I was not having another discussion with you. i was responding to an assertion made by someone else that his numbers are better this year. Some key numbers are worse, or are only marginally better because all Qb's are doing better, most likely due to the new rules helping receivers. He still is THE WORST starting Qb, not merely below average. What I said is not a matter of debate. One must acknowledge it is a fact that a key metric like ypa has gone down. Given the still too high turnover rate, a low ypa is very problematic. Since the object of the passing game is to move the ball down the field and to score, a low ypa undercuts that effort, requiring more plays to move the ball, risking a greater percentage of turnovers. Of course the lower ypa ironically is a net result of using conservative play calls in order to avoid turnovers, and Smith only had one interception yesterday. But his net yardage for 43 attempts is just plain not getting it done.
A very good, solid, methodical post on what is wrong from a talent standpoint. As much as I hate to read it, I have to agree with every word.
if you can't at least win 1 of any of those last 5 games, you are no where near a superbowl in the future. especially if we were able to keep those games closem thats when you will your way into victories and that has not been the case for the offense and the defense this year. we were much more "clutch" last year for some reason, and watching jets football has just been unmotivational, predictable and dull these last couple games we had our chances. last year it worked out. this year it didn't and this is the result
I'll sound like a broken record cause I've said this before..but..prior to Idzik's arrival everyone wanted the jets to A. build through the draft B. fix the cap situation. That's exactly what Idzik's done. I don't even really understand the outrage regarding the Idzik's drafts. There is a large number of young developing talent from both those drafts still on the roster. Richardson & Amaro look like sure bet impact players while Milliner & Pryor both have a shot. If you're GM is drafting 1-2 impact players a draft to go along w/ a couple other starters/role players you are doing quite well. A full draft of impact players is completely unrealistic. Some of the best drafts of ALL TIME had at most 3-4 high impact players. This idea that we were gonna be saved by draft picks & catapulted to stardom in year's 1 & 2 couldn't be more silly & outlandish. I know this fan base is impatient but geez...impatient is quickly turning into incompetent. As someone else already pointedout Rome wasn't built in a day. Just remember..this method of building the team is what you ALL wanted. Dance w/ the girl you came w/ Jets fans.
I agree for the most part, but Idzik had made some moves that deserve criticism. Cutting 4th rounders this early in their career is a bit of a problem IMO. Secondary I dont totally blame on him. Invested 3 high picks in the last 2 years on the secondary. In hindsight, Cromartie would have been a better option than Patterson. But everyone here hated Cromartie last year, so revisionist history takes over. Patterson, when healthy, is a great choice for a stop gap player. Obviously no one knew he was going to go AWOL. I suppose a bit more depth would have been nice. I think everyone's big issue is that the Geno pick was just a bad pick. I've argued he's improved a bit from last year, but missing on a QB, will always put heat on the GM. Missing on Geno could come back to bite him. But I agree big time on the building through the draft thing. 99% of the Jets fans on here wanted a more draft oriented team building method. That is exactly what Idzik did and everyone hates him for it. The issue with building through the draft (from the fans perspective) is it will take time for drafted players to come into their own. It requires a degree of patience to tolerate a total rebuild via the draft, and its clear there are many fans who are lacking in that department. The people complaining about FA spending is a bit annoying. No FA they could have spent are making the Jets a contendor this year. Once the Jets have built the roster the way they want, they will supliment the team with free agents. The cap space needs to be spent, its not like he's hoarding it for no reason. It sucks that the Jets are 1-5, but I'm very happy that Idzik is sticking to his plan, rather than crumbling under the media and impatient fans.
to rebuild through the draft you must draft players that make the team. That part is essential to the plan. This guy has cut 4 picks from this yrs draft......... That is the part you are missing sure don't spend money but get players in the draft that help. If you can not do that get a player in free agency to help nope they did not do that either one player with 21 million in cap resource is a fing crime. they should have made another run at another receiver. Nothing you guys can say can excuse idzick from the performance he has done this yr. Poor drafting not getting enough help for a young qb that needs it... he basically through this yr away at the expense of the fans and then the coach. Again what is the excuse for next yr, new system, new coach, new qb.... we wll needed to save some money... nobody was worth it that could help. Fing bullshit what are you guys blind? I am not saying you fix everything at once. You cant but you get two receivers this yr in free agency that help Geno now. Fix cb and oline next yr, but guess what he didn't because he cant draft and now we have receiver, oline, and cb next yr and the team regresses. But hey this is not about now it is about winning for the next ten yrs once everything is fixed. At this rate nothing will be fixed for the next 3 yrs.
then you draft correctly and don't cut 4th round draft picks. or 3 others from this draft. My issue this this gm has not accumulated nfl talent despite have 20 draft picks and 2 free agency periods. All he has to show for it are 4 nfl caliber players. 4 if you count Milner the rest are question marks. He has left wholes on this team he actually tried to fill poorly at best. So at best this team has the same needs it went into this yr with. that is not progress at best everyone getting a yr older is status quo more likely though it is called regression.
Find me an example of a GM/team that drafted 12 players that A. All made the team B. Didn't go 3-13 or worse Building through the draft is a slow methodical process. You simply are not gonna hit on every pick. Additionally some guys are gonna take some time to develop be it stashed away on the depth chart or via the practice squad. If you're depending THAT much on 1st/2nd year players to be our savior..you're gonna be disappointed every single time. This is about building a deep, COMPLETE roster. Something this team hould havestrived for a long time ago.It takes time. There will be mistakes along the way.If you don't have the patience for it..you should do yourself & everyone else a favor & find a new team You just want a reason to be angry, impatient & to have a scapegoat. There's nothing I'm gonna say that will change that. But the expectations for these draft classes are just BEYOND silly.
This is what I was talking about when it comes to impatience. If you want to build through the draft, you'll have to deal with a slow wait. It's easy for everyone to say they want a draft built team, but then when it comes time to accept that, they cant. The Jets had 12 picks, and tried to trade up, but there were no good deals available (according to sources lol). They cut 4 out of 12, which means that the Jets still have 8 rookies on the team. Our 1st and 2nd rounder both contribute. Pryor is struggling now, but I imagine he'll end up being an above average player. Amaro has a real future. McDougle and Evans are hurt. Dozier hasnt cracked the lineup yet, which isnt uncommon for a late fourth round pick. The cutting of Saunders hurt, I'll give you that, and I'm sure if Idzik could take it back, he would. Reilly contributes a bit, which is all you can ask of a 7th rounder. IK isnt ready to play yet either, but he's a 6th rounder. He shouldnt be playing right now. I just dont understand what you were expecting. 7 of the 12 picks we made to be everyday contributors? That isnt realistic in the slightest. Our first two picks from this year are contributing and the third and fourth got injured. Most rookies taken after the 4th dont contribute much anyway. Dozier and IK clearly arent ready to play yet. But there's a reason they arent on the PS, the team has plans for them, and dont want them snatched. Im not saying Idzik is flawless, there is no telling how these drafts turn out. Not yet at least. He could have bombed or it could have been great. Your post is incredibly short sighted, though.
I agree with most of this . . . Overall, these are two very good, thoughtful, and enlightening posts. The one big issue I have with Idzik is from his second draft: I just don't understand why he didn't draft a WR earlier than he did. To me, it was the biggest single need on the team and I wanted it addressed early (and often). He signed Decker, who is a solid possession receiver, but this team is still in desperate need of a legitimate deep threat (This is arguably one of the biggest issues this offense has).
Look I understand why you believe people are being impatient but we have to be realistic here... We had/have one of the worst rosters in the nfl coupled with 12 draft picks. If we are only going to have a 1/12 hit rate, what happens when we only have 7 picks? If we only produce 1 to 2 good players per draft, we will easily lose more starters than that per year via old age and or free agency. Next year we go into the draft with same needs as next year, while our o line and linebackers get older. We will be constantly rebuilding and we need a GM that can hit in mid-late rounds as well as undrafted free agency. Willie Campbell was hidden on the roster last year. We cut him and he barely makes a practice squad. When do you start to question how we are evaluating talent vs the rest of the league? What about the fact that guys we passed on at WR like Powell are on the roster over Saunders? Do you really have confidence in Idzik executing the next draft?
I don't see how you limit "impact" players to only 2 based on that list. Maybe you mean potential superstars, but there certainly have been more than just two impact players. And, based on your interpretation, I wonder how many teams have more than two impact players. For example, in just perusing Giants draft from 2008-2013, once you get past JPP & Hakim Nicks, where are their "impact" players? And, I'd go even further to say that I'd rather have Wilkerson & Richardson than JPP & Nicks
Really, no you do not need to wait 2 yrs to see the guy is moron and blew this draft. 4 cut players from this draft. You do realize that they need help everywhere and this gm blew 4 important picks. I would be impatient if I wanted those players to start this yr heck maybe even suit up. But they were CUT. He had resources to help correct the wide receive issue by bringing another player with decker but he sat on his hands. So we have 21 million dollars a qb that is struggling and we are running salas and nelson out there weekly as if they are nfl caliber 2 or 3rd receivers. You could have had a receiver free agent in their 20s for the next 4 productive yrs but idzick let them pass. You may be happy with their plan of wasting yrs of players lives and fans money but that us excusable. if you or I did my job like idzick we would be fired and rightfully so, You are by very definition a homer. Willing to let he staff get a flyer for not taking care of needs when they had resources. You can't fix everything I understand that but asking for a team to draft correctly asking them to get help for a young qb is not asking for too much is it? No matter what people say they never can argue 4 basic facts. That in 2 yrs idzick has delivered 4 nfl players and everyone else he has brought in is a question mark. You can not build a team that way.
