i'm wondering how many of Farve's picks were on 3 and short, when they should of run the ball anyway, hes forced to throw in that situation no matter what. terrible play calling. it was time for him to go all the reason you need is the Seattle game
Seriously, should we have retained Mangini in a lesser role like a defensive coordinator position? That would be the end of Bob Sutton!
NO HOLMGREN!!! NO FAVRE!!!!!!! If not Cower, then maybe Shottenheimer? We are not going with another unproven coach, especially with PSL's to sell. Marty has been successful, he knows how to coach players, and develope them, something Mangini and staff, didn't. Out of all the retreads out there, i say Shotty or Cower
Marty would keep his baby boy on as the OC probably so I don't know if I'm too willing to accept that hiring. Some can even say that Mangini was holding Brian back, but are we really willing to see if that's the case if his father keeps him on board?
After the success of Mike Smith, Jon Harbaugh, and Tony Sparano, going with a "proven" coach isn't necessarily the way to go. The key is having someone on staff that can spot a good coach regardless of their experience. I don't think the Jets have that person.
I'm shocked at how quickly it went down, and while I used to be a fan of Mangini, I'm glad to see blood, and I was souring on him.
I think Woody made another mistake by firing Mangini. If you think about it objectively, after inheriting piece of garbage team as a rookie a rookie coach, Mangini did a pretty decent job. In three years he lead this team to two winning seasons, 1 play-off appearance, and two Ws against mighty NE rival. This is really not bad for someone who was really learning on the job. Now that Mangini has three years, two winning seasons, a play-off appearance under his belt, I think he is primed to improve as a coach. Not to be forgotten all the winning he did in NE as assistant. And he did have 5 game turnaround this year. He really has a good resume, and now finally enough experience also. He is just at the start of his coaching career, and it was just a dumb move to give him training and then boot him. Woody will regret this mistake. If he wants someone to blame, how about blaming himself for releasing #2 overall rater QB this year to a division rival. Mangini is not at fault for that. Nor is he at fault for Favre throwing so many picks this year. Look at last game. He had open receivers, but he threw into coverage. He was careless. Chad on the other hand took what defense gave him, never made a mistake. Think about this, on much worse Jet team, Chad never had a QB rating as bad as Favre had this year. Never had a season where he didn't throw more TDs than picks, even in a 4 win team last year without any star players to help him, unlike 6 Brett had this year. It is clear that we made a disastrous mistake at QB position, and that cost us the season. How can you blame Mangini for that? It's not Mangini who cost us the season, its you, Woody. Too bad now we do not have a good QB because of you, nor a good coach. Darn!!!
Ballsy - but I doubt that would happen. Woody seems enamored with Tannenbaum and if you bring in Jimmy Johnson he will want total control - the head coach and general manager roles. So, Tannenbaum will not be whispering Jimmy's name in Woody's ear - because that essentially means he would be out of a job and (at best) relegated to a "salary cap" guru position again. Plus, Woody, although he was at the press conference today - strikes me as someone that would defer to his "football people" (i.e. Tannenbaum) with respect to the next HC decision.
It sorta hurts because I once thought Mangini would finally be that coaching "rock" we haven't had in a while, but yeah, I agree this is the right way to go. The organization desperately needs a fresh face to get this bitter feeling out everybody's system.
And we need someone who is connected to neither the Jets nor the Patriots at this point. We need to get away from trying to copy them at every turn and start our own legacy. Maybe we can get the Ryan brothers here, one as head coach and the other as DC. We'd have that Baltimore-style 3-4 defense and would just need a good OC to go with them
That pretty much summarizes my feelings. It seems pretty clear that he has regressed as a coach, but I think coaches (especially head coaches) get way more credit than they deserve when they happen to have good players who execute. There are loads of players in the locker room who share plenty of blame for this debacle. I also agree with your later post concerning Favre - they should give him until the Super Bowl to retire, and if he doesn't they should cut him.
I'm not shocked. I couldn't sleep last night so I just sat up listening to sport radio waiting for the axe to drop.
