I'm going to make a guess and say zero chance that this happens. We brought in several interior linemen before the season started which tells me that the Jets want to keep Vlad at RT, as the CS has said several times already.

Desperate times call for desperate Ducasse

Whether your assumption is true or not, if Mangold is out Ducasse is going to be taking some snaps at Guard this week for precautionary reasons.

Colin Baxter might be a good backup center

Although I hope against hope that Mangold is able to play, Baxter playing the center for this week's game seems likely.

And according to Pro Football Weekly, Baxter was considered 6th best center available in the draft. They called it, "Priority Free Agent." Here is what they said:

Notes: Two-way lineman who also played basketball, wrestled and competed in track and field as a California prep. Suffered a wrist injury as a senior. Redshirted in 2006. Played all 12 in ’06, starting the final 11 at left guard. In ’07, was named the Wildcats’ offensive MVP after starting all 12 games — the first four at left guard and the final eight at center. Started all 25 games played at center in 2009-10. Played four games with a torn right meniscus (originally suffered against UCLA) before having surgery in December and sitting out the Alamo Bowl. Two-time team captain.

Positives: Plays hard and has an aggressive football temperament. Works his feet to sustain. Did a solid job against a talented Iowa front. Tough and will play through pain. Scrappy, blue-collar worker. Coachable, team player. Very football savvy — makes all the line calls and is quick to sort out what he sees and react to the blitz. Versatile interior player.

Negatives: Is undersized. Average athlete. Tends to play too upright and is late to adjust to movement or connect on the move. Can play with more consistent knee bend and pop in his punch. The further he travels, the more he struggles.

Summary: A smart, hardworking, short-area blocker with enough grit and toughness to earn a job as a swing interior backup. Could overachieve his way into a lineup.

    NFL projection: Priority free agent.

He did a great job but on the goal line he was way to tall and got slammed into the ground.

I think Baxter will play well enough to win. Not dominating, but solid. They might have to simplify a little, but overall offense will be OK. At least, that's what I am hoping for.

I still say screw trading for someone, we have plenty of cap space we should just sign Andre Gerode. The way I see it Oak has a decent D at times, granted they looked like shit against the Bills.

The issue is if Mangold misses extended time then Mark is going to get killed, its just a matter of time. If that happens we might as well tank the entire season cause with G Mac on IR we have no one.

My guess is that Mangold will miss Raiders game but will be back for Ravens and Patriots games. Meantime, Baxter will gaining valuable experience and time for his position.

It's a good plan, but I suspect that Baltimore won't be keen on just letting us have him.

Mangold's loss was huge. The important thing now is that he heals properly so we dont have to worry about future injuries. I see can see him coming back for the Baltimore game because hes a monster, but I rather have him wait until the Patriots so he can perform at 100%. Until then Baxter needs to Bear Down and assimilate with the offense which I think he can do because he's a smart physical guy. The Raiders are going to be the first test to see if he has a future on this team and in the league. Give the man a chance people, dont just say hes crap when it was first game and he never ran the offense with Sanchez. Keep Sanchez safe, no turnovers, and stopping the run will be the goals against the Raiders which, if we execute well, should be a W and a good start to the season. This road trip will show what kinda of team we are and I know we have the talent to win these games, but the real question the Jets have to ask themselves is 'How bad do you want it?'

They won't waste any picks trading for one or two games. Baxtor will be fine. I didn't see Sanchez running for his life after he came in and this may finally stop Schitty from running up the middle on 3 out of 4 plays.

    let him rest

I say we bite the bullet and let mangold heal up for a couple of weeks. Coming back early will only increase the chance of making the sprain a chronic condition. Hunter has been awful and it was revealed that Sanchez has a bruised shoulder. I don't know about you guys but I don't think Mark is going to make it through the season with the line being this fucked up.

Yeah, it's not just about tolerance for pain. High ankle sprains as I understand it are a particular risk of getting worse if you come back too quick.

My guess is, whether the Jets win or lose against Oakland, the real big game on the schedule is NE. If the docs and CS think Mangold risks anything significant coming back for the Ravens, he doesn't, instead getting ready for NE. (Of course he might not be back for all three, but...)

In short, it's most important to get Mangold back for the NE game. That is the most important game to be at full strength.

I'm bettin Mangold hasn't ever missed 2 weeks of football in his life. Still,BAxster will be ok for the Oakland game, Rex & Co. will have a plan for the Ravens game, and Mangold will be back for NE. We'll be ok. Maybe we lose a game we could have won to the Ravens, maybe not. As long as he's back for NE, were good.

The expected loss time is (a few) weeks, not months, correct?

If that's the case, let him sit out until NE. If the team truly feels they need him for the Ravens game, I think Nick is tough enough.

    Agree 100%
Outside of Revis and Sanchez, Nick is the most important player on the roster and we can't afford to have him struggling with this all season.
We can beat the Raiders without him. If we lose at Baltimore so be it (as long as Baxter doesn't get Sanchez killed). We need him to take the field at full strength against Wilfork and Hanesworth. The Division game is far more important than the other two.

Looks like alot of 2 step drops and quick screens coming up.
