Take Mariota with first pick. Trade Mo Wilkerson for another 1st and get Cooper. Move Coples back to DT and have Coples, Sheldon, Harrison as d line with Cooper, Decker, Harvin, and Kerley at WR.
I didn't list USC because, with the exception of Carson Palmer, USC hasn't really produced many good/great NFL QB's. They put up good numbers in college but always seem to fall short of expectations when they make it to the pros. My point was it doesn't matter where someone went to school, whether it be USC or UL Monroe. I do understand your point, I wasn't attempting to attack you or anything. I just don't think that because a school has produced busts at the next level that they will continue to do so for all of time. Like I said, Mariota has flaws, I do agree with you that the system in place at Oregon isn't conducive to understanding many of the pro-style offenses ran in the NFL, especially for the Jets. I also don't think that just because Mariota has ran the spread during his career at Oregon that he will not be able to learn how to run a pro style offense. This is clearly something the Jets will need to do their homework on if/when we are in a position to take Mariota.
That would be more than a balllsy move. Idzik would never consider it. I understand that the Jets have some DL line depth to work with here but you have to ask yourself: is Amari that much of a guaranteed real deal that you'd take him over Mo Wilk who's just coming into his youthful prime? That is, in the case of your proposed scenario, who's the easier pick to hit big on, a DLman or a WR? You know what you have in Mo Wilk. Are you convinced Cooper's value will top that?
No, I'm not sure about him being such a sure thing but he is pretty damn close to it. I'm thinking Mo is going to get at least a $60 million contract. The thing is, you have Sheldon who looks to be progressing to where he would be better than Mo locked up at a real cheap price for at least the next 3 years. The benefit from this is you free up cap space and (ideally) get your franchise QB and WR while not creating a need at another position as Sheldon, Snacks, and Coples would be more than serviceable in a 3-4.
Id take Cooper...... But in reality I think Harvin is going to factor into that..... If we keep harvin, as much as I hate it Mariota will defiantly get a look..... If harvin leaves cooper is the pick..,,
I liked Cooper.....But I'd stay away from Bama players in the first round. They all are severely overvalued. Many of them downright underperform or worse at the next level. Not saying Cooper will, but I see guys like him getting a top 10 draft look when he probably won't produce like one, a la every single other Bama first rounder.
Fluker is a nice tackle, Warmack should be a good guard for years. Julio Jones is damn good(I think Cooper will get compared to him, Jones is a freak of nature). Eddie Lacy went in round 2 but he's been awesome for Green Bay. Its really the defensive players from Bama that haven't gotten the job done in the NFL minus a very seldom few.
Warmack has been horrible. Fluker is a JAG. Julio is inconsistent. Lacy has had one good season, back to earth now. Their roided up RBs generally have been major NFL disappointments, and their dominant college OLs produce mediocre NFL pros. And their defensive players are all trash in the league. I would not draft Cooper over a possible franchise QB. There is nothing unbelievably special about Cooper that he deserves a top 10 draft pick. Any decent WR looks unstoppable with an elite QB. Any elite WR can't do shit with a bad QB.
Julio is awesome, he just got hampered by a real tough injury last season that derailed him(Still didn't stop him from making Cromartie look like a fool on National TV last year), I wish he was a Jet. Trent Richardson has been a fail but Lacy's in his 2nd season and came off a strong rookie campaign and while he may be having a down year, he's still projected to be around 900 yards in a pass first offense. He's one of the best backs in the NFL. Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald have had strong career without much in the QB department besides Kurt Warner. Cooper is probably not going to be either WR but he's done nothing wrong in his stint with Alabama. He's drawn a lot of praise for his route running, intelligence and well-rounded game, I would love to have him as a Jet.
Again Baker; no one is saying don't draft him. I'd love him as a Jet. I think he will be a solid NFL WR at worst. But you dn't spend a top 10 draft pick on a receiver who isn't a complete freak. Andre and Fitz were FREAKS. In addition, Cooper comes out of a program that teams have bought way too high on and didn't get what they paid for. This thread is about Mariota vs Cooper, which in my opinion is a no brainer.
You do not trade a top-5 at his position in the NFL when he's 25/26, healthy, and by all means a high character-player, unless you're getting a real king's ransom (multiple first round picks/impact players) in return.
Idk way too early to tell but I'd definitely think Winston has the edge as he has proven to be good at the one thing most QBs have the hardest time transitioning from college to the pros, and that is successfully going through his progressions. And that is based on his freshman year, which is even more impressive. With that being said its way too early to call Mariota, or Winston, but as of now that is what it comes down to. I dont think Cooper would be a good fit considering our needs and where we are as a franchise.
Idk to me it seems like all immature stuff that kids do. Except of course for the sex assault if that is true he has to worry about going to jail and not playing football, but personally I think its bullshit. Shoplifting and yelling out a joke in the union is just kid shit that he will grow out of and I think once he hits the NFL the realization of him having to straighten up will hit him and he will be fine.
Fuck the press. They don't know football that is why they spend their time building up drama. Winston is the best thing in a long time. He is a football player and winner. That is all that matters.
