It's very common to rework deals in the last year of the contract, and it's beneficial for both sides. The player gets a raise and the security of added years to his contract, and the team avoids potentially losing the player at year's end, among other things. The Jets had (have?) for a very long time held the position of not reworking deals with more than one year left. Why Revis is the exception, I'm not sure. Either they've changed their stance, or they consider it a loophole that Revis' last two contract years are "buyback" years, thus making the contract debatably a one-year deal. Perhaps somebody can clarify this.
but my argument isn't from the position of the team, it is the position of the fan who asserts that a player should honor his contract. sitting out with one year or three years is the same thing -- not honoring the contract.
But now you're diving into the age-old discussion of, "well, teams cut players all the time... so why should players honor their contracts?". I see both sides of it, which is why it's such a long-running debate.
exactly and thats where both sides come into effect. NFL contracts are so different from all the other sports. They are rarely honored on both sides and player can be cut/ holdout when ever they want to. I believe Mangold deserves a new contract before seasons in so we dont risk losing him. Im discusing Mangold here, revis is being greedy not him
hence why it is ridiculous to take sides and criticize Revis, but then hypocritically applaud Mangold. fans care about the team because they have nothing to lose if a player doesn't maximize his earnings. well, players do care whether they maximize their earnings, and it doesn't reflect negatively upon them for doing so.
my only criticism about revis and mangold is that revis has three more years, mangold has one. He should be given the extension first
You are half correct- The Jets will only rework contracts for players still on their rookie deals. I believe Cotchery and Rhodes are two recent examples of this. Guys in their 2nd/3rd contract have been out of luck.
Exactly. It's really interesting to be going from agonizing about how to GET amazing players to KEEPING amazing players. Much rather be in the latter than the former.
