Why do you HAVE to go for it? Because the previous two plays were stuffed? Fourth down and two and half yards at the goal line is like 4th and a mile because you HAVE to pass to get it in and the "D" knows it. Rookie coach got a little excited and blew the call - it happens. No need to fire him over it.
Bad decision but I understand. The play call was OK but Indy just played it perfect, hats off to them there. To say that that play cost us the game is crazy. I hate that the announcers went on and on about that.
It was one of the plays that cost the Jets the game. Ted Nugent's short kickoff to 10 gave Colts excellent field position at 39. The Jets then went into their joke of a prevent defense on Colts last drive. Did they think they were up by 11 instead of 4?
I didn't agree with the call when it was made, but i'm not going to say thats the reason we lost the game...Our D's in ability to get a critical stop once again cost us. It happened against the Pats and against the Colts...dunno if its the lack of pressure up front or the DB's (miller) just not getting it but thats whats killed us in our losses more than anything
It was a terrible call. I hope Mangini has learned that you cannot go for everything. In the end, that call, I believe, lost us this game. I'm not complaining, though. I think he's a great coach, and I'm glad we have him.
Nugent cannot kick the ball off. If he continues to, it is something that will hurt us for the entire season. I wish the Jets would teach Graham how to do it.
true, huge mistake, but it's easy to say that now...just like if we didnt get that 1st down on the brad smith option, just like if we didnt get the onside kick...etc etc....
Gutty it was not, stupid and idiotic it was. one of the worst decisions you will ever see made by an NFL HC and it was a major reason we lost the game.
Going for it on 4th and 1 w/ the whole field ahead of you is one thing but going for it on 4th and G at the opponents 3 is another. There's not much room to get anything done, it's a very difficult place to score and we should have taken the 3. I screamed it at the time and I would have said so even if we got the TD. The risk is not worth the reward.
I'm glad Mangini is the coach..we have been in every game and don't tell me you didn't have this as a ass whupping four weeks ago..we need some more players and the Jet staff is doing a OUTSTANDING job with what they have..it takes a couple years to turn the roster in too what you want and need..takin chances is part of it.
W/ a halthy Chad back this team has a playoff caliber roster. all the doom and gloom was over the unknown at QB but w/ the rceivers we have and the QB we have we'l be in every game. expectaions change quickly, a month ago 2-2 would have been a good thing but we should be 3-1 and it's frustrating we are not. I'll chalk up the bonheaded decision by mangini to being a rookie HC- we just better not see a decision like that again.
Why, what are you going to do..get him fired..you are the minority around here pal. get help for that depression..Mangini will do it again..oh yeah
"Any drive than ends in a kick is a good drive" Where have I heard that before, and look where THAT mentality got us. Queue nyjunc's canned "3 out of 5" response in 5...4...3...2...1...
Well, I agree with junc on this one. I said it at the time and still believe that it was the wrong call. If I'm coaching I put points on the board in that scenario. I thought the on-side kick was brilliant, but this one I thought was a mistake. Again take the points. Not to mention the psychological message you are sending to your defense. No big deal though, he's still learning....
But here's the thing...would you be saying that if the onside kick was recovered by the Colts? Of course, you're going to say "yes", but it's really hard to say. It's always the same with every aggressive call. If it works, great. If it doesn't, the second-guessing ensues. After what we've lived through the last five years, I'd rather take a chance on a 4th & G instead of taking a knee on third down and try a FG. I also think that a lot of people were just so sick of Herm's conservativeness that they're just happy to see some aggressiveness. Good decision, bad decision, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that it wasn't Herm's. I'm sure a lot of people would agree with that. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I suspect that's what a lot of people will be thinking.
T/D'S Beat the Colts not Fg's! Manning drove down the field on us twice with ease. You play to win not to loose. Im glad we have a Hc with Guts who actually beat Manning and knows what it takes to do it. We have the strategy now let the man get the personnel in there to do it. It was a learning experience.
dierdorf is one of the best color guys in teh game so Im not sure why youre making fun of him, unless its because he disagreed with mangini which is silly.....guys quit the nonsense...in no way shape or form is that the right decision.......you kick the field goal and take the lead.....the jets had a wonderful drive and to come away empty is demoralizing.....DBJ youre right in saying that you cant just add the three at the end and say it would have been tied because who knows how the game would have gone differently, but I should would have liked to get those 3 points and see what would have happened
I honestly wouldn't change my opinion of the on-side kick if the Colts recovered, because like you I enjoy the team showing some aggressiveness. It was a good point in the game to take that shot and fortunately it worked out for us. With 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter you take the points and the lead and let the chips fall as they will. Not to mention we were at the 2 1/2 yard line, it's not like it was inches. My real problem was the three calls before that; Houston off right tackle three times in a row. During one of those plays was the time to be a little aggressive....
Exactly. Mangini would be getting ripped if the Colts recovered that and ended up with a short field. But it worked so it's brililiance. If the 4th down play worked, it's called being aggressive and putting your stamp on the team. But it failed so he gets second-guessed. I'm sorry but that play was not the difference in the game. The D had 2 chances to close it out and failed.
