Thank god! I don't want this guy anywhere near another Jets QB.

One problem with this model is that the gray area that occurs if the coach and the GM aren't on the same page. Say the coach wants to run an EP system and has coaches with experience in that system, but the GM is out there bringing in guys who are better suited for a WCO.

Or getting to a finer level, OC wants to go with a ZBS, but GM brings in guys better suited for a man blocking scheme.

GM could always say that the guys he brought in were quality, but the coaches didn't use them correctly. Coaches would counter saying that they did the best they could, but the guys the GM brought in were ill suited for the systems they wanted to employ.

This is why you bring in a GM and give him the responsibility to choose the HC, DC and OC and form the team in the way that he wants.

Woody obviously assumes Rex is a good coach. Let's assume for the sake of argument that he is a good coach.

If the GM is making bad moves, you replace him and you bring in a new GM. You have no idea how good this GM is, but you have enough faith in him to give him the job. Rather than having him get rid of this good coach and starting brand new with a new coach that may or may not be successful, why not try to find a GM with a similar mindset to the coach and work it from there?

Why dump the good coach unless you have to? Then in a year, or in a couple years, re-evaluate and see if the coach is still doing the job you think he should, and if the GM is doing a good job or not.

I understand the argument for dumping Rex. He's neglected offense, he makes some in-game management mistakes, he does some stupid things off the field, and his staff and front office around him are being gutted. But he's also won four playoff games with a quarterback who was never that good. That's hard to do. The defense has been top 10 every year since he was here. If Rex has a quarterback who can get the job done, his defense will be good enough to be a contender every season.

If Rex fails this coming year, we can always fire him then. It gives the new GM a year to evaluate everything anyway.

As for Cavanaugh, given the way the quarterbacks have played since he's been here, neither surprised nor disappointed at this.
