yeah... i'm saddled to this pony too.

seriously. while a loss to oakland would suck, losing mangold for more time would suck much much more.

Same....save him the trip out west, stay at the facility and heal up for Baltimore.

Yeah, this is how I feel as well. Let him rest and take some more time to get healthy. We may be able to get by Oakland without him. Baltimore is an entirely different animal. I'd rather him sit this week and play vs the Ravens if possible.

Toughness will likely have little to do in determining when Mangold returns to the lineup. High ankle sprains can take a ridiculously long time to heal and in the acts of run and pass blocking in particular, offensive linemen arguably place as much if not more physical stress on their ankles than any other position players in football. Recovery time can be as brief as a couple of weeks for mild sprains and 8-12 weeks or longer in more severe cases. Returning too quickly also carries a high risk of re-injuring the ankle and possibly creating a chronic condition that might only be mitigated by surgery. As a result, I think the CS will keep him on the bench until they believe he is almost fully healed.

    Mangold feeling better, doesn’t practice

Status quo for C Nick Mangold, still recovering from a high ankle sprain on his right leg. He did not practice today and Rex Ryan again indicated he doesn’t believe Mangold will play, although he still isn’t ruling him out completely for Sunday’s game at Oakland.
‘Every day, it gets better,’ said Mangold, still in a walking boot but walking without a noticeable limp. Still, he wouldn’t assess his chances of playing, except to say he couldn’t have played today, which was why he didn’t practice.
‘Today was no chance,’ Mangold said, ‘but tomorrow is a new day. He admitted he is proud that he he started every game of his NFL career since opening day as a rookie [82 regular-season games], but added the streak ‘is not more important than what’s best for the team.’
I asked him jokingly if he could play in the walking boot, and he said ‘I could put some studs in it.’
Bottom line: I still don’t see him playing Sunday, but with the progress he seems to be making, Oct. 2 at Baltimore is well within reach. Just my .02, but I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on the internet.

Looks like we might have him for the the ravens

My theory is that if Baxter does well against two OK players in Oakland, then Mangold shouldn't play against the Ravens and Patriots if the Jets think that there may be long-term ramifications. Baxter and Moore can double-team Ngata and Wilfork while Keller, Mulligan, Conner, and LDT can provide extra blocking depending on the play call. I see the Jets being able to get by on that game plan if the defense does well.

I think there's also an opportunity to take things game-by-game. If the Jets win against Oakland and Baltimore, then surely it won't be necessary to bring back Mangold against Wilfork, who is excellent but not as good as Ngata.

this sounds all good in theory, but I see Sanchez taking a beating against the Ravens without Mangold.

Lewis and Suggs will be licking their chops.

for a supposed ground n pound team C and RT have become an issue. and the pass blocking has left Mark running for his life.

The luxury of having Mangold is that you dont always have to double team the interior.

and as evident as the loss of Mangold was against the Jags, that will only increase exponentially against the Ravens.

Like I said what you suggested is the only route of action at this point. I just hope it works.

I'd prefer to have him sit vs Raiders AND Ravens... it's crucial to have him back vs Patriots and Dolphins (mostly Patriots of course).

If we rush him back and don't have him available for our div games it might bite us in the ass...

I think its pretty crucial to have him in for the Ravens. Ngata will tear up Baxter and people don't seem to realize that it is a game that could help determine our playoff spot in the future. If NE wins the division and we are fighting for a WC spot the Ravens are another team who will most likely be in the same position.

A more detailed story that shows how important he really is to the team:

It was expected. I didn't think for a second that they'd risk him this early. Hopefully he's ready to go for the Ravens game.
