did alot of b.s. off the field, and gobbled up all the credit from the media for his bad decisions off the field and big stats on the field. i remember gastineau playing one game (and a couple others) with a blown quad, which is not good for a speed rusher (or any d-lineman for that matter), so i guess that kills the idea of him not being a team player. if gastineau had kept his mind on football and off of chicks and other stuff, his career would have been longer, and he would be in the hall of fame. to say he was not a good football player, and say he was bad for the team and its history is a joke.

This is the best post in the thread, and I agree 100%. It cracks me up the people around here that blame Mark for the Cleveland loss. For one thing, the Jets never would have been in that game if not for Marks play during the regular season, not to mention it was really that dunce Joe Walton's fault more than anything. IMO, Mark was the best pure pass rusher there's ever been. I loved the sack dance, but I guess it's now the NO FUN LEAGUE. There would have been no Sack Exchange without him. I guess it doesn't really surprise me considering there are threads complaining about being tired of Joe Namath and the like.
Did you know that in 1981, before stats for sacks were official, the year that Gastineau got 19.5 "unofficial" sacks that the "other DE" on the Jets had 20, a half sack more? Klecko. Do you know what player crossed the picket line immediately during the 1982 strike year? The very first NFL player to do so? Gastineau. Did you know that Gastineau had one child with B Nielson? Did you know he has never met his son? Did you know he spent 11 months in jail for parole violations? Did you know he retired because he falsley claimed Nielson had uterine cancer? I wish they kept tackle stats... I could prove my point about his complete disregard for playing the run. If people want to like this guy, fine, go ahead, but it's a joke.
gastineau still had more sacks in his career, in less time, so whats your point? he did cross the picket line, so i guess this was klecko's main reason for disliking him? who cares about his personal life, whats that got to do with his football play? i watched the guy play alot, even had some vhs of the 85,86,87 seasons and one thing is certain he did not play the pass on run situations. he played like every other d-lineman on the team. dont you realize that other teams prepared for him just like they did Lawrence Taylor for the giants during the era. he was good and you hate the guy for some reason, just admit it and quit trying to say all this garbage about one of our greatest players in team history.
