This was about Mangini's sticking to the "bend but don't break" defense that the Patriots employed successfully in 2004. Rodney Harrison was the key to it and when he went down, the D really fell apart. I'd mentioned in another thread that Richard Seymour had commented that it took more than a month of lobbying by Seymour and other veterans to convince Mangini to abandon the defense of 2004 and go back to the aggressive blitz defense of 2003. Once Mangini finally agreed, it was like night and day. Hobbs reference is to his apparent dislike of the bend but don't break defense as well. I have nothing concrete but IMO this DC job was Mangini's first with any real authority and he probably overreacted a bit to the veterans possibly thinking that they were trying to push him around. This was no big condemnation of Mangini by Patriots defensive players--they just disagreed with Mangini in holding onto a failing defense too long and Hobbs is just saying that he's happy that Pees has apparently told him that the blitzing defense stays this year. I would think that Mangini has learned from this and will be quicker to react as head coach this year.
heh, i understand where hobbs is coming from, but it's always good for a laugh when a guy opens his mouth like that (even if he wasn't flat out trashing someone)....and when it's a player like hobbs, it's more along the lines, when you get some real talent, then you can open your mouth a little bit
Well - As long time posters here and on other Jet boards on the internet, some of us know that there will ALWAYS be a person or group who plays the Darksider role - It's a fun role and over the years the names change.... We just went through a natural period where the Darksider arguments become more and more legit until a new regime comes in, upon which, logical Old Timers, back up a bit and give the new regime room to breath and take more of a wait and see approach Knowing that it takes time to build a Championship Team and just like we did for Bradway / Herm, we give the new guys the benfit of the doubt where we can..... Seems like we have our 1st few candidates for the Contrarian poster who wants to be heard and who wants to be the voice of the Darksiders - Sounds good to me, as I get older, there's always an influx of kids coming to the team with passion and excitement as well as a ton of irrational judgement.... It's all good though...... Either Mangini succeeds and these people disapear OR, Mangini doesn't and this guy is here with his hands out hoping to get all the credit... We've see it all before - But, enjoy playing the role. Old timers know it takes TIME.... Irrational posters will stand on their heads and scream next year if the team doesn' go 10-6 claiming "SEEEEE - We stink"..... It's a LONG process boys.. come back to me in 3 years if we're not competing.. But, I'll be happy with 1-15 next year as long as I see the right development and building of a team.
They said that prior to the season, based on his secondary schemes as an assistant. I think he got a little overwhelmed when the injuries just kept occurring.
The funny thing is, Bob (aka 'Boob') Jensen was possibly the biggest Jets homer in history (only recently surpassed by the infamous ray ray ) when Parcells was here. He was much more obnoxious then...or was it because the jets owned the Pats then?
a defensive coordinator named Dean Pees and not one joke! Wow, you guys have matured since high school!! This guy must have been slammed growing up!
Guys, raj has an abnormal love for Herm Edwards, so he is bitter. If the Jets had a staff of BB, BP, and Holmgren he would still think Hermie was better...
I always like when players knock former coaches and say things are "so much better". Here are some examples. Detroit Pistons love the new freedom they have since Larry Brown left. NYJ's players rave about their easy camps. "We should be much stronger at the end of the year because of this" says Kevin Mawae...one of the 12 offensive lineman that went down with a muscle tear. Stephon Marbury blames the coaches for the same thing that the Pats like. Stephon "never saw a playoff game on TV I didnt like" Marbury says that their new coach isnt aggressive enough. They dont allow him to be Starbury. One thing we have all learned about players and former coaches is that they all know better...and they are almost always wrong. rajensen088 hall of fame coach is already getting raves by his new players in KC for running an easy minicamp. The players say the same exact thing that came out of Mawaes mouth. If I had a dime for every player that will be on KC's IR this year, I would consider retirement.
A ton? Yes. It also followed the camp that Herm decided the Jets would be better off to get out of the gate fast....and ran a tougher than usual camp the year before. It produced a fast start. Herm decided to run a woodstock camp the following year..and all the injuries followed. Camps in the past under Herm also produced players that were out of shape mentally and physically. The point is that show me a player that defends a coach that didnt win...and I will show you a players coach that kissed their ass. Herm kissed a lot of ass in 5 years.
The Patriots finished 28th in fewest defensive penalties. You aren't the 28th most penalized defensive unit if you are playing a Paul Hackett conservative game plan. Penalties are caused by poor coaching. And since when does Mangini get a pass for reducing the Romeo Crennel 8th ranked defense in 2004 to a Mangini coached 26th ranked defense in 2005 based on an 'injury' excuse. Certainly few Jet fans would give Herm Edwards the benefit of the 'injury' excuse.
Raj is a tool. Hes Herms tool and he grazes the internet looking for anti Mangini stuff and pro herm stuff. I have no idea what kind of coach Mangini will be...none. All I know is that after the last 5 years of church sermon press conferences, I just want some peace and quiet...and coaching. If I never heard Mangini give a press conf. this year...that would fine with me...I could use the year off from the nonsense that has been spewed the past half decade.
Want to know why he gets a pass? Do you really want to know why? Heres why..and try to get this through the thick skull that sits on top of that kool aid frame. Hes not Herm Edwards....hows that for honesty. Hes just not Herm Edwards. Not good enough...ok...try this then. HES NOT HERM EDWARDS. Thats the best I can do...thats the best many of us can do. Thats all we ever wanted....we just wanted a coach that would shut THE f$#$%% up. Is that asking a lot? We want our coach to coach...and we want him to shut the f#$% up and coach. Maybe one day it will sink in how hated he was. Maybe one day you will understand that many of us think he had no...0 football knowledge. I, not speaking for the masses here, thought that he even didnt know the playbook on offense. Im totally convinced that he could never just grab the microphone and yell in a play of his own. I believe that during his 5 years with the Jets...he called one play...just one on either side of the ball. He couldnt get his OC to open up his gameplan...he almost started a fight on the sidelines because he wanted Jordan to get more carries..and he lost both of those battles. Taking a knee in Pitt. was the only play he ever called. During his 5 years here, I never heard a player say one time "Yeah...Herm wanted that play...Herm called that one..he was emphatic about that". He was a glorified cheerleader..and always will be...and when he gets fired from KC, he will probably become the first HC that not one team would ever consider hiring as a DC....WHY? Because he couldnt do it..never did it..and never will be able to do it. So keep trying to convince some around here that we lost a genius.
What were the penalties? How many for offsides? How many for pass interference with the new rules? How many for facemasking? The type of penalty holds plenty of weight in this discussion. If the penalties were for being over-agressive then so be it. If they were for being out of position then its something that should be taken seriously.
Well since people were able to throw the ball all over the Pats last year...they gave up a lot of deep passes to many injuries in the secondary...you would NOT want to leave those corners on an island. (See Broncos game)
